Thoughts on Eugene Monroe After Bears Game?

also consider that Peppers really only got through twice. It just so happened that we couldn't get rid of the ball quickly on those plays.

1. You clearly didn't watch this past game or any recent games.

2. Double teams are a common element in all blocking schemes regardless of the ability of the center. Fact.

While double teams do occur in football, lineman do need to be able to block on their own as well. Gino has an inability to do that. Fact!

You still have failed to explain how Shipley is useless. I do believe it was his block that sprung Ray for a 47 yard run amongst other good blocks in Sundays game.

2. When did I say Shipley was useless?

He was going one on one with a freak of nature without the starting LG next to him.

I'm not too concerned

I agree. He is still new to our team and the scheme is still all screwy. Once the team settles in he will too.

It's Julius Peppers.

Seriously ^.  And besides the big plays he got he did a solid job of keeping him in check.  It's not like he was constantly getting pressure on Flacco.  Just made a few big plays.

Were acting like he got trashed by a backup D-lineman.

Monroe has done nothing but improve since he has got here. Last week against the Bears, our line as a whole blocked better. Rice was able to show he is still the Rice we all know and love. Part of that was because of the offensive line, and yes we still need to fire Castillo but just maybe our players are finally figuring out Juan's system and maybe that's why they did so well as well.

Re-sign Monroe for sure, Franchise him if we have to but he is a keeper.

Anyone and everyone without help, will have a problem with Pep.  He is a beast.  He rarely gets stuck by hand jabs and has incredible speed for a big man.

What is most impressive about him is his ability to study his opponents and learn their tendencies.

He does well against quarterbacks that stand in one place.

Eugene is still a beast. I like him a lot at LT.

I feel sorry for Monroe.  He's been stuck with highly incompetent co-workers his whole career, first in JAC & now in BAL.

Shipley had his best game last week, but so did Gino. Gradkowski has actually been playing much better the past few weeks while Shipley has mostly been a mess.

I don't think Castillo has much of a say anymore. We have gone away from the ZBS and used a lot more power schemes recently. Also running a lot more out of pistol and shotgun.

Regarding Monroe, I agree that he needs to be resigned.

He's a dominant pass blocker and run blocker, and he's quick and strong enough to play any scheme.

Of course it was a good trade, unless he leaves in FA because we can't afford him.

We can afford him, assuming he doesn't want a ridiculous (10M per) kind of deal.

Bad lg hurt Monroe.

thats a kop out, the interior played the best it had all season, evidenced by the rushing yards. Monroe just had a poor game, it happens. I expect him to be back to allowing little to no pressure this week, let alone sacks.

How does a bad LG make the LT get beat around the edge? Not only a cop out, but a cop out with no basis.

He's been here 6 weeks and you think he's going to give us a hometown discount? of course he's going to want top 5 money.

But no one's going to pay that.  The draft is loaded with guys that can play LT and Albert will be the top FA.  That $7M figure isn't a hometown discount.  That's probably his value.

Nah he got beat on one play and gave up a coverage sack when Flacco tried to roll out left.  He got beat on a play, it happens.

Yeah, 7m is reasonable.  He might get more from Arizona, that'd be the team that would need an LT and could pay for one.

Yes they will, thats literally why the franchise tag is around 10m and Albert was given the designation.

7m was the market value of Bushrod and Cherilus, two career turnstiles. Either way the price goes up the longer we wait.

No one's paying $10M for Monroe.  He won't even make it to the market to see if he can get that much.  I'm betting we sign him during the exclusive negotiating period at $6-8M annually.

Lets hope so, if we don't sign him soon he's gone.

Didn't Jake Long get just under $9 million? Monroe will not get Jake Long money.

Jax tried to send him there first and they didn't want him.

He had some good plays and some, not so good plays. This happens in the NFL mostly due to the quality of the competition. Other than that I see no other issue to be concerned with Monroe at this time.

The Franchise tag refers to the top paid players over the past 5 seasons, including all OL positions. There have been some big deals over that time like Joe Thomas. Ryan Clady, and Carl Nicks, which bumps up the tag but that is the elite of the elite. More recent deals to guys like Jake Long and Will Beatty have been much closer to 7M, which is much more in line with the level of play we have seen from Monroe. So it has nothing to do with a home town discount and everything to do with what players are currently making in the open market.
