Why The Hate?

148 posts in this topic

Not all Steelers' fans are ignorant and bandwaggoners. Been a dedicated Steelers fan since my childhood. It's hard not to when you grow up in Pittsburgh. But I don't see how some people can talk about Steelers' fans or call them Squeelers or whatever and expect respect in return. And think that the feeling isn't mutual amongst those in Steeler Nation. The Steelers have a historic franchise and I think some may be jealous of that.Five rings and some teams don't even have 1. Or maybe the fact that the Ravens moved from Cleveland has a lot to do with the hatred.

But I wouldn't say that I hate the Ravens or their fans. Hate is too strong a word. Nor will I resort to childish acts like belittling someone or their city to make my favorite team or city look better. I got away from all of that in grade school. I'm not saying that I like the Ravens because I don't, but I also believe that the same treatment you give others should be the same treatment that you should expect in return.

Well whatever Steelers fans do show up I hope they're like you, although history would indicate that won't be the case, and it is because of those people that so many fans hate the Steelers and their fan base. The ignorant, violent, drunken retards that show up to so many games are the most visible and therefore in the eyes of the public they represent Steelers fans as a whole.

To be completely honest, I can't say I HATE the Steelers; after all, they are pretty admirable rivals. It's what separates rivalries from hatred: rivals try to top each other and make each other stronger to reach a goal, hatred is destructive and stupid.

I'm a Ravens fan at heart. I've only followed the NFL for about five years now, and I KNOW the Ravens haven't had five good years in a row, but I love the team all the same. Believe me, when Ravens play the Steelers, I want nothing more than to see than black and gold on the ground gasping for their football lives, but give me one reason I should hate Pittsburgh fans outside of the game? Are they not as intense as we are? Do we both not love our teams to death? Trash talk can be fun, but all that matters is what happens on the field, cuz if your team doesn't deliver, you're screwed.

Ravens are a good team, Steelers are a good team. This next game is nothing short of meaningful to both, and it's sure to be epic no matter what.

But the Ravens BETTER WIN!!!!
So that's proof that you guys don't have bandwagon fans? I think the talk is dumb myself too but you're logic is flawed. Here's the thing, Bandwagon fans are actually a positive. Teams don't get bandwagon fans unless they are having success...
I agree with you. Who wouldn't want to have bangwagon fans? I wish everybody in the country had Ravens gear on , like they do Yankees hats.

People are making it sound like bandwagoneers are bad. I think it's more a jealousy type deal.

So if you were at a game and got hit in the eye and beer dumped on you would you change your mind about the fanbase? I hate all the name calling and belittling that goes on, but the garbage that I have seen happen from the Steeler faithful in the name of fandom would make you stand up and take notice.

Bandwagoners annoy me a little. The true fans stick thru seasons like last season. Where were all the "bandwagon" fans then? Then when the team does good like this season Ravens fans are coming thru the walls. Last season I still wore my ravens jersey on Sundays.. even though people asked me why. Its about being a FAN.. regardless of a winning or losing record. and Bandwagon fans dont stick around.

The same happens when Steelers fans encounter Ravens fans.. Browns fans.. Bengals fans.. Patriots fans.. and so on. Don't let the actions of individuals dictate yor feelings for the group. The word fan itself comes from FANATIC. Fanatical and over the top behavior is just part of sports for some unfortunately.

For every Steeler fan you've seen trying to turn the game into a personal battle.. I can say the same about Ravens. That Halloween home game we had here the other year seemed to be the day they all rode together.

Oh btw Ravens girl.. pretty sad when there's more history behind the words Terrible Towel than there are Baltimore Ravens! :P

Wow, so that makes us less of a team? Because we've only been in the league for 12 years?

We also have Ravens plates on our van and truck and the Steeler faithful love to smack talk at funerals too, my husband went to one in Cumberland today and was ribbed by a worker at the Funeral home. :o You really need to draw a line somewhere. Same thing happened at my motherinlaw's funeral 3 years ago. So what the yellow rag goes back to dish towels in the '70's we don't care. What we care about is the Steeler faithful think its ok to hit other people with them.
Baltimore Football history is a lot more the just the Ravens and a lot longer then the Terrible Towel's.

Agreed. Especially on that last point.

That's why I don't trash-talk. Other than my own superstitious beliefs about karma (see: 2005 season and 2007 season), I don't have time to deal with name-calling and arguing over something that I have no control over.

Debating is one thing; spewing off at the mouth is another.

It is what it is. When NFL fans hear the words Terrible Towel it invokes memories of domination that's been passed down through generations. I'm not trying to put down the Ravens. You're team has made a name for itself and cleaned it's Browns stain off.. mostly! ;)

I just find it odd that you would choose to put down a significant part in NFL fan history with having such little to call your own. I see quite a lot of hankies being waved in many other stadiums these days.

Well said N.Side. There is a history with the TT that goes way back. I still have my orginal towel which was nothing more then a yellow bath towel with STEELERS written on it with black marker. The One reason Baltimore fans hate it is becuase Myron put the call out for the towels during the 1975 playoff game against the Colts. Which we won on our way to our second SB. I won't even go into Myron Cope and his effect on the city of Pittsburgh. I for one and man enough to admit I cried when he passed.

