Thoughts on Eugene Monroe After Bears Game?

76 posts in this topic

So, obviously this site did an article on how Eugene Monroe allowed two sacks and a fumble against Julius Peppers. That had a lot of people instantly tossing him under the bus and saying he wasn't worth the trade.

As we all know, ProFootballFocus.com puts out grades and Monroe only graded out at, I believe, -1.3 in pass protection. When you consider what he gave up, that must mean he was actually solid for the rest of the game. PFF gave him four green grades for the rest of the games he had with us, and even if you don't like PFF, he was routinely solid. I've noticed that he's frequently on his own in pass protection with no extra help slid his way. He routinely not only handles his man, but takes them completely out of the play on a lot of plays.

I will admit, he gives up the occasional sack, but are we willing to give up one sack a game if Joe is clean for the rest of the game and not getting hit from the blindside?
What do you think? Do you still like Monroe after that game? I do, and I think the Ravens will resign him. Hey, maybe if these sacks keep coming here and there, he'll be cheap.

Also, keep in mind that even J.O. gave up two sacks to Dwight Freeney and Walter Jones gave up two to Osi Umenyoira(sp).

Monroe has been pretty solid for us, I like him quite a bit. Julius Peppers is a freak and was having a good day .. I'm scared to think about what would have happened if that was McKinnie playing.

I see Monroe as a long term fit here. I don't think he's going to command a massive contract, I think we could lock him up at a reasonable price. After playing in Jacksonville for so long, he's gotta love this organization.

One thing I forgot to mention about the game which could have affected Monroe(It REALLY affected Suggs and Dumervil) was the fact that the field was so wet and the Ravens aren't used to that. That obviously affected footing and his confidence in the placement and all.

Considering what we traded for him, he's been an excellent pickup for us. You can't find young potential franchise LT's in the 4th or 5th rounds. No way, unless you get lucky with a gem from a very small school.

Like David Bakhtiari, right? I just can't believe the amount of people complaining about it. Even if he is only an above average LT, we got him for a fourth and fifth round pick. That's incredibly good value.

you hit the nail on the head not making excuses, but everyone was having issues getting traction on the field . Peppers is a very good player he needs some credit too . Monroe IMO is a definite upgrade over mckinnie and very good value for what we gave up.

Bro, you know how WR's have the advantage against CBs when the field is a giant slushee, because they know where they are going and the CB has to try to react but the field doubles your reaction time. It's the same thing with the lineman and pass rushers.

The reason that the Bears benefited and we didn't is because our pass rushers often bull rush while Peppers was using his speed. Monroe would have a hard time containing him in normal conditions but then with the slush, Peppers just needs to make one move and Monroe is going to be sliding or stuck out of the play.

I think this performance will be rare, I wouldn't be concerned.

and Monroe just got picked up by trading in couple weeks ago; very few just comes in in the middle of the season and are playing this well at the hardest position in the football.

We need to lock this young Monroe down for long term.....who cares about the media and nobody knows better than the Ravens nation themselves...

Yeah, he had a bad game.  It happens.

I still think he's a good player, and will help the team win.  The only team I think could reasonably over pay him and he'd go there might be Arizona.

I added that in to a comment that I made to another person. In my reading of how many people were throwing him under the bus, I don't think anyone considered that at all. It made a huge difference in my eyes.

He had one bad game in poor conditions and without the starting LG next to him after being near perfect in the rest of his games. I'll call this game the anomaly.

I think he stunk a little bit, but look at that field and the man he was blocking. I will say this though, as slowed as Suggs and Dumervil were on that field, the Bears played on the same field and they looked a lot better from a pass rush standpoint. If we had the type of time McCown had in that pocket, we might have been able to put up 35+ points.

I wasn't really happy with his performance in Chicago but he's been a solid guy for us. Considering what we've given up to get him, I'd say it was a great deal

Anyone and everyone without help, will have a problem with Pep.  He is a beast.  He rarely gets stuck by hand jabs and has incredible speed for a big man.

What is most impressive about him is his ability to study his opponents and learn their tendencies.

He does well against quarterbacks that stand in one place.

Eugene is still a beast. I like him a lot at LT.

Even Joe Thomas let's up sacks. Monroe is a good player and one regular season game does not define his tenure here. He needs to be locked up long term.

Did we double team Peppers?

Both peppers sacks came against man on man blocking.  One was an absolute coverage sack though.  He just got beat once really badly if I can recall correctly.  I'm not remembering that well considering how weird that break made the game feel.

No, Monroe is our best lineman right now and Shipley is useless.  The others need more help.

Had a terrible game, but I still think he's an upgrade over McKinnie and will hold down the spot for a few seasons successfully.  I doubt his contract will be too high and he will basically solidify our o-line with us just needing a RT in the next draft.  Since he's young we will also be able to keep our line together for a few seasons instead of having to break it up every few years or move guys around.

How is Shipley useless?  Did you watch the Bears game?  If anyone is useless it's Gino.  He lacks strength and the ability to block a defensive lineman one on one.  He always requires the help of a guard.

1. You clearly didn't watch this past game or any recent games.

2. Double teams are a common element in all blocking schemes regardless of the ability of the center. Fact.

Outside of a few bad plays given up by Monroe to Peppers, the entire offensive line actually balled out against the Bears, including Gino.

Tough game against a tough opponent.  I'm not too worried.  He's played pretty well in his first few games here.
