Greatest Play in Football History

32 posts in this topic

After witnessing the ending in Montgomery tonight, I can't help but wonder if that's the greatest play ever. It's better than the Tyree catch because that was just pure luck. The Immaculate Reception is highly disputed and didn't have nearly the implications that tonight's Iron Bowl did. These are just my opinions, of course. Please feel free to mention your personal candidate for greatest play ever. One of the most incredible plays I ever witnessed live was the David Garrard Hail Mary pass that was deflected into Mike Thomas' hands.

My favorite play that I have witnessed, by far. I jumped up and down for that one. One that will always hold a place in my heart though is the Jacoby Jones miracle TD in last year's playoffs against the Broncs.

Poe lets not forget the great game of AJ McCarron in this one

Would you say he's a better prospect than Luck coming out?

Just wondering what your opinion is, Poe.

My favorite play is the holy roller of course--although I didn't witnessed it live
This was prob the best play I've seen live

"This" being the final play in the Iron Bowl tonight?

As bad as Alabama reacted on the run back, that's not a really difficult play for him to make.  Have some perspective, that's not that impressive of a play.

Did you see the similarly impressive game-winning Auburn play kast week agsinst Georgia?

Yup

That was a pure botch by the Georgia DBs though.

All they needed to do was have one of them bat it down lmao

Yep, that's why we've seen just so many missed FG touchdown returns in the NFL/NCAA, especially from 109 yards away, indeed.

*109 yards

But seriously, that's an easy play to make? Then why don't you go down there and do it yourself?? Because, you know, it's kinda as easy as a pass to the flat. Not hard at all. I do it in my sleep, against the number 1 team in the country, on a routine basis.

Jeesh...

For my reaction to this, I'm just going to refer to your avi...

Watch the replay, that was one of the laziest reactions I've ever seen from a team who knew their stupid kicker wasn't going to make the FG.  Even the 3 or so guys who attempted to make the play did not show great awareness at getting into position and trying to disrupt him.

I still said it's a good play.  Just take a step back and get out of the moment before judging it and I think you'll have a more realistic interpretation of it.

I think plays are not only to be determined by how hard the play is to make (which this is a very hard feat... there's a reason why you never see a 109 yard FG return for a TD in the last seconds of a game), but it came against Alabama, the current number 1 team in the country. This sent Auburn to the SEC championship game, and possibly to the national title game as well if OSU loses next week. This came after Auburn's famous hail mary play last week. The magnitude of this play is far greater than the difficulty, which makes this play one of the greatest of all time.

The magnitude argument is fair.  I still think you can't accurately judge something like that while in the moment.

True. Auburn may very well lose next week, and OSU might lose too... meaning that Bama is right back in the championship game.

Agree. I got into this in my OP. That play ended Bama's likely 3-peat.

I don't know if it ended it, but it sure did put a huge damper on the chances of it occurring.

Joe's bomb to Jacoby last year probably the most impressive I've watched considering all the stakes.

Also, Desean Jackson's punt return against NYG to get in the playoffs 3 years ago ranks up there as well.

Today's return was impressive, but a good return man should be able to return that ball against a FG unit. As the announcer said, Bama had all fat guys out there.

In hindsight, 4th & 29. ;)

But really, Jacoby's catch vs Denver is right up there.

I had a special moment when Desean Jackson returned that punt against the Giants. I was getting blown out in the first week of the fantasy playoffs. I had Vick & Jackson playing. I was at a ravens game with my opponent and he was rubbing it in bad. We both thought the game was over and we stopped looking at our phones. When the Ravens game was over we went over to the elevator where I checked my phone. My jaw dropped as I was now winning. When the elevator doors opened, there was Desean Jackson returning the punt. I screamed and my friend was so pissed off he was throwing punches in the air outside of the stadium because he knew he would lose. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen because people were staring at him like he was crazy.

Didnt mean to get off topic, but that was my greatest fantasy moment and IMO greatest play ever in the regular season.

Which is exactly why it happens every single game right?? Because it is soooo easy to return a 109 yard FG back for a TD, at the end of the game, against the number 1 team in the country. So easy a caveman could do it...

Just because it's a rare play doesn't mean it's a difficult one..... I don't think it's really that difficult for a CB to return a kick against a long snapper, a kicker, a holder, and eight offensive linemen.

So, what you're saying is, when McAlister returned that 109 yard FG return back in the mid 2000s to get us a very crucial TD, you didn't think that play was hard? Didn't think that play was monumental?

Monumental yes, and yeah, it is a challenging play, but not nearly as challenging as you're making it out to be.

How about rays interception to seal the game against the Titans in 2000? Not my fav, but in my top3-5 for sure.

Prob goes:

1. Iron Bowl finish

2. Joe to Jacoby

3. Rays mugging of eddy george in 2000
