Matt Birk has lost 75 lbs since retirement

I guess we can't call him up with our need at center. He's WAYYYYY below playing weight now!

All joking aside, congrats to Birk for staying on top of his health. It's tragic to watch so many retired players go drastically the other way on the spectrum and die young with weight-related health issues.

he looks fantastic he had to lose over ten pounds a month to hit 75 in this short span of time. I too would like to know how he accomplished that .

He probably just stopped eating the insane amount of calories he had to intake to maintain his playing weight.

Weight loss is simple: calories in vs. calories out.

Linemen usually lose weight.
Skill guys end up getting fat.

The workout regime alone during the football season would make linemen fit....they have to eat a certain amount of calories to be fast-fat guys. Marcellus Wiley on sports nation said he ate a whole pizza and drank milk at night to keep on weight. More weight behind an arm gives you more power even if its fat...if athleticism is equal. hence a regular 300lbs dude in the street would get crushed in the NFL cause muscle is needed under the fat.

That's only half true. I've watch plenty of stories about defensive lineman who were 300 lbs and up during their playing days and then would balloon up to 500 or even 600 lbs post career. In those cases they  kept eating as if they were playing but the physical exertion was removed. Those are the tragic stories of middle aged men dropping dead of heart attacks and strokes.

maybe not center, but he could probably take elams place now instead.

Or he could take over at TE or WR. I was checking his FB, he gives a lot of tips on how he was able to lose weight.

When he did not want to go to the White house with his teammates, my opinion of him change. He is not at all like my brilliant Harvard-educated college professor.

Do you know why he didn't go?  I think he should be respected for standing up for his beliefs. I'm sure he wasn't happy about not joining his team mates.

Who cares? He didn't want to go, because of his political beliefs. He took a stand for what he believes in and he did in a fairly civil and low key manner. He didn't stir up a ton of drama or embarrassed his team mates by going on the TV with this.

If I were him, I probably would've prefered to tell the president my opinion face to face (I mean, when do you ever get the chance to do that?), but as far as things go, that an athlete can do that is questionable from torturing animals, gambling on football games he actually plays in, drugs, alkohol and loose women, I don't think having a different political opinion is all that bad (unless you're Riley Cooper and bust out the N-word, eventhough that might have been just plain stupidity).

Reason only makes sense to those with humility.

Alright fellas, let's turn this back to Birk before the mods close it down.

Way to go Birk. I hear a lot about former athletes who put on serious weight and have health concerns after retiring, but he's obviously done well for himself.
