Baltimore Orioles: 2013-2014 Off-Season Discussion

440 posts in this topic

Sad to have to start this so soon, but after an "almost" season we know we have a few things to fix and a few decisions to make.

How can we fix the starting pitching?

Who stays and who goes?

As much as I like B-Rob and McLouth, I think we have to go in a different direction. I think Schoop is going to be really good.

I wouldn't mind bringing Nate back as a 4th OF, but we need more production from LF. That's why I'd love to see us go after Shin Soo-Choo.

Pitching is also a big concern. JJ is going to command around $9M in arbitration, which I think the O's will pay... as for starters, there aren't many out there, but someone like Arroyo or Burnett could be an "innings eater" we need.

Pitching:

Scott Feldman probably will be gone. Jim Johnson will probably stay (Orioles say they will offer tender) unless some other team offers him more money which is possible, like the Yankees? We should try to keep Bud Norris. Kevin Gausman can only get better. I look for him being a reliever or even a starting pitcher depending on this offseason. However we should look in the free agency for a starting pitcher or even trade for one. Jason Hammel I hope we resign him for the next couple years. When does Bundy come back?

Hitters:

Brian Roberts contract is up (was 4 years/$40M) I would keep him but he gets injured to much. I just don't see him coming back honestly. Same with Morse. McLouth i hope we can extend or perhaps trade him. Chris Davis nuff said.

Catchers:

Extend Matt Wieters.

Steve Clevenger has been good in Triple A hitting wise (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/6825/steve-clevenger

) so I would want to see what he can do. He can also play 1st base too I guess. Good back up for Matt Wieters.

Disapointing year but hey, at least they made it fun.

All the focus this offseason should go to pitching, pitching, pitching. And more pitching.

The AL is getting really crowded with emerging talent.  CLE, KC, OAK, TB... I could see LAA having a bounce back year too.

Just 3 things to point out.

1. Norris is locked up through next year i believe.

2. Really? thats surprising, he was pretty horrible this year. Nothing like his 2012 performance.

3. McLouth is a free agent, can't be traded. But I do hope we re-sign him as a 4th outfielder, like FerrariFan said above.

Anyway, I hope we figure out what to do with Markakis. He isn't worth the $15 million he will be paid next year, considering his year this year was BAD. Obviously we can't just release him (and i wouldn't want to), and nobody would take on his contract. So i'm hoping he can just have a bounce back year.

Everyone says get rid of Markakis... Am I the only that has heard he was playing injured most of the year?

My man is a career .290 hitter.. The best pure hitter on our team.... Easily

And his defense is automatic with a outstanding arm

Also has the best plate discipline on our team. I would be very upset if we rid of him. Plus there's no one better available.

I know it's unlikely but I would love to get Shin-Soo Choo.

Could play anywhere in the outfield, lead off hitter with a great OBP and he's only 31.

I don't know why I do this to myself looking at free agents. Always end up disappointed and with Wieters & CD's contracts almost up it's highly unlikely we sign any big name free agents. :(

How much would you guys give Chris Davis? (If you were the Orioles).

He's 27......I would hope 6 years for 70 million would be enough. (11 a year)

I'm worried he'll want something higher. If we let him play another year without a deal it could bite us in the butt.

1. Chris Davis will NOT sign for less then 80 million over 6, IMO. He'll be making about 13 mil in arb. this season I believe  ( get it done )

2. Markakis is on a short leash to me. He's been on the decline for 4 years+

3. McLouth cant hit lefties and has a weak arm , but the glove is solid ( Adios)

4. WIeters probably wont be resigned, someone will pay too much for a +glove

5. Roberts should be resigned as a situational player, maybe more if health is solid (?)

6. Johnson will probably be offered a contract, doesnt mean it will be market value.

7. Norris, Feldman, Tillman, Gausman  ( should be  locks) Gonzo, Chen, Hammell on the bubble

I feel Wieters will be resigned. He is a big part of the team.

I think his production can be replaced, so I'd rather not see us sign him over quality pitching!

Once again the Orioles "show interest" in a free agent only to never even open up some sort of negotiations (Tim Hudson)... he would've been a nice addition to the back of this rotation. Oh well, what else is new?

i hope orioles take the rays spot in the playoffs next season, oh and get rid of jim johnson he stinks one of the worst closers in the league. It's insane how many games he blew.

Jim had a bad year, those blown saves were the difference in a tight playoff race. Im not ready to cut bait just yet though, I think he should get a shot to rebound albeit on a short leash. Also, IMO getting a proven top of the rotation pitcher is more important by far
