Who are the Top Sixteen Coaches in the NFL?

55 posts in this topic

A lot of discussion has taken place on this blog re the Elite QBs in the league and whether our QB is elite or not. Is there a list of elite, or say, Top five coaches? IMO, the top sixteen coaches in the league are listed below but they are in no certain order.
They are:

Bill Belichek
Sean Peyton
Mike McCarthy
Andy Reid
Tom Coughlin
Pete Carroll
Jim Harbaugh
Marvin Lewis
Mike Shanahan
Mike Tomlin
Chuck Pagano
Rex Ryan
Bruce Ariens
Jeff Fisher
Jason Garrett
Marc Trestman

I would be interested in knowing how your list compares and if you think our head coach belongs on the list please rank him.

I'll participate before this gets moved. No particular order after the first 2.... Belicheck and Payton....

John Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh
Andy Reid
Jeff Fisher
Mike McCarthy
Chug Pagano

John Harbs is definitely top 5 IMO. Even if I wasn't Ravens fan I would think that.

You even put JASON GARRETT on that list. That's funny.

Hilarious. He would be 3 years removed if he was hired back in 08 over Harbs

The real question is, which of those top coaches have a high football IQ?

This game is as much mental as it is physical. My criteria would be how well do they do in a chess match game? We often refer to this one or that one got outcoached. The mark of a top HC is what or how much they can get out of the players they have been handed. Many have won superbowls simply by inheriting a talented bunch of players.

Most good head coaches can plan several plays ahead, "if they do this, we will counter with that, etc"

I was warned to stop calling people trolls, so I won't call this an obvious trolling attempt

I didn't think anyone thought John Harbaugh was an elite coach.

Welp, back to the old drawin' board. Most people around here realize he is great, and appreciate making the playoffs every year...very different from the Billick days.

This board really never surprised to amaze me on a daily basis... John Harbaugh is clearly one of the best coaches in the NFL. And then we have a Supposedly Raven fan here who doesn't think so lmao. Marc Trestman seriously?

Take Jason Garrett off and add our man Harbaugh, the order can be debated all day.

1)Sean Peyton

2)Bill Belichek

3)Jim Harbaugh

4)Tom Coughlin

5)Pete Carroll

6)Rex Ryan

7)John Harbaugh

8)Mike Tomlin

9)Andy Reid

10)Mike McCarthy

11)Marvin Lewis

12)Mike Shanahan
13)Chuck Pagano
14)Jeff Fisher
15)Marc Trestman

16)Bruce Ariens

Torn between Payton and Belichek. Belichek would be the clear #1 if his ego didn't get in the way.

John Harbaugh will move up as he learns. But he will always be handcapped until he not at the mercy of his coordinators. He needs go to X's and O's school, 2013 style. Learning under a new, innovative OC would give a boost to him. John and the Ravens organization has learned together. The ship will be straightened. This year it may be too late.

I think Couglin is getting up there in age and effectiveness, but I will not take anything away from him now. He has won big with Mr. Inconsistent, Eli. He assembles balanced teams.

I think Rex Ryan will ascend up the ranks more and more. He has tempered his fire. His defensive mind is amazing, he knows how to win with nothing. He is now hampered by his organization. He was hampered by his own self-aggrandizing, but no more.

Marc Trestman is a winner. Smart man.

I put Reid and McCarthy lower because they can't solve their roster inbalances, regardless of how good of offensive minds they are. They should have won more from playing in weak divisions over the years. This is why Reid is rolling right now with a full cupboard in KC. He could never assemble a killer, balanced squad on his own. Besides, Reid's clock management is awful.

Shanahan could be lower, but the man can adjust an offensive style to fit personnel. His weakness is that he assembles soft squads, then asks them to do more than they are capable of. A'int won squat without John the Great.

Jim Harbaugh sucessfully learned how to combine his fire, knowledge, and eye as a player and progeny of a X and O coach to become an excellent, excellent winner and talent evaluator.

John should not be up there until he wins with out the HOF D we had & With this horrible Offence he has created.....

Like last year?

Opinions are opinions. I'm not going to get riled up about it. Misinformation, on the other hand...

Won the superbowl with a very average defense... featured by two old guys with handicap stickers on their cars... c'mon we had the slowest defense in the league last year. Who wins a Superbowl like that? Could have arguably done it the year before as well.

It's a comment like your's that makes me wonder what if the Ravens had a team that consisted of last postseason's offense and special teams with the '06 defense. I mean, really; what if...

Up and coming. Future star coach. Urban meyer. You want to talk about getting the most out if players as well as being a brilliant mind. This is the guy. I continue to be of the opinion the ravens should pay him head coach money to be an o coordinator. I believe that is the trend we will see over the next ten years. Let's be ahead of the curve. There is no coaching salary cap.
