Jimmy Smith - Shutdown Corner

325 posts in this topic

It's sad that we didn't win but Jimmy has been playing lights out; I hope Ozzie can work around the cap to resign Jimmy.  However, we have history of not letting our future walk.....

Jimmy is on the edge of an island and about to step into his island pretty soon...

Jimmy had an excellent game and pretty much shut down one of the best WRs in the game.

It might just be the scheme but Jimmy has been playing a lot of left, outside CB, doesn't matter who is over there. Graham was right, outside. Webb was almost always slot.

isnt he Right side, playing in the left wideout?

Smith is our best corner right now. Give that man his due.

arguably or best defender this year. I made a thread on him about 4 weeks in and stand by it

Only guy with a semblance of consistency on defense.  Even D.Smith has disappeared in stretches of games.  The inconsistency on defense has been maddening this year for all the talent.

Jimmy is actually the right cornerback(it's from the eyes of the defender, not the quarterback) and that is where he played in college. Playing him at RCB and in press coverage is what he did best in college. He is clearly very comfortable.

Yes, you figure out which side because you think of it through the eyes of the defender, not the quarterback.

He's playing off better too.  Not saying it's great, but he's really turning into a good player.  He's really physical, guys don't want to play him.

He won us the SB with that ability....and he is really our best CB right now as mentioned above....

Yup, that's where I got mixed up. Point was that the corners have their set roles and sides. That's a scheme thing. Webb is still our most flexible guy, Jimmy may always be an outside guy.

Jimmy will be a good outside guy only, and that's fine with me. Playing in the slot is VERY difficult. A lot more confined space and quick routes. I give Webb major props for playing there, but JImmy would not have the hips for it.

Playing off coverage might be the hardest part of being a cornerback. I guess if you never play it, there will be a learning curve. I give a lot of props to him at least making that aspect of his game serviceable. He's turned the corner (no pun intended)

Absolutely agreed.

I'll sacrifice stiff hips and not being able to play in the slot for being able to shutdown the big receivers in the league any day of the week.

Again, agreed. I'd like to see Jimmy make more plays on the ball and getting some turnovers but he is almost always in great position (when he's not slipping) and has had a really good year,

I think that's coming. He does have the 10 pass deflections. I'm not sure if you've ever heard this stat, but when he played at Colorado, in his senior season, he he was targeted 20 times in man coverage and averaged only 1 reception given up per game over his final two seasons. He never had a reason to have ball skills and never had a chance to develop them. I'm really happy that he's been able to progress in that area this year.

Jimmy is having a great year. It's a shame that his year will be tainted by Calvin Johnson lol

I'd rather not acknowledge that matchup is on the schedule

I have not been a Jimmy Smith fan AT ALL, but he is starting to play more like he is capable of and I am getting excited about him.  Want to see it game after game..but he is on the way.  Webby is not nearly back to his old form, so we need Jimmy badly to step up even more now...

I remember his hip movements at the combine were extremely impressive.  I don't think it would be his hips so much as his sheer size.  It's harder for big tall guys to stop and change direction or pivot because of their size.

Webb is literally tailor made for inside play.  A lanky 180 pounds, has a short stride and loves to tackle and blitz.  It takes a more complete kind of corner to play inside and outside however and Webb can do things Smith will never be able to and vice versa.

the steelers shut them down in the second half. We better watch that game footage and do what they done.

That's what I meant. I'm not sure how else to say it other than he doesn't have the hips. I guess it would be best to say stiff hips. That's just about every tall cornerback, like you said. I won't argue that he can flip his hips and run with a player, but his hips aren't fluid enough to change direction.

Peanut Tillman has Megatrons number, and his build and play style is similar to Jimmy's. It's not impossible.

So Jimmy will be "covering" megatron? I don't know whether to just give up hope for that specific match up or to have hope that Jimmy+Webb can contain him..

With our offense, all they need is a half to put up points because we wont be able to march back.

Haha, it just isn't fair....Goodell needs to do something about that guy. If Brady can get the tuck rule, we should get a cut block to the knees rule for Megatron
