The vent thread - Vikings game

243 posts in this topic

Probably read Mike Preston's report.  Heard him on 105.7 this morning....hatin'.

Weather always neutralizes the field.   You take the win and live to see another day.  I find it hard to assess the play of the players because of the conditions.

I thought everyone played well, especially Pitta and Marlon Brown... Flacco had a couple of head-scratching plays, but other than that, we did what we had to do to get the W.

I'm most disappointed in our pass rush, and especially Suggs. He's been invisible the past 4 or 5 games.

I like that idea also, But Harb's could never get along with Rex. He might have to share control and we all know what a control freak Harb's is.

Has our defense made a stop in absolute crunch time?Pittsburgh(twice), green bay, cleveland, cincinnati ...... other teams making it look easy. is this this an issue of the defensive looks and schemes being vanilla or predictable at the end of games/....inexperience?

When guys get bowled over, dragged downfield, whiff on tackles and get stonewalled on the line, I think it is safe to point our finger at someone other than the guy calling the plays.

what a game! Frustrating up until the last couple of unbelievable minutes. I do want to apologize to my fellow raven fans for my extreme pessimism every time we struggle. I get so overly passionate during games and when we play bad its the most frustrating feeling ever! But I just have to stay positive until the time expires. Go Ravens!

On some plays it just seemed like everyone on defense forgot how to tackle .it was like watching the keystone cops but not even close to being funny.

Thats valid. i'm not referring only  to yesterday or making an attempt to let players escape accountability.

Apparently a pacemaker is now required to be a Ravens fan.  Man...

That is true and I guess I was born to be a Ravens fan since I had a pacemaker through childhood.

I'm sure the doctors would understand if you went in and said this:

Doc: What seems to be the problem.

You: I need a pacemaker.

Doc: Any problems with your heart?

You: Nope.

Doc: You a Ravens fan?

You: Yes.

Doc: I understand completely, let's get started.

Never lost the faith. Best game Ive ever been to... nothing to vent about after that game.

Yes some poor tackling and things that made you want to rip your eyes out, but come on guys - that was one of the most amazing things Ive ever witnessed. ENJOY IT!

Here's my thoughts on the defense and the wild defensive collapses.

First, the defensive rankings this season are much improved versus last year which was horrible.
But yesterday was not the first or the second time that this defense failed to make a stop during a critical 4th qtr drive. It's happen numerous times this season, where one defensive stop could either protect the lead or get the offense the ball back and they couldn't make that stop. Fans have screamed the Defense was tired in most cases but it's happen more than once.

It's amazing how well the defense can play for 3 qtrs then in the 4th quarter they go haywire

Some of the missed tackles yesterday can be attributed to the elements, preventing defenders from taking good angles. Elam fell flat on his face when attempting to change directions , although I don't think he would have caught Patterson regardless because I've seen Patterson make other explosive plays this season.

The poor tackling on Gerhart was just horrible took me back to that Dallas game last season. But the entire NFL is plagued with bad tackling that's partial due to less practices now.

I love how people saying Pees should be more aggressive fail to realize rushing MORE guys upfield on the Gerhart run would've made a bad play worse. We were in pure pass rush hunting defense. A blitz on the Patterson screen would've meant the exact same thing.

Watch Canty on the Patterson screen, if he hustled it would've been an easy tackle. Suggs should've got there but didn't, Daryl Smith and Webb BOTH went outside to force it inside, only needed one. Ihedigbo got blocked but could've made the tackle, Elam has a tough job there left alone vs. an electric guy but still did a pretty abysmal job.

On the Gerhart run, Daryl Smith just ran himself out of the play, Canty went the wrong way, Suggs and Upshaw went upfield and had no play, Arthur Brown seemed to be blitzing but overran the play upfield. Elam and Ihedigbo were the only ones with a shot and just infuriatingly threw shoulders at a tough runner who requires wrap-up tackling. How coaches can see players do that and continue to do it and continue to do it and continue to do it and nothing gets fixed is beyond me.

We actually got burned by being too slanted vs. the pass on the Gerhart run, just as Pagano did in the 2011 AFCCG when Green-Ellis and Woodhead made us pay for playing 1 and 2 linemen and getting cute with 9 guys in coverage to throw Brady off. We basically had one D-lineman (Canty) and one linebacker (D. Smith) given that all our other DL and LB were lined up outside rushing upfield.

But more than that, our guys just screwed up. We had a fine defense for the Patterson screen, guys just played it poorly. We had two safeties to limit the damage on the Gerhart run, they just did a poor job.

People calling for more blitzing must forget Rex Ryan's 7 man blitzes being countered over and over again with quick throws to running backs in the flat for 40 yard gains. More important is our rushers getting to the QB, they've been really inconsistent all year despite fairly good sack numbers.

I haven't looked at the Patterson screen in detail yet, but the way the defense got there I instantly thought Webb would make a solid Webb tackle. Once he cut inside it looked bad. Elam was left in no position to tackle him one on one scrambling Patterson with field to the left & right available to elude Elam. But the snow made the decision much easier for Elam as he just fell down. But throughout the game Patterson seemed to be running on regular turf while everyone else was ice skating lol.

On the coaches not correcting bad tackling, well the last CBA basically has hindered that. I mean limited full pad practices during the season, no 2 a days really limits working on tackling basics, can't learn to tackle with technique from walk through practices.

In theory less practices were suppose to mean less hits, less injuries for players, but this morning on Mike & Mike they gave a stat that more guys have gone down with season ending injuries ACLs etc this year so far than in 2012 or 2011.

He has to be more inventive when th3 pass rush is failing. There was a game recently he blitzed webb about 5 times from the slot and he must have registered a pressure every play. We have never seen that since.

He doesn't adjust when things arent going well. And goes prevent to early.

Execution has been uundoubtedly worse. But he deserves blame as well.

Nickel blitzes only work against teams with bad QBs or bad WRs. Minnesota had threats at WR.

they had a bad qb

That's true, but their OL did a great job at picking up whatever blitz we threw at them in the second half. Gerhart's a good blocking back too.

You really shouldn't send a nickel blitz against a team with good wide receivers, because then, more times than not, you have a linebacker or safety in man coverage on a slot receiver, and that's a bad mismatch. If not that, it's zone coverage, and our zone defense is pitiful. Nickel blitzes would have been a bad match up for us.

I read 70,000+

As long as the game is sold out, it will always be 70,000+. They announce the number of tickets sold, not the number that actually show up.

lol @ AP and his crybaby comment. Consider me a former fan AP.

Yeah I've always liked AP, he's quiet and seems classy. And he's a GOAT candidate at the position.  Maybe the pain killers fogged his comments.

That can't be right. That's tickets sold. Capacity is 71k and change.

Yeah you're probably right. I just googled the attendance and that came up.

quiet and seems classy

Not anymore it seems. Calling out the refs is pretty taboo unless it was ridiculous ( replacement refs) plus the fact that he left the game for a majority of it.

The snowballs weren't thrown maliciously and , from what I've seen on facebook , the snowballs were thrown from Vikings fans in ADRIAN PETERSON jerseys.

I don't think I've ever seen a player seriously call out a teams fan base outside of Philly's shenanigans . Thats low and unacceptable.
