2014 Salary Cap Update

153 posts in this topic

With the 9 mil currently available in cap, a lot of the guys still potentially on the ravens "wish list" may still be in play. Given the list:

If any of these guys make it to FA post draft, Ravens could pursue them more aggressively due to the fact they will more than likely come in at a more "bargin rate". The ravens are kinda sitting pretty since they took care of a lot of the "need" position early with Monroe, Pitta, and MLB Smith. Now the Ravens can choose to let the market set the rate for whos left over and go from there or make their selections in the draft, then go back to FA and fill in any holes. This could be a big leap forward for the ravens offense in 2014, Flacco will have a ton of new weapons and some expected improvement over some weapons he has already had. To know you could have smith, lee/odell/cooks, pitta, and torrey on the field at the same time would definately open some running lanes for Rice.

I want Jimmy extended now, his price tag could be huge if we wait another year! I think he is the emerging leader of this D going forward for the Ravens!

Jimmy had a great year last year, no doubt. But there is no guarantee he ever will again. Financially it makes sense to lock players up early. I did it all the time in Madden. But in real life, players do not always follow this trend. We have seen around the league plenty of players getting big deals after one great year, only to flop. If Jimmy has 2 great years in a row, it will give the FO more confidence that he'll be a stud long term. Technically we have a greater chance of losing him next off season but that's the nature of the business.

Great chance of losing him is well said. Other than giving that contract to Webb a few years ago, we haven't thrown contracts towards CB's in forever it seems like. Cary Williams is a good example, had a decent year, contract was up and wanted money, and didn't get it.

And he didn't do that much

And he didn't really look all that good for the Eagles, so maybe we dodged a bullet. That is not even taking into account his lack of professionalism.

The Ravens still have room under the cap. What positions do you think the Ravens should address in the draft, and which ones should they address in FA? Technically, the Ravens have 11.3 million left in cap space (D. Smith, Zuttah, a couple EFAs, and draft cap numbers are not included).

Actually, Hensley and ESPN are wrong.  Aaron Wilson is/was right.

It's $6,976,187 to be exact, for those who are picky.  ;)

I'll take Wilson over Hensley on any day that ends in the letter 'y'.  I also like exact numbers :)

What are we looking at now? Owen Daniels sounds like $2 mil ($1mil base + $1mil incentives) and Forsett is probably another $1mil. Sooooooo..... we're looking at close to $4 million left if my assumptions are correct. Seems like we are now pretty tight against the cap.

Well we just resigned Cody so that too must also be added into the equation.

I wonder if Sam Koch is in danger. Hopefully not, I'd like to see us stay true to our (well, Harbaugh's) word.

That's not how the cap works. Those two aren't going to account for $3M worth of cap space.

Owen Daniels will only cost $1M due to not likely to be earned incentives (if they are met, they are added in 2015).  Forsett and Cody are probably both under the minimum salary benefit with $635K cap hits each.  When taking 3 guys off of the roster for the rule of 51, the sum total of these three guys will probably cost us $785K, maybe a little bit more if we gave Forsett and Cody any sort of bonus.  Either way, these moves take out less than $1M of our cap space.

Aaaaaaand this is the longer, more informed version of what I wrote above. Thanks!

So basically we are looking at about 4-4.5 mil in space after the 3 signings

More than that.  Check my post above.  Cody and Forsett are estimates, but it's assumed that they are getting the minimum contracts.  All together, the 3 would cost $900K or less, and that's on the high side, because of the rule of 51.  Once those 3 are added, 3 other guys get taken off (3 x $495K) which is why the amount added is so cheap.

So, with our cap at $6.9M or so before these signings, we're probably sitting at a bit above $6M right now.

what is the amount of cap needed to sign our draft picks

Roughly $1.5M of the cap.

With the 3 most recent signings added in, the Ravens are now $6,321,187 under the Cap.

Daniels deal was $1M salary w/ no bonus and, given that Cody and Forsett got vet minimum deals with no bonus, the Cap impact of those 2 was minimal.

So, the 3 signings only reduced the Cap by $655K.

That's crazy.  1 high quality backup and 2 other good backups for peanuts when factoring in the guys that were pushed out of the top 51.

We should be good for draft picks then and might even be able to sign another player or 2 post june 1st

They've got plenty for their rookies, which should only impact the Cap by about $2Mish.

As the 3 recent signings show, veterans can be signed for cheap now and have relatively minor impact on the Cap.
