Anyone worried about DT Haloti Ngata?

193 posts in this topic

I scoffed at the idea of trading him, and I still don't exactly have it on the table, but I'm worried about his lack of production.  He isn't a defensive end like JJ Watt who is constantly disrupting plays.  He is a space eater who commands double teams to help out our rushers and coverage linebackers.

Unfortunately, this seems like another year where he is injury plagued.  He is making very little impact and not forcing the double teams like he used to.  The problem is, I don't know what we would do about it.  There is not really another guy on this squad we could just plug in there.  Ngata is an invaluable player, but these injuries are really killing his production.

I know this sounds stupid but hear me out.  The guy will be 30 by the end of the season.  He is still considered a top flight guy and we could probably get a 1st round pick and more from him.  The draft this year is stacked with talent and 2 first round picks would be stellar.  We wouldn't get the same production but we have guys like DeAngelo Tyson and Spears who can play the spot as well as Brandon Williams with the emergence of Cody.  Kapron-Lewis Moore also will be coming back who would have gone much higher in the draft was it not for injury.

I know it sounds crazy, but we aren't looking too amazing this year and I'm thinking towards the future.  The cap implications are the problem.  He has a HUGE bonus but an even BIGGER base salary.  8.5 million per year on the next 3 seasons.

no one is taking that salary. esp with average production.

I'm not really surprised his body has been breaking down the last few years, even with his frame the human body isn't supposed to move that fast at that weight. At this point there isn't much difference between him and the other interior linemen.

It might be time to make Arthur Jones the man in the middle.

Ngata has been getting double teamed, I don't know why people aren't seeing that.  He hasn't been eating them as well as before, but when he's single blocked he's beating it and when he's doubled he's opening things up for other team mates.  He blew up the Miami game when they tried to single block him with Pouncey.

He's not worth the money he's getting paid, but he isn't getting pushed around like last year.  It's just going to be hard next year to do something about his cap hit.

Ngata has been battling injuries year after year it seams. As much as I love him as a player (I wear his jersey) he is in the league of salary like Wilfork. Worse, is he a step away from a major knee injury and does he play to protect himself? Watch the film, he definately takes plays off, and against smaller centers like ours, you would think he could get to the qb more often now that we have bookends like Suggs and Doom. With the cap, he may be a casualty next year.

Playing Ngata at end isn't what he was initially brought here for. He should be at NT again.

He is currently playing NT. I'm not sure what you mean.

In Ngata's defense, in our defensive scheme the NT doesn't have  a lot of leeway to make plays.  Just sort of have to sit there and eat blocks.

he will be traded or cut, his cap hit next year is like 15mil.

u clearly have no knowledge of the cap. Trading or cutting him saves us 1 mil in cap dollars. So your really getting ngata for 1mil compared to not having him if you cut him. It's a sunk cost, it's past, done, get over it, he's worth the 1 mil and will be on the team

He's not beating one-on-one match-ups at times, though. In fact, he seems to do better against double teams than one-on-one.

He did well against Miami's.  I haven't rewatched Green Bay's.  He has beaten some, but not all.

If we want to through people under the bus might as well put Yanda.  He's not playing very well right now.

He's not. Yanda has been playing very poorly recently.

The difference between Yanda and Ngata is that Yanda played well before now. This is an acute change for Yanda. Ngata's changes have been more gradual and are more chronic in nature.

Yeah, he'll likely be gone the season after next.  And rice the season after that.  I actually think Rice is doing even worse than Ngata.  Between the two I'd still rather have Ngata.

Yanda has been playing like poop all season long. He looks lost out there. Too much mental mistakes on his part or blown assignments.

Im worried that we will keep him next year. If you key in on him, he is getting pushed around a lot and 16 million is a lot for a defensive tackle. Hell for anyone really. If he wants back in Baltimore, he is taking a HUGE pay cut. Hope those Royal Farm checks are decent.

I don't know if you've seen this, but we absolutely can't cut him.  We'd only save 1 million dollars.  We'd have no leverage what so ever.

Also he's playing much better than last year.  His body just started to fail him, it's unfortunate.
He just isn't playing that well.

That is a shame. Wow. No one is going to take on that cap hit.

Basically every major Contract besides Suggs is under performing right now.

Pittsburg?  New England?  Oakland?  NYG?

We've had some of the most consistently productive players.  You can't win and then complain about it because it makes the cap tough.
