Joe Flacco's Knee

227 posts in this topic

I still think they should have done a precautionary MRI on his knee just to be sure.  Flacco seems like the type of player to tough something out and downplay the seriousness of it.  Kudos to him for being a boss that way, and that's certainly a good trait in a football player, but I'd tend to be a bit more cautious with my $120 million dollar investment.

i hope he's ok with no swelling.  That alone can start affecting the knee and its normal operation.  He did look off after the hit, hard time stepping up into the throw except the last crucial one he did.

Need to hear that he's out with the team in practice with no issues.  I think the normal response after game time was to downplay it.  How did it respond today?

While I completely agree there would be no harm in a precautionary MRI, I cant imagine "The powers that be" letting him go with out with out the complete and full consent of the medical staff

Based on watching the hit and word that he is ok, he likely just strained his MCL or has a minor sprain -- neither of which are major.  He is very lucky to have not torn it or sprained it badly.

La Canfora just gave us some nice updates on Twitter.

"Joe Flacco will be limited next few days, may rest a day or two while he is fitted for a knee brace but has every intention of playing Sun"

"Flacco was hit low late in Baltimore's win at Detroit but every indication so far is it is a manageable injury short and long term"

Sounds like good news.

Sounds like the initial reports on RG3.  They actually denied his injury for 3 games.

NOT saying that's what is happening, just thinking it sounds familiar...  GOSH, I hope that Flacco is good...  Saying lots of prayers.  That would not be a good thing right now.

I really hope our organization is not as incompetent as the Redskins in this area.

But now you have me worried again.

All I remember was putting my face in my hands and thinking 'dear god please let him be okay', next thing I knew the sideline reporter said he was jawing with fans and that put me at ease. He is really bar none the most durable QB in the league.

I'm glad he doesn't come out and call Detroit for having "The worst fans in the league" for taunting him after his injury unlike some other purple superstars I could mention.
flacco doesn't need MRI on knee http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10152342/joe-flacco-baltimore-ravens-not-undergo-mri-knee
So why are they fitting him with a knee brace ? I'm getting a little nervous . I knew someone with the Lions was gonna cheap shot Joe !

Granted RG-III's leg wrapped sideways around Nagata.
Joes leg didn't quite do that.

rg3's injury looked a whole lot worse from the get-go. the hit, the obvious pain he was in, the trouble putting any weight on it, of course joe is alot tougher, but i would just say with a fair amount of certainty that this injury report is alot more likely to be legit than rg3's

No, but the way it buckled was wicked nasty.  I thought he tore his ACL, that was not a pretty looking hit.

The knee brace news is all over Twitter, I believe La Canfora and Aaron Wilson both reported it.

This is starting to sound scary. If a knee brace is needed then maybe the injury is more severe than we thought.

They're fitting him with a knee brace because at the very least he just sprained his knee.

There's no chance they'd let him walk out there without at least a brace on.

the knee brace shouldnt worry anyone. im not saying dont be worried because knee injuries are always bad, but the brace isnt the worrisome part. even if his knee felt 110% the very next morning he would probably still play with a brace, at the very least its a safety measure.

My two cents for what they're worth--From my experience, my own, my friends, and my wife...ugh goes with the sports territory I suppose as many of you know, anyway...cartilage damage causes acute pain, especially to the touch, ligament issues cause pain plus instability. Usually any kind of damage to the MCL or PCL causes people to miss some playing time, while as we all know ACL damage is usually more serious.

I would think that if the team suspected any of the above (structural damage) an MRI would be mandatory. Only thing that worries me is if Joe is not being forthcoming about any cartilage issues, trying to gut it out as he has said he really has little experience with such things. I am hoping the brace is not only precautionary, but something that gives him confidence to move around. Also, while his knee was bent at a wicked angle, besides causing significant soreness, perhaps the hit of the face mask to the area caused numbness and pain that caused much panic to all involved.

Goodness gracious, no time to lose our franchise QB. Heal Joe Cool. Heal.

Flacco isn't a whiny prima donna like Brady, Manning and Roethlisberger which is why he never gets the roughing the passer calls... it's absurd.

I'm sure the brace will be utterly precautionary. There is no way Joe has not been interviewed every which way by team medical staff about every last knee issue that exists. If there was knee trouble above level of soreness, he would not play. Period. We would never risk the health of Joe, he's too important. In essence, no way we would "RG3" this if it was the case. Considering he got up and played the next play, albeit gingerly, just makes it seem as if it wasn't anything threatening.

Like someone said above, even if Joe felt absolutely amazing, no way they would give up their attempts to brace him.

I've got to tell you my knee hurts in sympathy, I can't even watch the replay on the hit!

I really hope that the knee is stable and does not limit his ability to move in the pocket.

I hope we make some adjustments to improve protection, Leach, keep tight end in, what ever!!

Protect Joe at all cost!!!

First thought is that it's manly precautionary, especially if they think it's a low grade knee sprain - relatively minor injury or not, it's still an injury and it won't feel good to put weight on it, plus any kind of sprain and you will lose some stability, because you've stretched the ligament.  It's not like he's the most mobile guy out there anyway, so the brace shouldn't affect his play much.

The type of brace he'll supposedly be wearing is one that limits that "ACL tear-like" movement.  It simply adds stability.  Whatever his injury, and no matter how minor, they're going to take the precautions to make sure whatever is wrong doesn't get worse.  If they didn't schedule him for an MRI, then I doubt there's anything structural wrong.  As you said, the brace won't affect his play at all.  It's just an added precaution for a $120M dollar QB.
