2014 Salary Cap Update

I would think McClain is too, unless he is willing to take another paycut.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him back, but of course, not at his current rate.  The Ravens seem to really like the guy.

Yeah they do. He's a leader on the defense, but if the same money could be used to re-sign Daryl Smith I think it's an obvious decision who goes.

I could see him being one of those guys that is cut, sits out on the market for a bit, and comes back at a much reduced rate.  Similar to Leach last year.

If he signs a reasonable contract, sure. He is replacable that's all, and if he wants to get paid 4M+ per year I don't see him as a player we should retain.

If we were able to draft a WR like Marqise Lee or Odell Beckham, they bring a dynamic KR ability as well that could replace his production in ST without missing much while adding much more in the passing game.

Yea, 4 mil would be way too high, hopimg around 2-2.5 range. I just hope we're able to draft someone who can come in and be a playmaker from the start.

Well the last contract he signed was 2 years, 7M. I doubt he takes less then that, but we will see.

I think we have to make a decent offer to him.  I trust our management to come up with the right number, but he is our most clutch player outside of Joe and Justin.  Jacoby really plays big in the big moments.

Monroe allowed a free release, but I'm guessing that has more to do with the OL's recurring communication issues.  Still think he needs to be re-signed despite Gruden's undeserved bashing of him.  And his Twitter pic is awesome.

PROJECTED ADJUSTED TEAM CAP AND SALARY CAP COMMITMENT

Based on all of the above, it is estimated that the Ravens will have an adjusted Team Salary Cap of $127.298M. The team’s adjusted Cap consists of the projected league Salary Cap of $126.3M, plus the carryover of the 2013 excess Cap space of just over $1.5M, less adjustments for workout bonuses.

NOTE: There will be further adjustments for earned and unearned 2013 incentives that will raise or lower that adjusted Cap a bit. That incentive adjustment usually isn’t disclosed until March.

So, prior to the team making any other roster moves (releases or retirements) or the restructure of any contracts, the team would enter the 2014 league year with a Salary Cap commitment of $120.365M, leaving them with $6.933M in Salary Cap space, with 54 players under contract or tendered.

This number represents the “Rule of 51” Salary Cap status for the Ravens. During the offseason, when roster can balloon to up to 90 players, only the highest 51 Salary Cap numbers (and all 2013 bonus prorations and all dead money from released players) are counted for Salary Cap purposes.

Now that the season is over, our good friend Brian posted his yearly rundown of the upcoming offseason and the cap implications.  It's always a good read.

thanks for sharing the link sadly I'm more confused then I was before I read it .. what I gleaned was ngata makes more then Joe . and some players just won't be cut because of contracts while other might/will be. what if a player retires while under contract?

If a player retires, we're still stuck with the dead money.  It stays the same whether a player is cut, traded, retires, etc.  Whatever bonus money we've committed to the player stays on our cap no matter what.

Leach is a obvious cap casualty right?

I would think McClain is too, unless he is willing to take another paycut.

Yes, I would think both are pretty definitely gone (unless, as you said, McClain again reduces his base salary).

I think there's a pretty good chance Koch and Suggs are gone too.

Ngata is unlikely, IMO, but possible.

IMO, Yanda and Canty likely stay.

Rice is too costly to cut.

Yeah he's gone.  He's playing something around 20% of the team's offensive snaps.

If this is true, it is sad and is definitely part of why the run game suffered so much as he played 40-45% of snaps last year...

It's not why the run game suffered. The run game suffered because our OL would let 2-3 guys in the backfield constantly. Leach couldn't do anything about that. Even when he got an opportunity, he played pretty poorly this year. With those issues combined, we moved to the spread offense we've wanted to be, and Leach is now phased out and heading towards the free agent market.

While the answer to why the run game suffered in 2013 is multi-dimensional, I sure did not like the fact that we decreased the PT of Leach and mucked with the strategy behind what had been successful last year, especially after we lost Pita in training camp. Not to mention that Leach blocked ZBS quite well under Kubiak.

From the UFA List:

Must Keep

Eugene Monroe (you can't pay Joe 120mil and not protect him. Losing those draft picks would hurt also)

Dennis Pitta (Do I really need to make a case here?)

Jacoby Jones (The guy is just a play maker. Period. He's a touchdown waiting to happen.)

Really Would Like To Keep

Arthur Jones (We need good run defenders)

Daryl Smith (How nice is it that we had Daryl Smith after Ray retired. I'm not saying I don't miss Ray, but Daryl has been awesome)

Would Like To Keep At The Right Price

James Ihedigbo (James has played really well this year. But if we can't sign him at a decent price then move Elam over to SS)

Michael Oher (Yea, the whole line has been bad this year. But if it's the right price keep him)

Corey Graham (He's been a decent 3rd corner. I always hate to see decent corner go)

I think Ozzie read my post. :Dancing_Banana_Homer_by_zorkky:

Low guarantees and backloading contracts for the Broncos.  The Saints have a really low cap number for Byrd this year which make that more manageable.

Aaron Wilson ‏@RavensInsider 28m

Including Steve Smith, Daryl Smith, Jeromy Miles deal, Ravens now approximately $9.061 million under NFL salary-cap limit of $133 million

Still plenty of money to work with.

Think we will wait for a little and see what happens before the draft/after the draft. Teams will release players during then and might be so quality ones too that no one expects. I just hope a quality center or free safety gets released and we can sign them for relatively cheap.

Agreed - don't think we'll see anything until after the draft unless someone drops into our lap.

I could see them try to role some extra cash over for next season or try and use the money they have to begin extensions with Torrey and Jimmy.

I want Jimmy extended now, his price tag could be huge if we wait another year!  I think he is the emerging leader of this D going forward for the Ravens!

What does the draft generally use up? $5m or so?

$2M or so.

Thanks to the rookie/draftee salary scale! Probably used to be around $5M, even more, depending on where you would draft
