The cone of silence?

Fines usually come out on Thursday. Not always, but most of the time.

Thanks. I was reading on PFT about another player receiving a fine and thought that fines came out on Tues.

We aren't getting coverage because we aren't a flashy team. It isn't just us either. The Bears didn't get respect last year, and neither did the Steelers. This year, KC and the Titans are getting respect for not being 0-3, but they still get talked down to.

This!! All attention is not good attention.

Trust me, if the defense keeps playing like they have the past 2 games, there
will be a lot of attention made about how the Def is better than last year.

Considering we are the defending champs, and we can't get some hype for beating down a supposed AFC powerhouse, I find this hard to believe....but when we get beat down by the Donkeys in week 1, the annointing oil was broken out...

I think all they are saying is it would be nice to get some sugar to go with the salt

Why does everyone wanna be talked about so badly.  When the offense has a dominating performance we will be talked about, thats just how it is.

I guess the reason no one is gushing over us is we got beat really bad by the broncos and didnt look good at all. Then we just got by the browns in a game if they dont drop some passes we may have lost there too. In houston the defense looked good in the second half, 2 big plays or we would have been hanging on for dear life at the end of that game. We still have a long way to go before we will be mentioned as a power team in the league. Lets give it a few more weeks and see how we do with green bay.
We are heading in the right direction but until we can move the ball on offense we are a one and done playoff team at best right now.

Lets worry about the bills and forget the media !!!!!!!!!!

All I know is that we're hated.

Michael Irvin talks so much about us it is getting to the point that I think the Ravens stole his lunch money as a child. He made underhanded comments the whole time they showed the highlights of the Texans game and he went so far to say that the only way we would win another game is if we had a big play (like Tandon's return) every single week.... implying we weren't talented enough to win on talent alone. That we needed some huge play and luck to win. It made me so mad.

Just wondering, but is it actually a "cone" of silence?  Makes it sound more hardcore than a "code".

If the reference is what I think it is, it should be the Dome of Silence.

Lol, I have no relation with baltimore, and often wonder why does so many people including media hate the Ravens. Only thing I can think of is the organization having so much success early on, and over the years and that's the cause of all these haters.

Combine that with the way we had success. We were straight up bullies in the early 2000s when everyone else was shifting toward offense we were dominating with defense. Casual fans aren't big on that style of play and thus our accomplishments have been minimized.

I couldn't give  a crap if they respect us or not. They are a bunch of talking heads.

I will never understand why a lot of you yearn for national attention from a group of guys in suits who are full of it. Why you care about someones opinion that much is laughable. They haven't picked a super bowl champion correctly in pre season in forever! They aren't experts, they can swing any story any way.

That being said, turn on the radio or read articles on the internet. Our defense is getting a lot of praise. But as much praise as that will get, be prepared to hear the negative about one of the league's worst offenses which I'm sure you all will be complaining about too....

It's week 3. We have a long way to go.

People either hate us or love and respect us. There does not seem to be much middle ground. I have a feeling that we could win 3 SB in a row and it would not change a single person's perception of us. It just is what it is.

I actually prefer they don't acknowledge us most of the time, I mean I wouldn't know how to react with praise. When the Super Bowl came and people began to pick us it felt like they may jinx us lol

Unrelated, but I llike the dome of silence over squealer nation. When's the last time we've heard from one of our yellow dish rag waving "friends"? Kinda nice and refreshing.

It is strange that the Ravens don't get positive media attention.  They seem like a respectable team, and organization in general, but you hear very little about them in the national media.  However, this has been happening for quite a long time so I've become accustomed to not expecting to watch ESPN cover the Ravens like they do the Patriots.  It just doesn't happen for us Ravens fans.

Part of me hates it, but part of me believes it helps to keep this team hungry.

The silence continues. I have not been able to find any of the major football sites a single word on if and what the amount was for Mercilus hit on Joe. Did he even get fined? If it had been a hit on Payton or Brady or Aaron they would all be covering it.

$15,000 fine

Salt makes those sweet victories that much sweeter.

Once you accept that the talking heads just don't eat crow, the sooner you can enjoy your life.

As strange as it sounds the further they slip the lesser our rivalry becomes and I gotta say I love that rivalry. I hate everything about Pittsburgh and I've never been there in my life.

Yeah I never was into the whole "we get disrespected/ignored for no reason" thing because its only true when referring to the main stream sports media which mainly serves casual football fans. When it comes to the more knowledgeable sites, shows, and analysts our Ravens have always gotten praise(usually defense) and a fair look. Our team has historically been defense first aside from the first year or two and the offense has held the team back most of the time, so no matter how good we look in the regular season or what we did in playoffs(and we have been there so much and failed on offense so often) few expect our offense to make it to a Superbowl(and for very good reasons). This makes us more of a stepping stone in peoples mind than a true contender and is a reason for us being written off and disrespected. I do say the collective insecurity of Ravens fans fit that of Baltimore citizens.

That's true.  We don't play aesthetically pleasing football as much as a lot of other teams, so the average fan doesn't like to watch our games very much, even though we play a lot of close ones.

Like last week. Yeah, we beat the Texans, but people hear "1 offensive TD" and are immediately turned off.

I'm wondering if that is going to keep our game off CBS in my area.  According to my cable listings, the game on that channel has yet to be decided.  If I get stuck with that crapfest in London, I'm gonna be salty.

You are going to get the Steelers Vikings game unfortunately.

Not many people outside of the local coverage areas are going to get the Ravens game this weekend.

Only 3 things I dislike. one the lack of coverage leads most casual sports fans being Ignorant about the Ravens which creates a whole cycle of ignorance.

Two the disrespect in power rankings. This bothers me a lot more because you can cover whatever you want on TV but to disrespect us week in and week out on the power rankings is ridiculous. Yeah power rankings mean nothing but it starts the cycle all over again.

You have to be a 40-something or at least appreciate 70's TV to fully appreciate "The Cone of Silence"

Ravenwildman!!  I always like reading your posts, and thank you for posting this topic.

While your observations are nothing new, it is reassuring that I am not the only one to feel this way about how the national football media covers the Ravens.

Surely there is some kind of objective journalism out there from a major publishing house that doesn't have to sensationalize every aspect of the sport of football.  Certainly not everything needs to be described as lethal, deadly, explosive, weapons etc.

But could the world do without the wishful thinking type of projections and rankings that goes into every piece of blog on espn and nfl network?  Is there an end to certain debates like who is better Manning or Brady, Rg3 or Luck, blah blah blah?

Really at the end of the day it's a crapshot to predict the game or the season, and it's utterly pointless to have power rankings and other such nonsense.  A game doesn't have to be pretty to be enjoyable, and the game has the power to consistently surprise you even in the most mundane of match-ups.

Yet that is a pulse that the media isn't driven to find.  They don't care about the good that players do off the field, and they will never let us forget a stripper named sweet-pea either.  Ray Lewis could feed a million starving orphans by hand but sports illustrated would pull a front page cover for what Kaepernick tweeted about what he ate for breakfast instead.  It's actually insulting that they think that the bad news is the only news people want to follow!

So yeah for me I'm fine with tuning into the Ravens with my family and friends at the bar, in the stands or on my couch and to tune out the noise unless they have something enlightening to say.
