State of the QB

64 posts in this topic

Breaking News:

Locker: done for the year w/ a Lisfranc tear

Cutler: out again w/ an ankle injury less than a game after coming back

Flynn: will re-sign with the Packers after Wallace's injury

In other news, Nick Foles is looking phenomenal this season, throwing 10 TD, 1 TO and making 73% of his passes in his last 2 starts.

  • The Titans were only going to go as far as they could as long as Jake Locker was the QB. Locker really improved, this season. It's unfortunate for Tennessee, though; because, I can't see them doing much with Fitzpatrick at quarterback.
  • Jay Cutler's days in Chicago should be done after this season. I'm not saying the Bears won in spite of him; rather, after the whole 2010-11 NFC Championship game fiasco and the injuries he has dealt with these past couple of years, it's just time for the Bears to accept things and move on from the Cutler era. If anything, Marc Trestman is the right coach to have to even develop a rookie, next year.
  • I figured Mike Flynn Matt Flynn was going to sign with the Packers the moment A-Rod went down with that injury. But, I still stand by theory that the Packers are complete garbage without Aaron Rodgers leading the team.
  • And, finally: What if Nick Foles turns out to be the best quarterback from the '12 NFL draft? LOL...

Time will show that Nick Foles is a fluke.

He's thriving with an ensemble cast of receivers. Give him a star FA (PHI loves to throw money at them) or a promising rookie and then wait to see what he can do.

Lol, just like time was supposed to show that Tom Brady was a fluke a little more than a decade ago. How did that one turn out??

Wouldn't be any different than Tom Brady being the best QB in his draft class lol. We've seen late round QB gems rise up before. Foles has all the physical tools you need at the QB position. If he can nail down his placement, he'll be going places.

By the way, remember the saying that a good QB makes an average receiver look great? Well, I think we're seeing the beginnings of that with the Foles-Cooper connection.

His deep throw TDs have all been luck. None of them were good passes against the Packers.  One bounced off a defender and the other was under thrown.

Every city's favourite person is that city's backup QB - even in Baltimore if this board is anything to go by. I reckon backups always do well because opposing coaches don't have any film on them yet. True he could yet be a Brett Favre or a Tom Brady, but he could just as easily be a Colin Kaepernick or a Tim Tebow or any other backup QB who had six good games and soon reverted back to the mean.

And how exactly was Brady not close to being a fluke in his first couple of games?? We know how Brady turned out now, but back then, how in the heck we would have known that a 6th round backup would have 3 super bowl rings today?

I'm not going one way or the other with Foles, but two of his TDs were under-thrown in to double coverage against the Packers. That is fluke.

A lot of his bigger plays seemed more luck than skill, but I guess time will tell.

I'm saying if you're going to invoke Tom Brady there's also a lot more dudes who have flamed out.

I live in Eagles Country so I'm forced to watch way more Eagles games than I'd like. Foles has never had the goods. He's had a a nice run this year, sure, but consider the defenses he's done it against, paired with the fact that there's not much film on him under Chip Kelly's offense.

Teams will figure him out eventually.

Not to burst your bubble, but you do know the Raiders had the number 9 pass D when he torched them for 7 TD's, right?

True. But I am also saying that there have been late round QB gems who have been better than their early round counterparts. Just because he was drafted in the middle of the draft does not make him a guy who will just bust.

Interim QB Watch:

Mike Glennon played beautifully in Motown, making two-thirds of his passes for 247 yd & 2 TD, including an 85-yd bomb to newbie Underwood.  He kept his cool despite being sacked 4 times for -17 yd.

Scott Tolzien really struggled throwing the ball, but didn't make any dangerous passes that would get get INT'd.  He had an ingenious double-spin move to beat 2 defenders and score a TD run.  After stalling late, he was benched for the re-united Cheesehead Matt Flynn.  He sparked the offense in the 4th quarter and OT, going 21/36 for 218 and 1 TD and engineering a 16-pt comeback to ultimately tie the game.

Jason Campbell got knocked around in the 1st quarters of the game, struggling to get yardage from anyone not named Gordon until he leaving the game with a probable concussion.  Brandon Weeden then did what he does best: make less than 45% of his passes and throw a mindless Pick-6.

Chad Henne continues to scrape by on the road by playing it cautious, dumping the ball off to his backs and making short passes to his receivers.  He finished a respectable 23/32 for 238 yd.  Case Keeum, on the other hand, finally cracked in his new role, completing just over half of his passes for 169 yd and an INT.  He only hit star WR twice for 36 yd and breakout TE Garrett Graham 5 times for 32 yd, despite JAC having the 2nd worst-ranked defense against the TE.  It's looking inevitable that HOU will draft a QB with their (1st?) draft pick.

Kellen Clemmons was superb as a game manager, feeding his backs like a vending machine; STL would finish with 258 rushing yd.  He made less than half of his passes for just 167 yd and 1 YD, but he didn't turn the ball over against a D very good at forcing them.  He out-dueled another long-time benchwarmer, Josh McCown, who had a statistically monstrous day.  He completed 36/47 passes, almost 80%, for 352 yd and 2 TD.  However, he struggled to maintain drives and made the cardinal sin twice: an INT and a lost fumble on his only sack of the day.  Clemmons' humble antics allowed him to score double what McCown's high-powered offense did.

Ryan Fotzpatrick showed how he earned his nickname, the Amish Rifle, with a stellar performance against OAK's underrated D.  He completed 30/42, almost 75%, for 320 yd and 2 TD and also rushed 5 times for 26 yd.  He managed to make his youngster WRs, Hunter and Wright, look like stars, with each nabbing at least 103 rec yd and a TD.  Matt McGloin couldn't replicate Fitz's alchemic ability to transform a severely handicapped offense.  He threw 19/32 for 267 yd, 1 TD and his 1st career INT (at his own 9).

Mike Glennon was my favorite QB in the last draft class, and I predicted he'd wind up being the Bucs starter, but he's playing better than I expected.  Especially considering the Bucs bad offensive scheme.

my thoughts exactly, wasn't taken serious at all when I said during the offseason that Freeman will lose his job to him before the season ends and he's got room to grow

Still sold on him after today's epic failure, including the no-contact fumble of his?
