The 2013 NFL Draft Hindsight Game

20 posts in this topic

So, there is a feeling of the apocalypse going on in the boards these past few months, so I thought it would be fun to just play a "Hindsight Draft game". This is in no way designed to be disrespectful of players we did draft, we are very fortunate to have these guys on our team! It's just a way to say, wow, can you imagine if we got BLANK instead of BLANK. Obviously, their careers are just beginning but I thought it would be a fun game to get our minds off of the offensive struggles of our team.

Rules: No trade backs, no trade ups. Just who was still available at the time we picked.

I'll start with mine.

Rd1. Pick 32-Kiko Alonso, LB, Bills

Possible early favorite to win ROY on defensive side of the ball. Great to see him next to Smith.

Rd2. Pick 56-Tyrann Mathieu, S/DB, Cardinals

The Honey Badger wasn't on too many radars due to his off the field issues and size concerns but shows he is still a play maker.

Rd3. Pick 94-Brandon Williams, DT, Ravens

I love this kid, I am glad we got him. Haloti hasn't had the best season but they keep him in due to his contract. He did have a great game against Bengals though, but if we were to cut Haloti in off season, I'd fully trust Williams to get the job done on any position of our DL.

Rd4. Pick 129-Jordan Mills, OL, Bears

Not exactly setting the world on fire but hey, he is starting and he isn't exactly giving up sacks. QB Hurries, yes, but not a ton of sacks, I would start him at RT and move Oher to LG.

Rd4. Pick 130-Zac Stacy, RB, Rams

The clearcut bell cow of the Rams offense, maybe he could of been the spark we needed? I was looking for Centers in this draft, so far nothing really jumped out at me (Schwenke over Brandon Williams wasn't worth it to me). Going to see what Guards/Centers are out there.

Rd5. Pick 168- Marcus Cooper, CB, Chiefs

Released by 49ers, Signed by Chiefs. He filled in greatly for Brandon Flowers and has had several interceptions and defended passes for his new squad. He was originally taken in the 7th.

Rd 6. Pick 200 -Armanty Bryant, DE, Browns

A rotational lineman for the Browns has impressed in limited play time. Although Rick Wagner is a project, I am doing this mock hindsight draft regarding players who have taken several snaps on the field and who are contributing in the now.

Rd 6. Pick 203-Joseph Fauria, TE, DET

Acrobatic catches and all, a great TE to have at the back end of the 6th round.

Rd7. Pick 238-Robert Lester, S, CAR

I would love to have a scheme with Digs, Mathieu and Lester out at the same time. Mathieu can play a little bit of Corner so I like the idea of having Lester on the team.

Rd7. Pick 247-Joplo Bartu, OLB, ATL

Honestly, not sure where he would fit in on our team. I looked at Guards and Centers, nothing really out there this year besides first 2 rounds. Bartu would give our defense a different look.

Alright, let's see what you would of done differently in hindsight. Again just a fun game, love our team, this isn't meant to be ungrateful to our players or to Ozzie.

I think, I would take Keenan Allen in the 2nd round over Mathieu. I agree on Kiko, though. Not that I feel like Arthur Brown was a wasted pick, but atleast for now Alonso looks like the better prospect.

This list is a bit premature however. You need 3 to 4 years to really evaluate a players carreer in the NFL. Just sayin. Still, it's a fun, idea. I would need to think about a while longer however.

The one player I really agree with is the Honey Badger.  I really wanted him on the team and knew he would have an immediate impact.  Besides that I'm pretty happy with the draft, though Fauria would be helpful now. I think Lewis-Moore will turn into a good player down the line for use, though I don't know where he'll play cause the d-line is stacked.  Just cause a player isn't having playing well now doesn't mean they won't come along.

Which is what I posted....

I don't even know why I try lol

This was just a fun game saying if we could get re-draft in hindsight, with guys who are performing in the now....

I think he was just reiterating your point.

I agree with pretty much everything. I would of also loved getting Jordan Reed.

I'll play.  I'm not picking anyone that we drafted, even though I'd probably take a few over the guys below.

Round 1 - Kiko Alonso - ILB

Round 2 - Jordan Reed - TE

Round 3 - Brian Schwenke - C

Round 4 - Kenny Stills - WR

Round 4 - Zac Stacy - RB

Round 5 - Jeff Baca - G

Round 6 - Armonty Bryant - DL

Round 6 - LaAdrian Waddle - OT

Round 7 - Marcus Cooper - CB

Round 7 - Matt Scott - QB

I actually still really like our draft, and think that we got several very good immediate starters (not given outside of the top of round 1) and a handful of guys presently on special teams or shelved in IR/practice squad who are going to be decent future contributors. After Elam, Brown and Williams, everyone else we got IMHO was just gravy.

Sure in retrospect there will always be someone else who is having a good year, but a good year in a different system with different teammates and with different opponents doesn't always translate. Would a Zack Stacy move the chains when a Ray Rice, Bernard Piece couldn't? Doubtful. Would a Marcus Cooper even see the field on the Ravens with Webb and Smith both having decent years? Doubtful. And if we took a WR, would Marlon Brown ever get to show us that he's the real deal, probably better then anyone we could have drafted? Doubtful.

Ha. I had Schwenke there too but wanted Williams! I guess if we couldnt keep anyone we actually drafted we would be very similar. I looked at Baca but since I dont get cable tv, i don't watch too many games this year (just got cable today actually, DVR and all!).

Matt Scott?

Scott is a guy I really liked as a developmental player.  I didn't see too much else that I liked so I figured, hey, why not?

man Im happy with our draft.

1. when Elam can move back to his true position of SS and learn the NFL ropes a little better I think he can become another Pollard/ Adrian Wilson

2. When Brown becomes 100% healthy, he will be a stud

3. Brandon Williams is a beast

Looking back at it now, I would've loved to get whoever the best center in the draft was and maybe another left guard (I love KO but since he's injured it would've been nice) and then definitely someone like Joseph Fauria, Tyler Eifert, or Jordan Reed. Kenny Stills looks good too but so does Marlon Brown so just some o-line men and a TE would've made this a better draft class based on the past 10 weeks imo

I had trouble finding a WOW center outside of Travis Frederick and I am not for taking a center in the first round...ever...

Yea I would never want to draft a center in the first round. If Travis Frederick would have been avaialbe in the third round I would've taken him tho. What would've been better is if Matt Birk went all Brett Favre and decided to not retire haha

I'm actually surprised how well Frederick is playing in the games I've seen of him at least.  Im with you, unless the centre is Mangold I'm not taking him in the first, but I'll be damned if Jerry Jones didn't actually do his homework on a guy no one had on their radar in the first and the kid ends up playing well.
