Matt Elam's tackling

Well duh.. I'm talking about the old man people wanted to stay. He should of went out on top instead bounce around losing teams. He was a legend, last 3 seasons have been sad for him

Ed has such a sense for his place in NFL history. I wish he would have went out on top with Ray and would have had the best Canton weekend ever in 5 years. He had nothing left to prove, besides the want to pick up a pay check.

elam isnt good enough. 2 passes defended all season..has never looked menacing as a ball hawk and is so often the weak link.

im not a fan and he has earned a grade D - for a first round pick this year.

big dissapointment but im not shocked. he has a low football IQ and below average physical attributes

Since when is a safety's only job to be a ball hawk? Smh.

Below average physical attributes? If you hadn't gone crazy yet, you just did lol

We gauge players by a few that have been highly successful in their rookie year...  Most players are not...  Everybody seems to forget that the guy has only played 9 games in the NFL...

well he is not playing his normal position lets put him at strong safety like he did at florida and find a legitimate free safety during the offseason

He's been very underwhelming , And I saw what you saw... Shoulder drop tackles. That's not good enough. + he was bad in coverage on a few plays.
He's not attacking, he's waiting for runners to get to him... that's a problem!

I agree H8R.  I hate when I see DB's doing that!  run up, meet the ball carrier head on, square up and then drop the hammer on that cat while wrapping him up!  textbook tackling 101!  lol!

I'm going to have to disagree with you two here.

When he is up in the box he attacks, made a few tackles at the line of scrimmage. But when he has been the last line of defense he waits like he is supposed to because if he takes a step forward and get's juked it's a TD.

You wait in the ball handlers path to at least make him slow down for your pursuit to get there.

Agreed! But he still needs to learn how to tackle properly, especially playing SS.

I just finished re-watching 1 Winning Drive and noticed that the DB's coach was talking to Elam after he made a tackle instead of going for the ball.  He told him; "On that last one (pass) you were like...waiting!  Go get the ball!"  Elam then said; "The guy was jumping up so I just went and hit him!"

Teryl Austin then told him; "Forget him!  Go for the ball!  Let's get a pick!  Let's get your first one!"  He then went on to say; "Go after that ball because here's what happens; if you just continue to never go after the ball, they'll will throw the ball to you every time cause they know you'll never go after it....you'll just go for the hit."

Then I loved it when he told Elam; "You got to be a guy that they are scared to throw the ball to because they're afraid you'll pick it!"

Awesome!!

he's not earl thomas, but he's not a D.. I would give him a C+ and i think his instincts are better than his tackling, which needs to be emphasized over the week during practice.

I don't normally start threads and after a win I try to overlook all the little problems. That being said I'm really concerned about Elam's tackling. Not once today did I see him wrap up. He's throwing his shoulder and getting a good pop but if the ball carrier can take the initial hit they can continue to stay upright. He's getting in position and flying to the ball,I just need to see him finishing the tackle. Your thoughts ?

Unfortunetly, this type of "tackling" seams to be rampant in the NFL. I'm guessing these guys are looking to make the "big hit" highlite reels. Aside from the obvious advantage of wrapping your arms around a player when tackling, the other thing it does is allows some lee-way on the H2H rule. If you hit helmets AS your arms are spread out in a tackling motion, you have a better chance of a no flag than if you lay a shoulder into a guy with your arms down at your side, and your helmets hit. Ed Reed drove me crazy with his non wrap-up style of takling guys.....which often times only slowed down the guy, but didn't put him on the ground.

Woof, I know the kid is grumpy about being assigned a position he isn't accustomed to playing, but when given opportunities to execute what he loves doing he's been subpar. It is hard to hear about him having trouble adjusting when he can't execute the basics...I fear what is coming in Detroit if he cannot wrap up in the secondary.

The secondary got smoked in the final 2 minutes by a backup RB and a rookie WR w/ little chemistry w/ his QB...

This guy is really disappointing... I just don't see him becoming anything more than average at best. He'll probably end up like Abram.

his argument has more merit after this game

He's played solid football overall.  The guy's still a rookie.  I'm not saying he played well at all today, but his argument is tired and has no merit.

hes pathetic...firstly hes immature, running around like a loon and thanks to a bad call got his fumble recovery which is the only thing hes done this year, and second, hes nowhere near the ball cant tackle and is just a poor football player. No IQ. he wont get an interception for 3 years if this is the kind of player he is

He's fine.

The Gerhart one was pathetic but the Patterson one was snow.... He couldn't get footing and slipped......

Yea, I get tired of watching people throw rooks under the bus so quickly.  Many of our rookies the past few years have struggled, but have been solidifying their games (ex. Jimmy Smith).  And today with the inclement weather makes it tough to assess the play of players.

I did find it amusing after Elam fell, he was on the ground and his legs were still kicking as if he was running.

Somebody needs to make a GIF for that.

Ray Ray should open an off season tackling school.  He could wrap em up and blow em up at the same time.

Actually, brother, I was one of the biggest Elam supporters there was. Look at my sig. I think you have me confused with someone else, as I have been supporting him amidst a bunch of hate the past few weeks.

You are correct.  I was think of Sami lol, but I know we've had our disagreements on some player before.  Either way, my argument still holds.  He's still a rookie and has plenty of time to get the hang of things.  As mentioned above, how many people wrote Jimmy off his rookie year?  They all look stupid now.  If in a few years, Elam still isn't playing fantastic ball, I'll concede.  Right now, it's way too early to cast judgment on a rookie playing out of position.

The Patterson one wasn't his fault
