Chances Jacoby Jones is back next year?

384 posts in this topic

I've been thinking all along that we'd let Jacoby go after the season.  I'm beginning to question that notion.  Ever since his injury, his play has been increasing back to what we thought it would be in the preseason.  He's pretty much the number 2 guy once again.

Even in the KR/PR department, he's getting back to being the primary guy.  Doss is starting to see less time on punt returns.  When Jacoby was out, the guy I thought would be his replacement next year, Deonte, still didn't get many looks.

So, it is possible that Jacoby comes back?  We're going to be really tight up against the cap once again, but how much will Jacoby really command?  He's going to be 30 years old, so I can't see him getting any huge deal since his primary role will be as a KR.  I've been thinking that he may come back for a few weeks, and yesterday's performance really got me wondering.  Does he mean more to this team than we realize?

Depends on how much he demands. I wouldn't take him back if he asked for any more than a million dollar raise. He's replaceable.

That's what I think.  I personally wouldn't bring him back if he wants too much.

I'm just trying to wonder from the team perspective.

Yea...Kind of like the Boldin situation.

The thing is, he isn't a necessity.  More of a commodity.  Doss is a good returner and has played well at receiver so far.  Marlon Brown is only in his first season and is already becoming a major component of this offense.  I'd like to have him back, but there is no reason to break bank just to keep him.

Zero chance, will command/want too much money. Team needs to draft a top tier receiver to go along with Smith and Brown.

I know he's had some big plays, but he's really not a guy who can climb the ladder or fight for position on the ball. He has to be open, and that doesn't happen all that often. Plus we have other good returners. I think he'll cost too much for what he's worth, especially after this year's playoffs.

He's already making more than he is worth...unless he comes back at vet minimum I'd say zero chance.

I don't know how big of a deal he'll get.  It's hard to say when he's getting up there in age and is primarily a KR with a least a little something at WR.  Say it was $2.5M a year.  Would you consider it?  I'd have to think about it at least.

I'd rather get Monroe/Daryl Smith/Pitta back before Jacoby. If he doesn't want too much, sure. I'd love to have him back.

Yeah those guys plus Art Jones are definitely the priorities.

At this point, i doubt Art Jones is gonna come back. Some team hungry for a defensive lineman thats good at run defense and just as good at rushing the QB will overpay.

He's not a priority. Maybe if he is still a FA after the draft and we don't come away with a WR for some reason. Still I find it extremely unlikely.

He is should be resigned. Dump Thompson and Doss and you have money to play him. He has a clear role to blow the top off of defenses. He is the best at it on the team because of his speed. He is the best PR AND KR in the league. Why get rid of a player that has a clear role and is the best in the NFL at KR/PR? He commands respect, the the Doss and Thopson don't. Doss and Thompson can be replaced in free agency or draft. He will not be too much.

What has Thompson done???? Nothing!

What has Doss done besides show that he plays scared? He was benched yesterday for his KR/PR gaffes and inability to catch balls.

A drafted WR is no guarantee. Resign ballers. Besides, you can't knock his age because at 31, he is the fastest player on the team.

I had no clue the Doss had been benched I didn't see that reported anywhere I thought I saw him on the field  several times

I don't know if he was benched exactly, but Jacoby started seeing a lot more time at PR since Doss wasn't making good decisions.  He lost time at WR as well.

Slim. He isn't going to get offered what he is making this year by the Ravens and the team simply has other talent they would rather resign (Pitta, Art Jones, Monroe or Oher possibly, Torrey Smith in a contract year). I also think they like their young receivers more than paying Jacoby what he likely (and correctly IMO, he has developed well in his 2 years here from when where he was when he signed). Plus I think the team likes its young receivers like Marlon, Deonte, and Mellette when he is healthy. Throw in Tandon who has been a solid punt returner himself and Deonte who can return kickoffs and I would think the front office will move on with Torrey and company plus maybe some new draft picks next year

was wondering where he was this year, until the Jet game.

I will give him this - he does give second (and 3rd and 4th) effort. Just when you think he is down, he spins and gets a few more yards!

Love that.

As for next year, we will see. Let's watch what happens this year.

Don't be lumping everyone together into the "We" category.

The record here will clearly reveal this fan believes Jacoby  was a key addition that made our receiving corps dynamic.  This fan has also been clear player sets are all about chemistry. There is no "we" here.  He is essential but the team is still missing that "go to" possession receiver.

Lets be clear about Jacoby Jones age. He is 29. His birthday is July 11th 1984. Which means he will be 30 next year when the season begins. He will not be 31 at any time next year.

Lastly, he caught that TD vs the Jets with his hands. No body trap at all. That was a heckuva catch on a long wind-borne ball that was "pushing" for the sideline.

But aging is catching up with us, though not the aging of players.

When is 57 like 70?

I'd be ok with it for cheap.

He's a good kr who is a pretty good WR #3. He'd be a hell of a 4th WR.

Brown could be a more than capable WR #3. Maybe #2.

Torrey is the #1. We need the #2. That'll prob come in the draft

Maybe not a popular opinion, but I hope we find a way to keep him. It seems that he and Joe are developing a connection and not just on the long ball. We've got to stop the WR revolving door for a couple of years and gain some stability in the passing game.

Dragonfly is THE X Factor on this squad.

Hes not consistent which is why the Texans dumped him as the #2 however he has proven that his 1 or 2 plays per game can change the game which is the X factor SB teams need. He might do nothing all game then boom 80 yard catch or boom 40-50 yard return to set up a short field for the offense. We need to keep him but also develop other weapons.

Letting Jones go wouldn't create much of a revolving door situation. Assuming Pitta is re-signed, Joe will have him, Torrey, Brown and Doss back next season. I'd rather see that group along with an early-round WR draft pick continue to grow with Joe over the long-term.

Had Pitta not gone, we wouldn't have missed Q's production as much.

JJ is streetballer, he's essential to 2 units , he is a deep threat , influences field position for the offense & he's a threat to score on ST.

Personally, I agree with cutting Doss and Thompson. These guys have David Reed talent written all over them. If one should stay, I would keep Deonte as a backup/Specialist on PR/KR, whichever is less likely to get Jacoby hurt.

2014 WR's

#1 Mike Evans

#2 Torrey Smith

#3 Brown

#4 Jacoby

I say let Jacoby walk unless he signs for about vet minimum or $1mil for at most 2 years. He'll be moving out of his prime and his speed (which is the main component of his game) will decline. The Ravens can draft another speedster in the 2nd or 3rd rounds to complement Torrey, and Marlon can develop into a the possession receiver/Red-zone threat we desperately need. Add Pitta, and our receiving core is unreal
