Christian Thompson cut

38 posts in this topic

After this week, Christian Thompson's 4 game suspension will be up and the Ravens will be forced to make a decision on him.

If no one was paying attention to him during the preseason, you're lucky.  He was dreadful in all aspects of the game.  He had one big hit, but otherwise looked completely lost out there.  So, what do we do with him?

Obviously, Elam, Ihedigbo, and Huff will all remain on the roster.  The new guy, Miles, has drawn praise from coaches.  They love him already.  Levine has been a steady contributor on ST as well.  Even our PS guys, Trawick and Omar Brown, seem likely to get playing time before Thompson.

Do we cut him this soon?  He was a 4th round pick just last year, which wouldn't be something that the Ravens would ordinarily do.  Do we bring him back on the 53 man?  Or do we come up with some fake injury and hope he can turn things around next year?

Its gonna be a tough decision for the ravens  but he does have nice upside probably can even play cornerback since he's so fast but im not sure what the ravens are going  to do with him. I know he didnt light it up in preseason but what he showed in training camp may be important as well.

The fact that the ravens dont usually give up on their draft picks right away ( especially high  ones)may give the impression that its no way they cut him but we will see.

No way he can play CB.  He's not good in coverage at all.

He may not be able to cover but because of his speed he may have the ability to possibily play cornerback  in the slot. The ravens must  still value  him in some way  but we shall see.

It isn't like we have solid depth at that position.  I suspect he sticks around, but I don't expect to hear much about him the rest of the year.  If he doesn't improve next offseason, he's probably done by the final cut.

I think they keep him hoping for improvement for next year. Remember, a bunch of the guys on this years team will be gone next year. We will need some new blood then.

I don't know if he qualifies for the practice squad (did he play in 6 games last year?). In any case, I am more concerned about making room for Asa in week 9!

I am sure Harbs and the front office have a plan about what they plan to do with Christian.

I think the coaches will give him a look for at least a week.  If he can show some flash they'll find a way to make a room.   If the coaches wanted him gone he would've been gone by now.

Speed does not equal ability to play CB.  See Fabian Washington.  They may still value him, but he cannot and will not play CB.

I disagree with the last statement. He's around because he cost them 0 money for 4 weeks and because they have an option in case of an injury. I wouldn't say he's gone, but I also don't think he's safe just because he stuck around this long. It made sense to keep him since he's essentially under free control.

This is a very interesting question, and we'll end up in the same boat once Asa returns from his suspension, and possibly again late in the year if Pitta is able to come back from IR. You're looking at possibly having to replace three guys currently on the roster.

They will wait until the last possible minute to make that decision. If they really like Thompson's potential or special teams abilities, maybe a team out there loses a safety/corner and is willing to give us a draft pick for Huff. I agree that Asa is the much more difficult question because he certainly did show enough during the preseason to pique the coaches interest. But by then somebody could be injured, and it may not even be an issue.

The difference is that with those two, Jackson and Pitta, we won't have to decide whether or not to keep them in place of someone else. Of course we will hav to decide who to cut, but it sure won't be either of them. In this situation, we may well decide to just cut Thompson and keep the roster as is.

I hope we at least keep him and give him one more once-over before we let him go.  He's a heck of an athlete.

Spot on regarding Jackson and Pitta, truth be told I don't think it matters what happens either way with Thompson I don't see him getting any game time this year

I think he has a pretty good skill set. I would like to see him stay, I think James is on the last year of his contract, and I don't think the ravens trust Huff all that much. The year he came out in the nfl draft he was the fastest safety. I think you have to at least let him get on the field during regular season games to judge him. I personally like him as a safety in the long run.

Christian Thompson has been officially reinstated by the NFL, but the Ravens have been granted a 1 week roster exemption.  We have another week to determine whether he's worth a spot.
