Let's Talk About The Offense: Where are the TDs?

111 posts in this topic

was about to say this. It wouldn't necessarily be better overall with boldin, but in the redzone, boldin just got open, and when he wasn't open, he caught contested passes. We also have missed Pitta.

Over receivers just don't get open, period, on any down from any where on the field. The only one that has shown a bit of savvy to get open without just pure speed has been marlon brown.

He didn't get open so much as he just played the ball so much better than the DBs

He also seemed to always be on the same page with Joe in terms of checks and hot reads. I can't say the same thing for the guys we have this year.

Boldin had tremendous Football IQ.  He was a real pro's pro.  I always think the most important thing in developing is pass catchers, since they tend to be coveted more in FA and you really want that synergy.

That's because he was a former QB.

Penalties is our biggest problem. However I must say that the offense on Monday night was at least moving the ball and taking some time off the clock. There was little points but at least no 3 and outs.

Missing Pitta has hurt...he has been great interest RZ. As for the long plays, its part bad luck part and part execution on both the QB and WRs.

I don't really think missing Boldin has hurt that much here. He was never a great RZ target for us.

Except for in the playoffs when all his TD's were in the RZ.

sidenote: I think it is really interesting to see how many people are NOW saying we need a running game, when earlier in the season, many people wanted Joe to just "open it up" with the sugar huddle and the 3-4 and even 5 wide receiver sets.  Boy....have things changed!  lol!  While I am definitely for the Ravens utilizing Joe's cannon of an arm to throw the ball; I am a huge advocate of "smash mouthed," "dash and smash," and the "ground and pound" style of offense!

I may be the only here; but I truly miss the days of us having a "3-headed" monster in the backfield that we could count on.  Because we can't run the ball now; teams have made the Ravens one dimensional with the passing attack.  And to me that is the easiest thing to key in on and take away!  We need some "bruisers" in the backfield that love to run in between the tackles and that love contact and that love to lay a lick on LBs as their are coming through the hole.  We don't have that!  Our running game is too soft at the moment and opposing teams know it!

I'm a fan of what works.  If Rice was still playing at a Pro Bowl level, Pierce showed improvement from his rookie season, and the line was getting crazy push, then I would certainly be a fan of running the rock as much as possible.  However, that's not the case.  Unfortunately, we don't have a great group of receivers that would excel in a run and shoot spread offense, either.  I do think we are better this season when favoring the latter, however.  As callahan stated above, we score every 3.67 passes in close, which isn't the greatest of all time, but it's better than 1 score out of 37 runs.  Smash mouth has worked for us in the past, but trying to be smash mouth this season has gotten us in trouble and behind early in games.  Maybe we should come out slinging it around, and then we can switch to a run-first offense later in games if we don't have to play catch up and the defense has softened up.

we need the run game to step up that starts and ends with the offensive line, they need to play better

We have a pass pro offensive line.  We only have one lineman that can get off the ball and that's Yanda.  Everyone else can only stand people up, at best.

That is true, all but 1 i think, but during his 3 years here he wasn't much of a threat in the RZ.

Jamal, Priest and Leach.  Now that would be a three headed monster!

Who could have ever thought that a team with RR, Pierce and Leach would be the worst, ever.

Not to mention a pro bowl guard, a pro bowl caliber LT, and a previously successful offensive line coach/run game coordinator.

There's just not logic behind our struggle, lol. It doesn't make sense!

I had high hopes for Rice, Pierce and Leach being that for us this season.  It hasn't happened so far. :th_shame:

I agree with this and yet, I am also a fan of a team's scheme that fits the skill sets of their personnel.

Yeah.  RR has been super durable up until this year.  However it seems that Pierce has been nicked in some way since Day 1.

I miss Jamal.........

I watched this kid play in HS. He dominated whenever on the field. He has the potential to help in the RZ and I hope he gets a look.

When we get to the redzone we need to start doing "Young" tosses. We're so predictable it's sickening. We gotta mix it up a bit. But side question... why do we suck so bad at running screens? Like, RB, WR or TE screens? We are straight trashcan when it comes to that. I don't get it, haha.

one thing WE DO MISS about boldin was that he was a great blocker and would cut in and knock off a linebacker or SS

Look, do you want TD's, or Harbaugh. Ain't getting both.

"We gotta be aggressive."

Bring back the Wildcat, that will show them.

There have been problems, but there was some light at the end of the tunnel in the last game.

That was a heckuva Defensive Line and for the most part our guys did a good job against it.

Ray Rice got a few yards, though they were padded by the late long run he intentionally augered in on.  I still don't understand that one. Points are a late tie breaker and we have a slim net points total. He should have scored.

I'm hopeful the Oline and running game will look even better at home vs the Pats.  Rice has been a little jumpy. Too many cutbacks. I'd like to see him take the hole straight on and once through the line he can cut if he wants.

We need 24 points vs the Pats.  That's three touchdowns.  We haven't been that productive all year.
