Coaching Schemes vs coaching to players strengths

8 posts in this topic

So I'm watching Tampa Bay play and they have been using D.Revis in a lot of zone coverage and leaving him on one side of the field... Even when the teams best WR lines up in front of Revis rather than let Revis play man to man or press they have him playing 7 yards off, couple weeks ago ESPN tried to make a story of Revis complaining that he isn't getting to cover the opposing teams number 1 WR because of defensive scheme. Yesterday Fitzgerald is on Revis and they put Revis in a deep zone and Fitzgerald just went inside. Revis couldn't be physical or anything because of the defense.

I don't understand why they don't let the man, play more man to man coverage. They should let him cover someone utilize that to their advantage for as long as they can and they can have the other guys cover the rest of field.

They need to look at some of Rex Ryan's defenses.

Another example of this is the Dallas Cowboys, they made a big deal of them bringing in Monte Kiffin and his Tampa 2 style defense, which is a good defense, but I read a couple of articles on ESPN about basically how the defense has turned Morris Claiborne from a man to man cover guy ( with potential ) into a struggling CB ( in zone ) that got benched 2 weeks ago in favor of Orlando Scandrick.
Sometimes coaches need to make subtle adjustments to their schemes.

Many people don't realize that this played a huge part in Asomugha's fall. He went from guy that played man to man most of the game barely got tested. Philly got him Rodgers-Cromartie and had Samuels. Of those 3 Samuels was the only one that played the Zone well, the other 2 were better man to man guys and they got exposed often in zone coverage and then begin to get beat by double moves in man to man.

I believe I read that article on Revis, and the fact that they aren't letting him do what he does is just plain stupid.  Even if you have Revis in constant man coverage, regardless of whether the play around him is man or zone coverage, he's going to give you a ton of flexibility on defense because you know that one player is going to be taken care of.  Rex did an excellent job of scheming around him, and the Bucs DC clearly doesn't know what he's doing.  This is something Cosell pointed out on one of the things he was on, and I found it rather interesting.

My philosophy on scheme versus strengths is that you have your scheme to try to find guys that fit what you want to do, but ultimately during the game you have to let your guys do what they do best as much as you can.

It has always frustrated me when coaches come in and install their own, completely different schemes that don't fit most of their team's personnel.

There was a former player - can't remember who, that was speaking of one of his coaches. It may have actually been a former coach.

Either way, told the story of how he went to a new team and basically adapted to the team instead of them adapting to him.

Problem is - that just makes too much sense sometimes you know...

The problem is that 96mil deal the Bucs throw out to just get his name instead of his ability and strength.  When you pay almost 100mil to acquire a person, you better make it worth it like scheme around him or build a foundation around him.  Well, we're talking about the Bucs organization.../shrug...

PS: It reminds me of Jimmy Smith that we finally realize his press coverage strength.....
