Why not the spread?

24 posts in this topic

Seems like that may be the offense that fits our personnel the best now, especially with TEs as a weakness with Pitta out. So, why not go with 4 and 5 WRs sets and try to spread the other D, and see if that might get our WRs open more consistently. And also open up the other D even more for a big play which seems to be the only strength of our offense.

I bet we'd even run the ball better.

And Joe ran the spread in college with considerable success.

Is our offense always going to be behind the curve?

We're too busy running up the gut for one yard gains to try anything like that. It's Flacco and his $120M's fault

I know you have to keep the run game alive in games but it pained me to see a running play yesterday, we saw what happened on the Dallas Clark TD drive, 2 passes and bang 6 points.

As long as you can keep a back with him for protection. The OL doesn't have the ability to hold against a blitz with an empty backfield.

It's that foolish "Ravens Way" of winning and "AFC North is a black and blue division, gotta run to win".

The sooner we shed this notion that we are a great defensive team and offense has to do just enough to keep the defense fresh, the sooner the Ravens will become a better, more complete and dominate team. I thought one of the most telling things about America's Game was when Harbs said they went to the defense in the AFCG and said they were gonna give the ball to Flacco in the 2nd half. That right there says a lot to me. We cater to the defense and as a result the offense suffers.

This offense doesn't move until we finally say forget establishing the run we gotta score. Then boom we are scoring and winning n 3rd downs. Flacco was 7-11 170yds 1TD 6yd scramble on 1st downs in this game. The result was all 17 points and it could have been much more if Doss gets his foot down in bounds and we don't rely on a poor run game n the goalline.

The only reason why this offense has an identity crisis is because nobody seems to want to embrace the fact that we are a passing team that uses the run to balance things out. Even Ray Rice have said that's when most of the success in the run game comes, but for some reason we continue to unsuccessfully try establishing the run and putting you "true engine" of the offense in poor low percentage situations. This offense needs to be focused around Flacco, not Rice and Pierce.

To be fair Flaccos weapons have been banged up and nobody is blocking well. Have to be careful about slinging the ball all over the place so the LBs don't do what they did in the Buff game and go into coverage and clog the throwing lanes. It is clear at this point though that we will need to throw the ball to win the game as running seems to only be good for 1 yard. Ironically it fails at the goal line when we only need one yard.   :melt:

They've been green dogging blitz too.  The linebackers will stay in coverage, see no one is coming across and just blitz down the gap.  AJ did it twice.

Could not have said it better myself. The team's mentality needs to change, and I think part of our issues this year stem from the fact we are transitioning from a defensive into an offensive football team.

Glad to see so many like-minded people. Let's get the revolution started...time for our $120m man to put this team on his back once again and take is where we want to go. Unless of course, you like the current run run pass punt formula.

Why not a balanced offense? Balance is key. Look at New England. I know I point to them for everything related to offense, but they have a very balanced offense that utilizes aspects of the spread, west coast, air coryell, power running, zone running, pro style, etc...

I agree.  I understand that there is a lot of talk regarding balance in the offense, but at the same time you have stick with what you do best.  The Ravens are so bad at running the ball right now that it is putting the offense in 3rd and long situations (false starts are also to blame).  I would like to see them spread the field and take more passing attempts.  Having 2 incompletions resulting in a 3rd and 10 is better than having Rice gain a yard and then lose 3 on consecutive run attempts.

You're right about that. Joe's contract will force the issue of having a more Flacco centric offense. I think the Bills game was the teams first feable attempts at that and I hope coach Harbaugh isn't discouraged by the results and takes that gamble again. You don't win playing it save, just ask Marty Schottenheimer.

Passing is NE's primary weapon as the offense runs through Brady. The run is a compliment, that is set up by the pass. Nobody in NE talks about having to give the RBs a certain amount of touches.

Becasue our WR's dont have a good enough release to be open, IMO.

Yeah, this too. Even Torrey has trouble getting off press.

Yup. We have guys that are sprinters with that extra gear, but no crazy explosive first steps. David Reed was probably the best we had at that ( not that he provided much).

I know you're trying to be funny but those one or no yard gut runs are crippling the offense.

They have a balanced offense because of their passing game and a great OL. Like we talked about in another thread, when you have a great qb and great OL, you can do pretty much whatever you want

I realize that. Until they review my application for OC, all I can do is laugh about it.

I think it is more to do with Gino not able to read blitz packages than anything. But.....a combination of things as well. New WRs, some games only 3 healthy, Mckinnies out of shape and Gino add up to no spread.
