Re-signing TE Dennis Pitta

335 posts in this topic

Joe is so much better with Dennis out there. Somehow we have to find the money  to pay the man, or " The Hoodie" will!

I like Dennis Pitta a lot.  He's a quality guy that comes in and gets his work done.  He has good chemistry with Joe and he does a lot of nice things on the field.  But he's not a (healthy) Gronk or Graham type of player, not even close.  He's an old school receiving TE.  He's a (not much) younger version of Dallas Clark.  He's still prone to dropping a few balls he shouldn't drop, and we saw that again today.  He simply can't be given that $7 million type of contract some people are suggesting.  He's not worth it.

I think he'll get a fair deal somewhere between $4-5M annually with us.  He's a solid player, but not a superstar.  He may even take a chance on a one year deal hoping to reboost his value.

I'm completely fine with that, that's a fair deal.  But he's not the insanely athletic matchup nightmare the truly elite TEs are.  Our fans get so swept up in the players that they have unrealistic views of them sometimes.

I agree.  Even is he does hit the open market, I don't see any team offering him more than $4-5M.  His value/play aren't that of the Gronks and the likes of the world, and I sincerely doubt anyone would even offer him that, cap space or not.  He's a solid player for us, and one that I think we should bring back, but I don't think he's a crucial "we need him or we don't win" type of player.

I agree. I really don't think he should get more than $5M and I would probably let him walk if he was seeking a 6-7M deal.

Whether or not Pitta is worth 6-7M isn't the question, its the market value. Same reason we paid Flacco 20m a year. It was the going rate.

He has proven to be a guy who can catch 60-70 passes a year and be a good RZ threat. If we don't pay Pitta, he will walk and get paid somewhere else.

Due to the injury causing him to miss most of the season, I'm hoping that the FO & Pitta can come to perhaps some 2 yr deal at a lower price.

If not, pay the man. We need him on this offense.

personally, I'm not sure we need to pay 2 high priced pass rushers who have not really done much (other than penalties on Dumervil) the last few weeks.

That's market value of a guy that Pitta isn't.  Surely you don't believe he's the match up nightmare the athletic TEs are?  He lacks the tremendous size or speed that set guys like Gronk, Graham, and Davis apart from the pack.  Heck even the kid from Cleveland presents more matchup problems than Pitta.  He's simply not a $6-7 million a year guy, we have to be smarter about how we spend our money.

Look at the cost of TEs on the open market. I never said he is Gronk or Graham, but these guys make (or are going to make) much more than 6M.

Pitta is in line with the Jared Cook, Zach Miller types who both make 6-7M.

4-5M just isn't going to cut it. You don't have to believe it, but you heard it here first.

I have said it before I will say it again. LET HIM WALK. He looked horrible today and this draft class is stacked with quality TE. Take the UNC kid in the 1st round and upgrade the position. Pitta and Torrey are good weapons. They aren't great and this offense and Joe need a few great weapons. I would rather let them walk than overpay and clog up the valuable cap space. I think we will find a lot of answers in the draft for these weapons.

Whether that's the rate or not is difficult to say. I will say that if he wants or can get that much elsewhere and won't take 4-5M I'd let him go elsewhere before I'd want us to pay him that much.

LOL at people saying to let him walk because he had a rough game.

Unless you were asleep or under a rock for three or so months, you have to be daft to think he'd be back to 100% speed after that hip injury.

I think 6M and change would be the number for me. 4-5M isn't a legitimate offer. John Carlson makes 5M a year.

If he wants more I would resign Dickson and draft a blocking TE.

Yeah I know your point and there's a good case to be made that he's worth more to us than elsewhere so I see your point. I'm just not sure we can afford to hand out all these contracts with guys like Jimmy and Torrey Smith, Arthur Jones, etc. coming due as well.

It's not like those contracts worked out well for their respective teams.

Who said that? I want to virtually slap them.

Flacco needs to take a serious pay cut and resign Dennis Pitta, Daryl Smith, Art Jones.

In that order.

You make me cringe..... He won't take one until 2016 when his cap hit is 28 million. Until then it's no greater than 14 and some change.

Getting back to topic, there's no doubt in my mind Pitta gets resigned. Hopefully we lock him up in the offseason.

Ravens need to draft TE 1st round, WR 2nd round this spring. The Flacco-Pitta relationship is a detriment to the team. It only works if they both excel and the only way for Pitta to excel is for Joe to target/favor him & other teams know this. Also, with the Smith brothers (Jimmy/Torrey) due new contracts next year we need to draft some skill players this year cuz I can see us strapped to meet their demands.

I would switch those two.  We have good enough position this year to get one of the top receivers in the draft.  It would be a waste to go TE that high when some of the best tight ends aren't usually the first ones off the board.

As much as I would like a TE.  I would go WR in the 1st and RT/C in the 2nd.  We can hold off till the 3rd for a TE

I don't see Pitta going anywhere else. Let him test free agency, then sign him. I don't think other teams will take the chance on him. It is not like he is this elite tight end option. He just has great chemistry with Joe because they shave weird maustaches together and go on man dates. I think we can get him on the cheap side if we let him go and see what is out there and match any deal he gets.

I think the one team I see going after Pitta would be the Patriots. With the Gronk situation of him always being injured, and not having Hernandez anymore, I could see them making a push to try to sign him.

I think the Patriots would be after him but they have already dealt with one Tight End with a bad injury, they would be concerned about his hip. But they would like the fact that he didn't murder someone executioner style, so there is always that.

Pitta's injury this summer will definitely help us in contract negotiations.  I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to sign a one or two year deal so he can break out, then cash in in the near future.
