Anyone worried about DT Haloti Ngata?

193 posts in this topic

This.I like Haloti, but he is getting paid Wilfork type money. And I don't think Wilfork is seeing that much.

Wilfork wasn't really the big contract.

People forget that Haynesworth signed a 100 million dollar contract and Suh signed basically the same contract as Ngata.  Ngata at the time was the best defensive tackle, and then his body just failed him.

It's unfortunate, but the contract seemed fair when we signed him too it.  Contracts are like draft picks, you don't know how healthy he's going to be.  Ngata is also playing CONSIDERABLY better than he was last year.

ithink we should rest him in the next game with the bye week coming up. i think pur d line will be too much for tnis steelers front.

He;ll play limited snaps.  He's in a pretty heavy rotation anyway, which is why he's seemed to disappear.  We're rotating alot.

But right now our best DLineman is Arthur Jones, from what I've seen.

I agree with everything except the statement that his body has failed him.  I know he has his nicks and bruises and everything, but I think some of that is a direct result of a lack of effort.  I love Ngata, but the knock on him has always been that he's somewhat lazy.  He's come in overweight multiple times.  The only reason he dropped to us in the draft, even though it wasn't that far, is because he was known for taking plays off.  I don't think he's really been in the best condition to avoid those injuries.

If you go back and watch some highlights.  Look at his burst, and the pushy off he used to get.  Not to be too hard on the guy, remember he was gimpy going into OTAs which limited the cardio he could do.  Last season i think it was lazy, this season I think it's more his body starting to wear.  Hopefully he'll round into form if it is conditioning, as he gets into shape.

Don't get me wrong, I know not everything is his fault.  I do think some of the blame for his injuries has to be cast on his lack of conditioning though.  I remember reading somewhere that he doesn't workout in the offseason.  I think he played exceptionally in his prime, but as he's aging, some of those draft concerns are starting to pop up.

And just regarding this season, I can agree to an extent.  I don't think he's played well by any means, but he hasn't played terribly either.  I'm sure other teams would take his production on their team.  The issue, like Rice, is value.  Is his play on the field worth what we're paying him?  At this point, absolutely not.

The Baltimore Ravens should not hold on to under-performing players due to memories or whatever. Get it together Ngata.

I wouldn't argue against that.  But I think not taking care of himself last offseason really hurt him.  He got injured, then got injured and couldn't work out the most recent offseason either.  He'll be on the team next year regardless, hopefully he can get his mojo back.

Really we wouldn't be complaining about any of this if we could just run the damn ball.

hes only 29. trevor pryce was a beast until his injury at 33. look at justin smith. corey redding was at his best during that age. infact ngata should be at his peak now. clearly he was either a rpoduct of pryce and redding and was never as good as we all thought he was or he has no awareness on how to be an athelte and take care of yourself. either way its bad.

Yeah without a doubt lol.  I still think it's better having Ngata than not having Ngata.  The issue comes when we need to re-sign guys or test the free agent market and we don't have the money because of a contract like his.  If he can get back to full strength and take care of himself, I have no problem with the contract.

My biggest knock on Haloti Ngata is I just don't think he loves football. I just don't.

I've been saying this for years.  I really think he plays because he's good at it.  I've never seen the love or passion out of him.

We're going to lose guys, for sure.  Namely Arthur Jones.  Hopefully we can resign Monroe.  He's my priority right now.

Yeah and that's what worries me.  Arthur Jones has been the epitome of a hard worker.  He's truly worked to get where he is, and he takes pride in his job.  I really don't want to lose him, but some of these big contracts are most likely going to force him out.

Yep. I think he plays because it pays. I strongly believe it and there's nothing that's convinced me otherwise.

I absolutely don't want to lose Arthur Jones. I think he's a key piece of this team going forward and I would extend him and trade Ngata even if it only saves a million next year because we can always pad Jones' 2015 salary. I would hate to lose Arthur.

A lot of players I don't want to lose - Jones, D. Smith, Pitta, Monroe. It's going to be hard with contracts like Ngata's. Hopefully we can find a way to extend Suggs and lower that number next year.

Torrey and Jimmy Smith, McPhee, Chykie Brown, Josh Bynes. Those guys are all free agents in 2015.

I expect McPhee, Brown and possibly Bynes to be gone. It depends. I love Daryl Smith like the best guy but I could see us let him walk in free agency. It depends on our comfort level in Bynes and Brown.

Regardless, we'll need to make some serious decisions next year with this roster. I think Suggs just be extended. I believe Torrey and Jimmy are both high priority players. I see Pitta as a top priority. Monroe is a top priority but I'm not sure how much he'll get. I really think we'll sign him cheaper than expected.

I just can't stand the thought of losing Arthur Jones.

Yeah it's those 4 I mentioned above for this year. I'd take 3 of the 4 and be happy. I wouldn't be surprised if we re-sign Ihedigbo either.

Next offseason, Torrey and Jimmy are the clear priorities. At this point, I don't see anyone else that wouldn't be re-signed if we really wanted them.

This.. He has the competitiveness and that desire to win but overalls its not a football desire.. Just that he's incredibly gifted and can make a ton of money

I definitely don't see the Sizzle/Watt style desire in him at all

Everyone should be worried he is not as dominate as years past and seems to be hurt every year.  I love Haloti but it is clear that he is not himself out there.

I think the coaching staff knows it as well.  Brandon Williams will fill his shoes nicely though.  If we could divide his money and keep him and Arthur on board i don't think we lose a thing as far as production.

If they resign Bynes to be a starter I'll begin to question whether Ozzie's vision is failing him.  Brown and Bynes are the first guys I let go on that list with literally zero hesitation.  Even if it doesn't mean signing Jones or McPhee.

Losing Jones will sting, we need to do everything possible to resign him.

We don't at all.  Jones has been a force since 1/3 of the way into last year.  How Ngata used to be.

It's rare to get that type of interior pass rush as well. Jones has easily become one of my favorites. I just really hope these big contracts don't keep us from signing him.

we have the depth at D-line to rest up Ngata to heal his injuries, B. williams, spears, canty , jones, tyson.

I've been pretty disappointed in Yanda's play this year as well.

He is nowhere near as dominate as he's been in passed seasons and he is good for at least one hands to the face penalty per game thus far.

I don't buy the "his body failed him" crap... He looks lathargic , disinterested and even his arms are sloppy compared to the old Ngata. I feel like he'd be fine quitting football and neve looking back...
