Jimmy Smith - Shutdown Corner

325 posts in this topic

Maybe next year we can get a FA like sam shields, vontae davis or DRC and we will have the best trio of corners in the league. Smith webb and shields or one of the other two.

That'd be awesome, but it's financially just not going to happen.

Still fun to think about, but we do need to find another corner.  Don't feel great about riding with Chykie Brown.

PFF gave him a -0.3. I lol'd, remered it was PFF, then lol'd again.

Can't even say the word but that is just downright insane.  He knocked CJ out of bounds twice, 2 passes defended.  His only catches in man coverage on Smith that I can remember is the slant for 8 and the bubble screen for 0 yards.

I saw Jimmy Smith alot in college. Great kid. Graduated. Enormous talent. So happy he fell to us to offeild concerns, but top 10 talent. He is finally healthy and experienced. With him and Webb they have one of the best tandoms in the NFL. Webb will be better next year 2 years after surgury. Great draft pick. Ravens usually dont miss on defensive first picks. Next year i expect them to move Elam to SS his real position.

Loving his play right now.  He's really reaching for that shutdown moniker.  He'll get there soon enough, I think.

I think we'll find someone in the third or fourth round, or get someone like Chris Carr(though not Carr himself) because we have to take care of our own FAs first, and anyone left will be cheap.

I've seen enough of Chris Carr. Don't really want at this point.

Something like that.  Or Corey Graham.  I don't think anyone expected Corey to contribute like he has.   He's had his struggles, but he plays well above his pay grade.

I definitely wouldn't mind bringing back Graham, he had a rough start to the year but has been very consistent for most of the season.

You need guys like Corey Graham to win games.  he can fill in a bunch of spots.  He won't shut anyone down, but can play ball.  Chykie's really disappointed me.  Hopefully he'll turn it around.

And I doubt he'll want much money.  Maybe 2 years, $4M or so.  I'd take him back.

Webb will be 100 next year, Jimmy has arrived and Asa will be the next to step up. I've been right about Jimmy and Webb from the start, hope I am with Asa too. Don't know why, just have a feeling he can be real good for us.

I hope Webb returns to form, then there will be nowhere to throw.

I like Asa too.  Honestly I'd like another 6'0 corner, but that may be wishful thinking.

Yeah he's not a must-have, but if he comes that cheap, why not?  He's a serviceable CB and he plays a lot of different roles.  Who would have ever thought, since he was brought in as a pure ST guy.

I would too. Was thinking maybe trying to get Browner for cheap next year. Secondary would be CRAZY. Browner and Jimmy on the outside with Webb in the slot. Also wouldn't mind DRC for the right price. I see us maybe going corner in the 3-5 rounds next year.

Browner is suspended all next season.

EDIT: I'm fairly sure, it's indefinite.  If his performance enhancing issues are that severe, he probably isn't the player we think.

Browner is suspended indefinitely.  There's a lot of speculation that his career is over.  If he comes back, people are saying the earliest will be 2015.

If you're looking for an under the radar cornerback for next season then you have to like Walter Thurmond. He's better than Browner, but still the nickel corner for Seattle.

Is it just me or does Jimmy seem a lot more like able in his press conferences/interviews this year?

Just comes off to me as more comfortable, talkative and confident then in years past. Proud of what he's become for us.

That happens when he plays well.

Do you think he shadows AJ Green

No.....

I think he limits him though

Not shutdown.  I mean like he did with Megatron, where he plays him every snap.

He didn't play Megatron every snap.  That's why Megatron had some yards in that game.  Jimmy held him to 3 for 35 if memory serves.

But as to him shadowing AJ Green, he should, but he probably won't.

That great and leads me to what I actually came in this threat to talk about.

I've never really cared for PFF one way or another. I was taught how to watch film when I was 11 years old so I usually just go off what I see and take others opinions for what they are worth. However now I gotta question their grading system because they gave Jimmy Smith a failing grade from the Lions game. I don't have a link to the site but I got this from the LFW on the front page.

As this tweet showed Jimmy matched up on Calvin 77% of the time and didn't get beat one single time. The only catch I remember Calvin having in tight man coverage was like a 4yd pass. You can't be serious downgrading Jimmy in any way in this game. Even when in zone coverage, Jimmy made some strong tackles that took away the catch and run part of the game that Calvin is so good at. I just don't know what they are thinking.

I hope that this will make people realize what a joke PFF is and stop referencing them as if it means something.

their stats are without a doubt better than anyone elses. Don't like the grading though
