The Raven

Is Juan Castillo the problem?

335 posts in this topic

Look guys, forget Matt Birk because it isn't happening nor should it happen. That guy has shed more weight than contestants on the biggest loser. Now, if we were trying to replace a TE, may be Birk could be a good fit. Seriously, the way I see it is that we are down to 2 replacement options for Gino. Shipley and Jensen. I really don't know if Shipley is better, because if he was, he would already be there.

Now, about Jensen, nobody really knows how he is really coming along at the Center position because he has hardly practiced. So, just hope that Gino will improve and the schemes will improve to get him help...

With the trade deadline pushed back to after week 8,.I could see a trade between the Ravens and a team out of playoff contention
Occurring. As far as Jensen, the NFL isn't a place to experiment with a rookie from Colorado- Pueblo a smaller school than Gino even played for.

People are talking about Caldwell's vanilla play calling, and while I mostly agree - shouldn't we win a man on man battle once or twice a game? (Realistically more, but still?) I know it's ZBS but running up the gut is still fairly simple in that situation and we aren't winning those battles.

I don't want this to sound like a conspiracy theory but, is it possible this last game Caldwell "Cam Cameronned" it up to show that a change needs to be made? He just says to hell with it and tries to expose the issue to get it fixed?

Unlikely, but if that's what he felt it took...

Ya know, if Castillo proves to be the problem, I will happily eat crow. He just has such a good track record it doesn't make sense for me to think he's the problem. He's a very well respected line coach, so the likelihood that he is responsible for the problems is low to me. We'll see what happens.

I could care less if my opinion or anyone else's is right or wrong, just get this figured out...we're so much better than this.

That said, it takes two to dance. My opinion is that he is one third of the problem. The other two thirds lay on having mediocre players at critical spots on the OL. A change of scheme is going to do exactly what it did late last year -- mask our problems rather than cure it.

Rob & Vinny from 105.7 The Fan said that John allows Castillo to call offensive plays.....

Yeah, until I get a quote from Harbs or another coach, that claim has no basis.

Even so, what's wrong with the run game coordinator calling a few plays?

Oh yeah, and they're so often right.

Maybe his plays are the ones that ARE working. How would we know?

He's the Run Game Coordinator, not the Pass Game Coordinator. His plays aren't working.

Or they aren't being executed well. No way to tell for sure.

same as not working....

I would love to one day go to my boss and say, "What I thought would work should work even though it didn't this time. The group just didn't execute it well. They will execute it better after a couple more tries!"

What is a run game coordinator?

What is Castillos job on this team?

We don't have Dean Pees and then a secondary coordinator.

You can say Castillo is not the problem, but I don't buy it. Hes not the only problem but hes certainly a big part of it. It's blurred lines. He's teaching blocking techniques to lineman which isn't his job. What happens when Moeller teaches different fundamentals?

Castillo works a lot with the lineman, so is he coordinating them on the run game, but the backs are left to Montgomery?

There's an obvious disconnect. And I think Castillos role, or lack thereof is the problem.

Duh, the calls could be good, but the execution could be bad. Simple, right?

Harbaugh has repeatedly said in every presser this season that we just haven't got a hat on a hat. More times than not, that means execution has been bad.

Have you ever thought that Castillo may only know one way. The Eagle way? Ever think the "Eagle way" (LOL) more that likely will not and cannot work without mass change to the makeup of that team?

Could the Eagles offense convert to the Ravens former ground and pound game within a year with that light in the behind squad? Don't think so...

In my opinion i would think  the run game coordinator is some one that overall calls run plays.  I guess Caldwell is the one thats calling the passing plays and Castillio is calling the run plays.  If that is true then  that can cause some problems because it seems Caldwell and Castillo are not on the same page

Yep.

If this is true, and their respective titles could suggest this, but I doubt it. (Coaches can't be that stupid.) If it was true, how can play call coordination work? How can two minds call the same game and read and react plays???

I can understand it at a certain extent since Caldwell  is more famous when it comes to creative passing attacks while Castillo is a guy whom  has been around with the  eagles since the elite days of Brian Westbrook also been one of main reason why Westbrook was so successful . I think Harbaugh figure it would be  a good idea to have  one coordinator dialing up creative passing attacks while another try to dial up creative running attacks(  hasn't been creative yet)  .

One other reason why Castiillo may have the ability to call plays on offense is because  Harbaugh figured his offensive line would benefit greatly from Castillo teachings but Castillo may had said he will only join the ravens staff if he's given a position that will help him in the long run to  becoming a offensive coordinator or more . Harbaugh being well aware of Castillo great history with developing offensive line men may had felt like he couldn't let Castillo go so he made him the run game coordinator/did Castillo a favor.

I can't. Two people, dialing up plays creates indecision. Game planning together and practice drilling? yes - playcalling no.

It is really hard to say anything from the outside looking in. I don't know what the cause of this is. We know these men know how to play football. I don't tend to believe in coincidences like this. It is extremely hard for me to say that Castillo is not the problem.

While it wasn't anything close to perfection, this team was firing along nicely at the end of last season. They bring Castillo in as Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach (a unit that lost 1 starter compared to the Defensive side of the ball). On the whole, the phases that we thought were going to be an issue (Passing and Defense) are playing more than well enough for us to be 5-1 right now. The areas of responsibility for Castillo are exactly what are dragging us into the mud.

Fine, people want to say that the players aren't executing properly .. okay ... but getting them to execute properly and as one is Castillo's job. If after all of training camp and 6 games there is little improvement, apparently what you are teaching these men is not getting through. It's not like we have a rookie OL ... these men -know- how to play football .. they won a championship doing it less than a year ago. Something needs to change up. And if Castillo is being allowed to call plays, I think that needs to stop until his unit can prove then can run block and protect our QB. Leave the play calling up to the OC.

The real problem is who decides whether run play or pass. Is that someone else or 1 of the 2?

I doubt they both call plays. But the question is still what is castillos role.

Andy Reid called the plays in Philly. Two guys calling plays and there isn't 2 years of play calling experience between them? Unbelievable! Harbaugh has allowed his ego not common sense to rule.

To add to the confusion and to micro-manage!

I dont wish to dog the man, but he should probably been hired in as a consultant first.

Truth be told....Harbs has Moeller in the "Dog House" because of his drinking problems. He most likely will be fired or let go, Castillo will be taken over soon....

We can't run right. Coincidence or Michael Other?

Didn't tell us anything we didn't already know, but sometimes it is nice to get an outsiders POV confirming what we see.
It's mainly horrible play by nearly everyone. He repeated something I said a few days ago...it's tough for Yanda to play well when the guys on either side of him are playing so poorly...which is why I am hoping that the addition of Monroe starts a domino effect. If he plays well, it helps KO play better. If KO improves, hopefully that leads to Gino having two quality OG to help him. Oher is a lost cause, but if four of the five can work together and do a good job, it will go a long way

I agree. That article is just a rehash of what we know a bit of. However, you can't completely trust their analysis because outside of a player being beat, you don't know who misses their blocks. BTW, Oher possibility is the best performing OL this year, so he is far from a lost cause.
