RB Beanie Wells tears achilies trying out for us, we sign RB Bernard Scott instead

117 posts in this topic

btw Scott has a bad knee.......dont know why we like trading or drafting injured RBs, could of kept AA or Rainey ..........

I'm going to trust our SB winning FO on this one. Reports said that Scott is fully recovered from his knee injury and was quite impressive in his workout.

Really? You think so? I'm pretty sure it's Flacco's fault.

With the money they pay him they couldn't afford Wells' surgery.

Scott is/was a much better back than Wells ever was. He's also better than the guys we used to have like Allen and Berry.

I was personally hoping for Cedric Benson. Hope he's able to help the team out

I always liked Scott, more of a 3rd down back but can also help out on returns... Too bad for Bennie, he's been injured for most of his career.

Hmmm...how is Scott in pass protection?

He's a very good runner and receiver out of the backfield (I mentioned earlier he brrings back memories of Chester Taylor), and Cincy used him as a third down back, so they weren't too down on his pass pro either.

Lol at the Flacco bit...don't you know the new trend is to bash Harbaugh?

Yeah, Scott is very talented, injuries are the only reason he was available in the first place

I also wonder if this means that the coaches for some reason believe the backs, not the OL is responsible for the disaster we call a run game

The coaches, and the GFOs are responsible, not the backs.

If the Ravens signed my Mom to play running back, would you blame her ?

Rainey was a play maker, really could use him right about now.....& cheaper.

Such a playmaker that the Browns signed Willis McGahee out of retirement to start for them?

Rainey made plays against 3rd string guys in preseason.  Leave it at that.  He couldn't hack it for the Browns after they traded Richardson.

truth is we will never now why they let him go but with 2 hurt RBs ( Ray,Bernard ) he could've help with the load until someone get health.

btw Mcgahee was with Denver but got cut....

When no one wants you all off season and 5 games into the season you're essentially retired.

Finally, speed at the RB position. Doubt we use him properly thou...

We still won't see any types of outside screens and such.

I hope Scott pans out. A little competition could bring out the best in others.

 I agree. Bernard is a threat to both Rice and Pierce, but in different ways.

The only thing I blame your mother for is drinking while she was carrying you

We needed a short yardage back, 220+ lbs, so we wouldn't consistently get stopped on 3rd and 1 because a DT can stop Rice or Pierce's momentum with one hand while getting blocked in short yardage situations.

CEDRIC BENSON. The answer was Cedric Benson. He probably won't ever pick up more then 3 yards, but he will always get at least 1. Which is the 1 yard we've struggled to get on a regular basis even during the SB run. There's absolutely nothing special at all about Benson at this stage in his career, but he's 220 lbs + he has a unique build different from Rice/Pierce which makes him a missing link in the rotation to convert short yardage/GL opportunities on a consistent basis. Leach isn't a natural ball carrier and isn't a reliable option in the running game in short yardage/GL if your furiously typing about how Vonta Leach is a 220+ lbs back right now.

Rice = Work Horse/Passing Game

Pierce = Change of Pace/Slasher

Benson = Short Yardage/GL

Instead we have

Bernard Scott =  Change of Pace/Passing Game, 195 lbs, lightest back in the rotation

It goes to say, i don't like this signing at all. Brings nothing new to the rotation, still missing short yardage/GL back.

Why do we have a fullback? Isn't that one part of Leach's purpose?

Let me fix it for you:

What we now have now and the way it should be, but I have zero confidence that we will implement:

Pierce = Work Horse/Passing Game/Short Yardage

Rice = Slasher/Passing Game Dump-offs and Screens/Open-Mid-field Short Yardage Situtions

Scott = Change of Pace/Open-Mid Field/Spread/Screens/Zone Formation Attack, SPEED

Leach = short Yardage Run and Passing dump-offs, Goal-line

What we did have and/or how they were used:

Pierce = Slasher/Change of Pace, NO SPEED

Rice = Workhorse, NO SPEED

Leach = Short Yardage Run and Passing dump-offs, Goal-line, NO SPEED

Vonta isn't reliable at all in short yardage or the goal line. He's a tertiary option, not a primary ball carrier in those situations. Maybe you forgot he got stuffed against Pitt on 3rd and 1 just last week with minimal penetration from the DL, get real leach is never going to be a consistent option carrying the ball in those situations and he was never supposed to. Vonta is here to block for Ray/Pierce and be a checkdown in the passing game if need be. Why would we line up in the I-formation and use a FB as a primary short yardage back? The point of him being on the field is to lead block and make a path for our RB to get that 1st down. Consistently giving the ball to a FB will get honed in on in a heart beat by defenses. You might as well only have 10 players on the field every 3rd and short if that's the answer because the RB is just standing there. If we line Vonta up at HB on 3rd and short who's his lead block? Juice? It's a horrible idea.

And Pierce is fast what are you talking about? We haven't even seen him at full stride this season thanks to the OL. Not to mention both him and Rice have been banged up with lower body injuries and the OL has been utter garbage for a majority of the season. They haven't had running lanes, not a matter of speed. Go tell Usain Bolt to try to run through a log jam of 300+ lb men. Rice has had the hip which affected his speed and lateral movement, not that he's blazing fast or anything but he's quicker and more agile then he's shown thus far. Short yardage/GL back was the signing to go for at RB, how long do we have to suffer through not being able to convert a 3rd and 1 or punch the ball in on the GL?

I know that players take the risk when they try-out and all. Sign waivers etc. Still, this just feels so wrong to me.

"oh sorry you got hurt trying to make our team. Better luck next year! Send Scott in okay? "

I agree. In the big scheme of things how costly would it be to help the guy out?

Unless his agent is a complete idiot, Wells has insurance that covers a tryout injury.

Very true.

Of course, not ruling out that an agent can be a complete idiot either!
