Lovie Smith is on their short list, should have a good chance - he could make their D nasty again and might go for a certain DE and not a QB as the 1st pick in the next draft

Why would the #3 yardage-allowed defense draft a DE with the #1 overall pick?

I still don't get firing HCs mid-way through a crappy season. It's going to suck regardless of who takes over and, if the interim isn't going to be the guy next year, then what is the point?

Usually it allows for several things

1. It allows the front office to put a puppet in the head coaching spot. This allows them to see continued development from players and assess them when otherwise they wouldn't be able to. Case Keenum being the main example here. I sincerely believe if Kubiak doesn't bench Keenum for a second time, he doesn't get fired after that game. It is very indecisive and puts the leader of the team in question, which can divide a locker room.

2. It allows the Texans to begin their regime change at an earlier time period. This is crucial since the draft and offseason take a lot of planning.

3. Firing a coach in this scenario actually decreases your odds of winning games, which in turn increases your chance of getting the #1 overall pick.

Don't really buy that benching the formerly 3rd string QB when they were getting routed by Jacksonville is an indictment on Kubiak. Schaub, before he remembered who he was, got them back into that game. The Texans were already playing 'developmental' guys because of injury or just because the regulars stunk.

So Wade Phillips is the guy? They're going to trot someone else out for a press conference in January.

They had lost 11 straight, Kubiak was doing a fine job of that.

I just don't see it. Everyone knew he was going to be gone, anyways. Just seems like a knee-jerk to a bad game. But, hey, this is the same owner who gave Ed Reed $5M per year and cut him, too.

They are interviewing David Shaw of Stanford for the position. Interesting.

They've brought his name up as a hot candidate the last two or three years. It'd be interesting to see how he made the transition. Jim has obviously had a lot of success, but Hamilton hasn't adjusted his offense to suit his team's strengths and the results have been predictably bad. This hire might be more about defense though. Stanford seems to be the only school stopping Oregon with regularity and there might be some fear of expansion of that offense given Kelly's success.

That is interesting since PFT says they plan on hiring an experienced Head Coach. Which would mean someone like Billick, Gruden, Cowher, Lovie(who I think will end up being their number one target as they will want to snatch him before other teams have a chance to steal him) or even Whisenhunt.

Though I guess they along with other teams would consider Shaw the next Jim Harbaugh.

1. This is the second time he benched Keenum for Schuab and the second time it didn't work. I'm not saying its an indictment on Kubiak, but Kubiak had to make a decision. Either let Keenum play and finish games so that they can see what they have in him, or pull him for Schuab. You cant play the hot hand at QB

2. Where did I say Wade Phillips was the guy? I said the regime change could begin earlier. This means that the Texans can start openly looking to fill the position. There will be no speculation or tension on the head coach this way. It will not affect the locker room either because it is already done. It also lets all coaches know that the spot is vacant and allows the Texans to possibly put a new regime in place prior to the draft (which will be critical for this team)

3. You think Wade Phillips is going to do any better than Kubiak? If he does, great, the texans may have found their next head coach. If not, then it also benefits the Texans by securing the #1 overall pick. Either way its a win-win

Wade Phillips won't be the head coach in 2013. So how are they getting a jump start on their new 'regime' when they don't have their head coach? I don't understand that part. All head coaches have historically been hired and in place before the draft, teams usually do it in January. Firing your coach in December doesn't change that - the Texans will hire someone when their season ends regardless.

It's not a win if Phillips does well for 3 games and they win out of the number 1 pick.  They might be fooled into thinking he's good because he turned them around late, so they give him the job only for him to be a bad HC next year, like he's been everywhere.

If you think he is a stud, you never need to justify drafting a DE with a top pick. Cripes, we kept drafting OLB for years despite being strong at that position

At least Kubiak is handling his firing with class:

I don't think he'll be out of a job long, probably end up an OC somewhere after this season

Now I feel bad for him. I had no idea Houston was his hometown. Ugh. I can't imagine how that feels.

I don't think he should have been fired. Foster got hurt and Schaub face planted. They should have seen how he handled the draft with the first pick and seen how the 2014 season played out imo

Yeah. That's another reason why I think the Texans should have just waited until the end of the season to fire him. About the only reason I can think of ending it early is if Kubiak said "Look, I know you're going to fire me anyway so let's just get it over with now."

He's been in Houston for a long time and had some close calls before.  It was probably time for that organization to move on.
