Dan Dierdorf - what a jerk

58 posts in this topic

I wouldn't call him biased, but I definitely agree that Dierdorf is a terrible announcer. He, Collinsworth, and Gus Johnsons are the guys I can't stand to hear speak.

On the other side, while Gruden may have an annoying voice/speech pattern, I actually think he's a great announcer and analyst.

Provide evidence that Diedorf was anti-Ravens.

...He was pro-Ravens on practically all reviewed plays. I saw no hating. HE is a good and solid broadcaster!

Agreed!

Not biased but an AWFUL announcer. I nearly muted my TV after he said the Begals were in deep "doo doo". He sounded like a petulant child at times.

I thought this was one of the most objective game commentaries I've ever heard him do. In the past, he has irritated me by pointing out dirty play on the Ravens' part. For him to maintain any degree of objectivity is an improvement. While his knowledge of the game is unquestionable, his credibility is very questionable. His nickname was Dirty Dan Dierdorf when he played for the St. Louis Football Cardinals. He and Conrad Dobler were infamous leg-whippers as offensive linemen but they kept their QBs clean.

He is not a very good role model for clean play IMHO.

I hate his voice but that's about it. He's not the worst. Colinsworth and Gruden get that award.

I kind of like Collinsworth.  He never gets overly animated and he calls out questionable play calls and things of that nature without hesitation.  He also doesn't key in on every particular player that has a hint of talent.  He keys in on one or two guys on both sides of the ball for each team and shows what they do for their team.

WHY, WHY, WHY must we have to listen to that moron call our game on CBS.  It is bad enough we have to be on CBS...but he obviously HATES BALTIMORE and can't hide his feelings during a game.....AAAHAAHAHHAHAH!!!!  Thanks, Vent is over now.

I honestly have no idea where you are coming from with this. I listened to yesterday's commentary and I actually thought Dan Dierdorf was pretty complimentary towards us. He certainly did not come across as a guy who hates either Baltimore or the Ravens. I think you've got this wrong.

Sometimes he can get annoying, like when he said Jimmy Smith caught a TD pass but other than that, i don't mind him. Its the other Dan that grinds my gears. Dan as in Dan Fouts.

I actually think him and Gumbel along with Simms and Nantz are not only the best combos, but my favorite announcers to hear for Ravens/Steelers

His first name is Jimmy you know...or his middle name...I heard that too, but I didn't mind because of that.  It's not like no other announcer gets things wrong ever

Other than the fact that be didn't know the players? Jimmy or Torrey... Couldn't pronounce Ngata... And didn't even realize that's Ngata was back in the game. Actually talked about how they missed him in there, and he was on the field. His play calling was almost OK, except that I actually did feel like he had the Bengals winning, even when they were down. But yeah you have to show some sense of unbiased calling. Maybe it is his voice... But nothing annoys me more than the announcers not knowing players... That's a simple homework assignment prior to gameday.

Haloti Nagata.  Ngata's evil twin.  Dierdorf has never been able to pronounce it correctly lol.

Examples??? I love how he called out Rice for dancing when he gets the ball. I can't stand that. Pierce ran hard against the Bengals, which is why he averaged 3.9 yards as opposed to Rice's 1.7.

I watch every week at a sports bar, where we do all the commenting.

Don't mind Gruden so much, he has a lot of knowledge, and always says good things about almost every player.

Love when Billick calls a game.

The absolute worst, opinionated guy is Phil Simms.

He never says anything good about our team.

I guess we are a 2nd or 3rd tier team, we never get the network good broadcasters.

Of course, if we played a little better, perhaps we would get a little respect, as we are still the winners of the SUPER BOWL!!!

Go Ravens!

that was last season and means absolutely NOTHING now!  we are a struggling 4-5 team.  we need to turn this thing around with another win vs. the bears.

I agree.
Gruden is by far the worst.

Him and Cris Collinsworth make my ears bleed.I know Al Micheals and Mike Tirico just try to drown them out lol

hands down the worst broadcaster is mayock. everything he broadcasts during the game is based on his opinion and how he feels about it, instead of just being simply announced, just pay attention on the next thursday night game when a team is on 2nd and 10 and they make a 7 yard pass and he says(obnoxiously as hell) "i have no problem with that pass at all, make a manageable 3rd down play, i like that decision" like forreal NOBODY CARES THAT YOU LIKE IT! sorry mayock just drives me up a wall, not to mention anytime he pronounces a S or a T he sounds like hes spitting all over the broadcast booth, its SO annoying. just listen for these things next time you watch a game announced by him.

That's because he's an analyst. He's analyzing. Doing analysis. That's his job. Don't see how it's a real issue either way, but okay!

I've seen a few posts like this from Baltimore fans about Dan Dierdorf and frankly can't understand them. He seems to call the games fairly and rountinely makes nice statements about the Ravens. Sometimes I think he may even be a Ravens fan. What did he say to make you feel this way?

Dierdorf actually makes me laugh when he criticizes someone who isn't a Raven.  He said like "Another miserable day for Andy Dalton is about to come to an end" after the last interception, and I just burst out laughing.  The way he over accentuates sometimes is hilarious.

OK..so firstly..sorry to the Mods....got my first hand slap and I apologize.

Regarding Dan, I had a room full of people so maybe I did not hear him all game....but the few times he was talking it just seemed like he beat us up while praising the Bengals more...and heck, maybe I totally mis-heard it because so many on this board disagreed with me.  If I did, sorry Dan....but I still can't stand him as an analyst...maybe just a personal preference thing!

Really? I find Gruden's passion for the game enjoyable and his knowledge informative. I love it when he calls a game.

Most of it is his naisley voice.
He comes across as a bit too extreme.
Plus he seems to be a Ravens hater.

I don't mind Gruden either, but to each their own I suppose.

I was also surprised to see Phil Simms's name put up there. He seems to respect Joe Flacco a lot more than the others and I quite like the combo of him and Jim Nantz.

I can't remember their names, but that crew for our Miami game was deadset terrible. It grated me whenever I saw one of our defenders deflecting a ball to have it called a drop by a receiver. ED: Just found it in the game thread. It was Marv Albert and Rich Gannon.

I kinda see him as the new John Madden….people either love him or hate him. He seems to truly love the game and loves to see big time plays. Thats just my take on it.
