Scheme. Both our offensive and defensive schemes are completely broken. We are getting out coached every week and teams superior schemes are a big part of it. The scheme issues are a big reason we can't run the ball and why we can't generate turnovers on defense. We have a blocking scheme that doesn't generate running lanes and a coverage scheme that allows QB's to pick our secondary apart because there is no pass rush due to us playing super soft coverage all the time. The few times we dialed up the blitz we had success getting to Campbell and at least forced him to make a quick throw (which is how you generate int's). When the QB has all day to scan for open wr's the chances he's going to throw into traffic are extremely low and even if you make a coverage stop you still aren't going to force any turnovers.
Pees is a push over and the fact that we didn't completely scrap Cam Cameron's playbook in the offseason has come back to bite us more times then I can count this season. The problems have to do with coaching/scheme almost more so then then players not executing, I think a lot of players are doing their best to execute, the scheme they are executing just sucks.
I think scheme is a major issue. On a direct comparison, I don't think the Jets defense has more talent than we do, but Rex is such a good coach schematically that he makes his players better than they are. They are just as weak at safety and in the secondary as we are, but they know how to scheme around that. This is an area that Harbaugh is weak in, and we've seen his loyalty be a hindrance to getting the right people in place before. I still think it was Bisciotti's call to fire Cam last season, not Harbs. Regardless, you brought up a good point.
But it's not the only issue. We lack talent in the secondary, specifically we don't have a true FS, and I don't like our corners much with Webb playing like crap. We drafted Jimmy Smith to be a press man corner, but it seems we never allow him to do that. Graham is always a step late. And that's ignoring the dearth of talent along the OL. Oher is the same sieve he's always been, getting beat by speed guys around the outside. There is so much film of the exact same thing that I saw happen today of him just failing over and over again. That's ignoring Gino's ineptitude, Shipley's suckage, and Yanda's injury. Not looking forward to their grades tomorrow.
This team is a failure from top to bottom. When you suck this bad it's not just one area that's wrong. I've tried to remain calm coming off a Super Bowl season, but when you have to watch that every week, and really it's been just as bad every week this season, it's just rough.
