Offensive and Defensive Coordinators that may be available next year?

57 posts in this topic

I get what you're saying here but I don't think it's entirely relevant as there have been those who have been against bringing back Pees or Caldwell for various reasons as the coordinator. I'm not really against either but I did want Hue Jackson in the off-season and was bummed when he didn't even get a look from the way things sounded.

I like Caldwell but he hasn't yet proven to be an effective coordinator. Not sure if his recent struggles are related to conflicting schemes. I know some are related to player execution but some weight does fall on him too.

Not gonna lie, I wanted Jackson too.

I love Caldwell, and I think he looks bad right now because he is handcuffed by the line.

We won a freaking SB with Caldwell as our OC. He isn't the problem. Castillo, on the other hand...I wouldn't exactly say he is part of the solution.

Well... we won a SB with McKinnie at LT and Cody at NT...

Big Mac essentially said this when he started his new gig in Miami.

He said something about Castillo or Caldwell?

Specifically, did he criticize Castillo?

Yep, because McKinnie played like a beast. Which brings us full circle to players executing, not Caldwell sucking.
Now Castillo as here, and everything is jacked up.

Castillo is to blame - from how I interpret it.

Yeah, most likely Caldwell has struggled some due to Castillo. I think it's fair to say but at the same time I don't think Caldwell is that great of a coordinator. I don't see him helping guys get open. Granted it's on the players to get open but you can scheme guys open and that's where some blame can be thrown his way.

I ultimately think Caldwell is an efficient coordinator but not a creative one. He seems more of a technician. I would like to see more creativity and I'm not sure he's got the mind for it. He's not bad but we can get better. He's one I'm complacent with but I'm not yet satisfied.

while i do not disagree with what you're saying, i believe Caldwell is most suited for us at the moment - we need an efficient coordinator now more than ever as we're missing some pieces of the big puzzle to start getting creative (a tru TE and a veritable and proven WR2)

having two people running things up front is what's not helping us at the moment - I would cut Castillo lose and go for glory with the management set-up we had for last year's SB run; I'm pretty confident Caldwell won't get a HC job any time soon, so we'll need to know if he'll be our answer at OC or not moving forward

Oh no I agree and I'm not saying we should fire Caldwell. I want him here at least as a QB coach. I am against any changes at coordinator this year. Regardless of who we bring here it'll be tough to install any offense with no off-season. No, I'm referring to next year.

The thing is I'd like a coordinator who can scheme around players but those are tough to find.

Quick fix would be switching back Andy Moeller....

I felt that 1/3 of the problem was Castillo, and 2/3 the players, but reading that and really thinking on it, I'd shift more of it to Castillo. I mean, the guys have stunk up the place individually and collectively, but maybe I underestimated how bad Castillo really is...and I never liked him in the first place.

There's only so much players can do when put in a bad situation.  I understand that players play and have to execute, but for me it's always been a 50/50 thing.  A player can only do so much with horse crap coaching, unless we're talking the Barry Sanders/ Peyton Mannings/ Ray Lewis/ Randy Moss' of the world who can just show up and destroy teams, 98% of players need to be put in the right situation by good coaching.  On the flip side, a good coach can only put a guy in the right spot per his talents, then its up to the player.

I was a baseball guy so I'll use a baseball analogy, the Tiger's should be in the World Series this year but Jim Leyland mishandled their starting pitching in a criminal way and put way too much faith in his bullpen.  First sign of trouble past the 6th inning and his starters were done.

What's really troubling is I thought Castillo was a really good hire lol....how embarrassing.

Nah, not embarrassing at all. Obviously our FO thought he was a good hire as well.

While I am not one who is blaming our coordinators for the current sub par performances. If we do make a move I would like us to set a new trend which I believe we will begin to see soon. Pay an offensive coordinator head coach money. Bring in one of the most brilliant offensive minds who is also a fantastic motivator before another team offers him their head coaching gig. Urban Meyer is my choice. There is no salary cap for coaches. This is where we can gain an edge over the rest of the league. I believe the patriots will be making a similar move this off season.

As for the defense. I loved paganos aggressive and creative schemes. But peas has been able to overcome a monumentally devastated unit last year. And is putting together a whole new unit this year. He needs a chance to prove what he can do.

At this point, I'd back anyone who was not a personal close friend of Harbs, lol.  I think we've been down this road enough now to know better.

My votes are for either Greg Schiano or Lovie Smith for DC

I'd stay as far away from Schiano as possible. He has got defenses to perform fairly well, but he seems to be a locker room cancer.

Maybe he'd change if he was just a coordinator instead of a head coach, but I just can't trust him.

Lol. I can't imagine John Harbaugh and Schiano in the same room let alone team. That sounds disastrous.

Lol....stick-up-his-butt disciplinarian and a devious drama queen...would be entertaining to say the least.
