Jimmy Smith - Shutdown Corner

325 posts in this topic

I'm glad I defended him over the offseason and preseason. He is really playing lights out and it's good to see people eat some crow now and be honest enough and admit that they were wrong about him. He is still progressing so he is still getting better, still learning the game, getting more and more confident. And he doesn't even have a full season under his belt. He will be an elite corner within 1-2 years. He'll never be a ball hawk but who cares, if he covers his guy well he will not get any balls thrown his way anyway.

I'm not so sure. To this point he hasn't been, but he has good hands. There's no reason the interceptions can't start coming.

This is one of the few times I'll agree with you... if he puts in the extra hard work like he has been doing, then who's to say he can't improve his game to that level? Some CB's just can't, because they have stone hands, and everything bounces off of them even if it is right to them. Not Jimmy.

Hes scared of losing his man and giving up a huge play if he turns to look. He'd rather be right in the wrs face when the ball arrives meaning it has to be a perfect throw and great contested catch by the wideout

I think he will gain more confidence when he continues playing like he is doing right now.

Stats will be the result of his success at corner. He is used more in his natural role as a press corner where he can use his size to his advantage. he isn´t mobile enough to play ten yards off like he had to last year.

He is clearly not a shut down corner. people are way too fast judging on only a few good performances. he needs to continue to play on a high level. but one has to admit that he took the next step this year.

Just early enough considering his former first round status...

Clearly it's been tough to agree with me, because I have been down on the management.  The win against Cincinnati restored a little of my confidence.  Most of the yards we let in were during "Garbage Time".  My definition of garbage time is when a team has a good lead and plays a little soft protecting it.

It's still a very tough road, but we are 1 game ahead of my pre season projection. The defeat of the Bengals was huge. Now 5-2 should get us in the playoffs. We have to play the Bengals in their house and the Patriots in ours.  But the good news is 4 of our last 7 games are at home. Our road games are Chicago, Detroit and Cincinnati.

This Chicago game is key. They are down Cutler and Tillman, who is a troublesome corner. Their defensive line is in shambles.  But their backup QB has played very well. They have a receiver tandem that is pure trouble.  We must win this game to have a viable shot.

Jimmy Smith (and Ladarius Webb) on Megatron. If the Ravens are still in the playoff hunt by then this will be a crucal matchup.

I was never all that passionate about the whole Jimmy Smith issue in past years. I think that while it would be nice for a late first round pick to immediately have a huge role on the team, I don't think it's realistic. I figured he would get better with time. He played like hot garbage last year, but I think he has matured enormously. Between him, Elam and Upshaw, this defense will be great to watch develop.

Not convinced, just like Flacco, he has to show consistency before he gets my approval. And after his temper tantrum on the best player in the game on Sunday, he's still got some maturing to do.

He's getting better each week and will get even better. I never had any doubts he would have a bright future. Its too early to say he's a shutdown corner but once he starts reading the QBs eyes and jumping some routes as well as learning to play some bump and run, he can be a beast.

As far as his outburst on the sidelines after the Hail Mary is concerned, chalk it up to youthful enthusiasm. It shows he cares. He had every right to be upset but he should not have vented at Ihedigbo. James knew it was a bonehead play.

We have one more year left on his rookie contract next year right?

yea him and torrey will be priorities of summer 15. I'm assuming something will be done with Suggs this summer because of his extortionate cap number next year

I think they have to extend Suggs.  We can't lose him, but we can't keep him at that cap number either.  But yeah, Torrey and Jimmy are the priorities in 2015.  Those are the only 2 I'm really concerned about at this point.

Maturing?  How do you not get on the veteran for doing something stupid that put the game on the line and some would say the season?  If he sat there and did nothing I'd be more worried than him letting Ihedigbo know that can't happen.

I agree.  Webb should be sitting on Smith's shoulders for this game in order to cover Megatron.

Not shutdown yet, just real good.  However, as long as the pass rush is destroying QBs, that's as good as shutdown.

Agreed, not a shutdown corner yet, but this is his best year and finally playing like a first-round pick.

Still playing very well.  The only noticeable catches he gave up were because he slipped.  He frustrated Marshall to no end on that one drive.

He saved a TD on multiple occasions near the goaline. he does look like a 1st rd pick to me. thats of course when he is used properly.

With the way that he's been playing this season and from the fire that he showed after the Bengals Hail Mary, anyone think that he could emerge as a new leader on our team?

I only remember him giving up 1 play, which was the unbelievable catch by marshall.  he was suffocating receivers the entire game.  he is better than webb this year, and is, by far, our best corner.

I've always like Jimmy from day 1.  I knew that if this kid could just stay healthy he would grow into a beast of a CB.  he's slowly getting there.

now if he could just stay injury free, we are all set for the future

Hope we'll be able to resign him. A lot of contracts expire soon and as of now, my priorities would be Torrey,Pitta,Jimmy,Jones in that order. Going off the assumption Monroe gets resigned.

If Jimmy continues to play the way he is I think it could be hard. It's always been a matter of him staying healthy and getting more experience. I'm really happy he's playing up to his 1st round status. I'll never forget that Tom Brady INT in NE.

Jimmy had an excellent game and pretty much shut down one of the best WRs in the game.

It might just be the scheme but Jimmy has been playing a lot of left, outside CB, doesn't matter who is over there. Graham was right, outside. Webb was almost always slot.

That was the greatest pick I've ever seen. I remember feeling like we had just gotten some divine intervention.