Anyway, The towel represents so much more then just the Steelers, to a lot of people. Other NFL teams will never understand it's true meaning and what it really represents. The Terrible Towel is not an instrument of witchcraft ... It is not a hex upon the enemy. The Towel is a positive force that lifts the Steelers to magnificent heights and poses mysterious difficulties for the Steelers' opponents only if need be.

Good Luck Sunday 23-10 Steelers

Terrible Towel=Obnoxious Steeler fans in most peoples minds. You can attach all sentiment in the world to it, but ask fans of the other 31 teams and that is what they will tell you.

You're right I don't understand. I guess now would be a good time to re-post my Terrible Towel rant:
I must say waiving around a dirty 'terrible' towel is pretty strange. And who calls a towel 'Terrible'. I use my towel to keep myself dry and fresh. To me I see a towel as a godsend. But to dirty steelers fans, they prefer to take their towels, use it to clean up what ever mess they can. Than bring it to the stadium and wave it around in a spastic fashion. More power to them, I'll keep my towels to dry myself.
Double Yoi

"I must say waiving around a dirty 'terrible' towel is pretty strange." Not strange at all. But like I said, Others will never understand.

"And who calls a towel 'Terrible'". Steeler fans. Thats nothing new.

" I use my towel to keep myself dry and fresh." You sound very sweet.

"To me I see a towel as a godsend." We do too. It's powers are amazing. How many times you gone to a game after a rain and wish you had a towel to dry your seat off. It's multi purpose.

"But to dirty steelers fans, they prefer to take their towels, use it to clean up what ever mess they can. Than bring it to the stadium and wave it around in a spastic fashion." Are you saying that we clean up messes such as dog doo and then spread it around as we twerl our towels, thus causing possible impact of said doggie doo to our opposing fan base? I can honestly say I have never done that or even heard of that happening. However, I can see how that would be some what funny. Disgusting, But funny.

"More power to them, I'll keep my towels to dry myself." Thanks, We appreciate having your permission and glad to hear you'll be staying dry and fresh.

I enjoyed the back and forth banter. Good luck Sunday 23-10 Steelers

Since you love your towel, do you think its OK to hit other fans with it? Encroach on their space with it? Give someone a corneal abrasion with it?

Good question Mod 2. I do not think it's OK, I do not advocate others doing it for spite or any other reason. I go out of my way to make sure I am not invading others space. Thats just common courtesy. I have to say that most of the time I am pretty lucky. At Heinz, I have never sat next to a fan other then a Steelers fan. That dates back to three rivers. Anywhere I travel, Including the games I catch at M&T I usually am in a section that is all Steeler fans. For some reason, we can get along with out hitting eachother. When I go to M&T with my buddies who are Ravens fans I respect their space and they respect mine. It's the right thing to do.

why all the hate ,

I will tell you why , most of the steelers fans I seen in York County, Pa Toothless rednecks, most think pittsburgh isgood because they think they are the Steel Curtain still , heck some of the people in my town probably still think terry bradshaw is the best to ever live and play the game, some one once tried to tell me he was a linebacker in my town and I shook my head sad thing was he was carrying his horrible rag as I call them .

3 reasons they hate us ,
they hate marylanders people here find out I was born in Towson they actualy scoff at me .
they are jealouse baltimore has a better economy,
and lastly Baltimore has a bigger football legacy , The colts a long time team the Stealers only in existance for like 35 years so we had a 13 year hiatus without a team we still loved the game.

I said it before : The Purple and Black will be victoriouse on the 14th at 4:15 the punishment of tomlins squealers begins , they will score NeverMore

Colts - Born 1947 or 1953 depending on who you ask. Gone in 83 (I think the name and legacy should have stayed in Bmore)

Steelers - Born 1933 still going strong.

The steelers only in existence for 35 years??? You idiot, that would mean they came in around 1973. We gave you Johnny U in like 56. It would be best for your Raven brothers if you simply stopped posting. Either that or move cause those toothless rednecks who hate Maryland and think Bradshaw was a linebacker are rubbing off on you. Get your facts straight.

Good Luck Sunday - 23-10 Steelers

Corneal abrasion? Are you for real?

Squirt some Windex on it you'll be alright!

@ TheRavenouse.. people in PA don't hate Maryland. It's like an hour and half away from Pittsburgh. Baltimore is about like driving to Cleveland from here. I don't know of a single person who hates Maryland or Baltimore in fact I think of them as being very similar to here. Same size and tough attitudes.

I do dislike your team. Why? Because they think their us. Damn Marvin Lewis stealing our blueprints and driving them south. Is it any coincidence he was our linebacker coach up to 96 with greats like Lloyd, Greene, Kirkland.. then shuttles of to start up with a Ray Lewis to roll defense with?

The best part about why Ravens fans really hate the Steelers.. because we're big brother. We are you only we invented you. You roll in our shadow in OUR division always trying to be just like big bro. You're team tries damn hard.. damn hard for sure, I respect them big time (well, now that momo Billick is gone at least). The Ravens have a long way to go before they're like big bro though.

Steelers only in existance for 35 years? The freaking game we played YOU in last year marked our 75th anniversery. Don't you remember Bradshaw on the sidelines and all the other greats at the game?

Here.. here's a clip to help you out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFuFTwLaufE

Would you like to see the medical records from 2001? Caught me in the corner of the eye and ripped out my contact lens to boot. The person was almost too drunk to stand. Its not funny, and it shows what kind of person that you are that you feel it is.
