Coaches On the Hot Seat

142 posts in this topic

Too early to start this topic?  Maybe, maybe, but I still want to speculate.  Barring an unforeseen turnaround, I think it's safe to say Ron Rivera is going to be fired.  After the mess that is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers I'm pretty sure Greg Schiano will be heading back to the college ranks.  My number 3 coach on the hot seat is Gary Kubiak.  The year they brought in Wade he was really close to being fired, and now that Schaub has fallen apart it might be time that franchise goes in a different direction.  He's been there since 2006 I believe.

There's usually a surprise guy that gets fired, like Lovie Smith last year, and this year I think that guy could be Falcons coach Mike Smith.

So, who else is on the hot seat after six weeks?

Tom Coughlin.

I don't think any of your other picks are wrong though, but I think Rivera has a bit of leeway.

All of your picks are solid IMO. Seems odd for second year coach to be on the Hot-seat but Schiano took the Bucs from one extreme ( too relaxed no authority with Morris as HC) to Boot camp my way or highway with Schiano. That way can and does work but the Coach has to win, if he is going to alienate everyone. I mean think back to last season he had half the coaches in the league not liking him just because of the incidents involving kneel downs. Controversy.

Bucs management has spent too much money on FAs last two offseasons and that never works for teams because you can pay for talent but not for chemistry coaches have to mesh it together.

Mike Smith - like you said, might be getting warm, too. Atlanta fans aren't happy with him and his lack of post-season success is burning him big time.

Rex Ryan - I still think the Jets will be the Jets. Doesn't mean he'll get fired for a 6-10 season, though, he has Woody Johnson as an owner.

Mike Tomlin - for the first time ever, his seat might be getting hot in Pittsburgh. Won't be fired this season, though. To be continued.

Mike Shanahan - another one I hope to see bounced. See my comments on Schiano, apply to Shanahan but a rat-like face and tomato-red skin. Washington has stunk this season and RG3 is struggling and recovering.

Along with the revolving door of people who coach for bad franchises like Jacksonville, Oakland, Cleveland, etc

The reports I've seen on Coughlin is that the team will let him decide what he wants to do at the end of the season.  I believe the organization would like him to move on, and I think he's an incredibly overrated coach who got lucky twice and built a career off of that, but when you win two Super Bowls you're going to get a bit of leeway.

The supposed rift between RGIII and Shanahan could get him kicked out of Washington, that one wouldn't surprise me either.  The Jets are playing way better than I expected though, I think Rex might survive another year.

Mike Tomlin, maybe? Most Steeler fans I know still like him but that team has done nothing but regress since he became head coach.

I hope Kubiak is fired. We could use him, just saying.

Leslie Frazier and Shanahan will probably get another year at least. Their seats are definitely getting warm though.

Munchak has a legit chance to be gone.

Not necessarily. The Titans were playing well before Locker's injury. Munchak is safe in Tennessee I believe. Jets are very competitive under Geno which may have saved Rex Ryan's job in New York. His New York counter part on the other hand, while the Giants have been very patient with him, it's time to move on.

Schiano... Gone.

Coughlin... Gone.

Kubiak... Gone.

Rivera... Gone, unless the Panthers keep playing the way they did against the Vikings and Giants.

For a surprise candidate, I'm going to go bold and say that even if the Bengals win the division or make the playoffs again but end up with another playoff loss, Marvin Lewis will be fired.

Well we can add Mike Smith to the coaching hot seat now. Very surprised no coach has been fired yet.

Are you serious?!?! He has turned them around. They still remember Bobby Petrino and Mike Smith will forever be associated with him for the better. And they have both wide receivers on the sidelines

That is way less serious than the thought of Mike Smith being fired. Since when do the Steelers fire head coaches?

Steelers fans don't like Todd Haley. I as a Ravens fan don't like Todd Haley. In 6 full seasons Tomlin's made it to the playoffs 4 times, with 2 AFC Championships and a Super Bowl. In 6 full seasons he's been a division champ 3 times.

They started his 7th season with tons of injuries - Bell, Pouncey, Miller, Foote...come on man!

With all of them, I like Rex gets bounced; as his emotionally and mentally hurt, he becomes a quiet and humble man and as a result, he lowers his head and returns to the Ravens permanent DC position.....^^

I know a lot of people dislike Rex and there are others who think we wouldn't bring him back due to how he left and conducted himself after he left. I'll admit I never liked how he conducted himself when he became the head coach of the Jets but I'd welcome him back as DC. He knows how to scheme defenses. He's one of the best at it and I think he could get insane pressure with our front seven or even three.

You'd like to think that. They still have a shot to win their division. And of course, they have a shot to beat the Ravens if it's the same mediocrity that the Ravens showed in the first 7 games. You know he'd win some points from management if he pulls off either

Yeah, give him the defensive talents, we can do some magic with them; I like his aggression on defense....I personally don't like he runs on his mouth, but if he is a DC, he won't get much of publicity so we should be good....

well, I know what you meant from your last post, but I have to re-read couple times; at first you mention Todd Haley and then you follow with he made to AFC championships and Super Bowl....

Charles Barkley is good at that...lol....just thinking about him made me laugh that's all....

an opened arm for him to come back to B-more as DC.....

Thing is, Falcons fans seem to be getting tired of the constant lack of playoff success, the win last year was a slight boost but a terrible season this year might warrant change...

Do you know what, you could be right there, winning records only cut it for so long. Having said that, Marvin is an excellent coach and they'd be making a mistake firing him!!!

I don't think you were calling these teams out but just in case, there's no way I see the coaches of any of those teams getting fired unless they have a true meltdown. Cleveland has looked improved. Jacksonville just hired their HC with their GM. I think he's safe for a bit. And Oakland, I think the HC is safe for a while as well because of these victories they seem to pull out of air.

He's an excellent DC but I've got it stuck in my head that some of the division we saw on the team during the latter Billick years were - if not inspired - compounded by Rex Ryan.

Oakland's done really well versus expectations but that hasn't stopped them from firing guys before. Tom Cable and Hue Jackson were fired after 8-8 seasons, only for them to turn around and go 4-12.

Within 2-3 years probably all of those teams will have new head coaches just from poor FO work. Their FOs keep cycling, too.

That's true but they have a new GM now, so perhaps there will be some change in the culture. It's probably too early to tell either way, of course, but I think there's a chance their HC remains on the team. I think they'll give this GM & HC a few years and then cut them loose if it continues. I remember the GM mentioned that it will take a few years for them to become truly competitive. We'll have to see how the owner truly feels about that.
