Run Defense Issues?

25 posts in this topic

We gave up 100 yards again this past game.

This week we play a run heavy Steelers team. My question is, what do we do about Bell? He's got talent.

Personally, I think we need to work on the run D a LOT. Whether that means playing Brown more... IDK, but I think it is an area of concern

Im not too worried about our Defense.   If you think about it, aside from that 1st quarter where Eddie got his 80+ yards, the defense made the adjustments to keep him @ bay for rest of the quarter.

If you were to tell me that Ravens D gave up 19 points to packers last week i would've taken that any time of day.   Our offense however could've done a lot better than 17 points.   Against a PACKERS D....come on now.

Nah. The total d is fine.

The run d I'm a bit worried about. We have AP on the schedule and other good RBs.

If you can't stop the run you're not going to win too many games

agree.   lets hope that was just a bad fluke.   but credit to where credit is due, packers figured out a way to run the ball this season.

Yes, the defense makes adjustments almost as soon as the weakness is spotted. Too bad the offense can't do the same.

Not to make a thread about the offense or anything, but if you can't run the ball well either you won't win games either.

The NFL is mainly a passing league but run game still very important. Run sets up the pass. Not much anyone could do.

If you ask me. Ravens need to get Brown playing A LOT more, and play Upshaw more.

Then they need interior oline to fix the run game.

They have major needs next season IMO.

Not really concerned. Lacy had a couple big runs, but for the most part he was held in check.

Steelers rushing attack is poor.

That whole offense is worse than ours. They have weapons in the passing game and aren't producing.

Bell has serious talent though. I wouldn't sleep on him

Eh. It's debatable but I think he's got a high ceiling.

I think his ceiling is pretty average tbh. He will never be a dynamic player, but he runs hard and has some burst. He made a living in college of getting outside the box and running over DBs. That's not going to work the same in the NFL.

He's going to be a workhorse that'll play at a starting caliber level for 5 years.

That's what I think. Not a superstar but a very good player at most

Only quoting you because of Run Heavy Steelers part. This isn't the Steelers of old, now that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous or anything but they aren't run heavy and right now their running woes are deeper than ours. The Steelers are 31st in rushing yards per game at 61.0 ypg. And 29th in Rushing Attempts per game with 19.8 attempts rushing per game.

Now there is something about this game that brings out the grittiness in both teams so perhaps one or both teams may snap out of their rushing problems. I'm hoping we snap out and our D shuts them down to continue their issues.

Would us playing in the same 4-3 scheme we did last week except let's start McPhee and Canty at DE and let Williams and Jones play DT while we have Suggs and Dumervil stay on the edges and while we rotate Smith and Brown at MLB since Ngata and Bynes are struggling

This, this, and this. Brown needs to be starting next to Daryl Smith not Bynes. No idea what they're waiting for, I mean, Bynes hasn't been bad but he just doesn't deserve to be starting over Brown. It reminds me of the situation from last year with Ellerbe and McClain. We might not have gone as far as we did if McClain hadn't have gotten injured since Ellerbe would've never gotten in the starting lineup otherwise.

The run defense, currently ranked 7th in the league, hasn't been that bad though. We've only given up one TD on the ground all season, which was against Buffalo, and before Eddie Lacy's 37 yd run last week the longest run we had given up was 18 yards which was the best in the league. The front seven has been playing great and will only get better once we get completely healthy, as Cody and Spears have been out the past couple of weeks, and once Arthur Brown is starting.

Oh, man! It was embarrassing when the Packers took advantage of Josh Bynes committing the same, exact mistake like 3-or-4 times in that game. Whenever Eddie Lacy had a big gain (like during the opening drive or the game-sealing drive), it was mostly due to Bynes creeping-up to the line of scrimmage and leaving a huge hole on the left side for Lacy to go at.

I want to think Bynes is still "improving", as evident by a well-rounded effort in Miami; but, I'm not the biggest support of his. I still think he's only in the starting line-up because Harbaugh wants rookies to work for that starting position and Bynes just did enough to maintain his starting status. However, a Daryl Smith/Arthur Brown, one-two punch at middle linebacker will be a force out there on the gridiron.

That Bills game was horrible as well.

I still like to think that was because the Bills ran the football almost 60 times against the Ravens, since Buffalo couldn't rely on E.J. Manuel to beat Baltimore with his arm. Plus, their longest run was only a 16-yard pick-up by Fred Jackson; so, it wasn't like the Bills were destroying the Ravens on the ground.

I'm bringing this thread up. If there is anything I'm concerned about its the run d

Two words: Cody & Ngata. One's injured and another one is playing below average.

Yep.

And if you can't stop the run. You're going to get gassed and can't win games. THATS why we lost
