Ravens Grades Against the Texans

38 posts in this topic

Great win and great team effort. Ravens playing Ravens Footbal in all phases - Offense, Defense and Special Teams.
Ravens fans got reason to be excited and looking for more things to come. Doc Martin's grades:
QB Joe Flacco A
16 of 24, 171 pass yards, 0 TD. 0 INT. Numbers don't teell the whole story. key stat No Turnovers. Joe played very good, calm and poised as usual. Despite having to start in bad field position most of the 1st half, he managed to move the offense against very good defense. Joe showed his tougness on plays where got hit. Still would like to see TD pass or two, but needs help from his receivers.
O-LINE (A-) after taking another look correction to B-
Our O-line was great for most of.the game. The protection for Flacco was good. They all deserve A, except McKinnie who had 2 same penalties on the.same.drive, other than that he was good. Texans front seven are one of the.best and our guys did outstanding job. We still need to improve blocks for our running game.
RB & FB Bernard Pierce A- S.Draughn N/A Vomta Leach A+
Our running game lwas not effective. It looked as stuck in 1st gear, got little.better in 2nd half. Pierce was grinding some tough yards and got TD. Still, on some plays it seems he.could choose different lane and get more yards, which only happened on one play good for 18 yds. 24 for 65 yds is decent. Draughn had one decent.run and return. We need to get more production here. Leach was Ouitstanding again. 8 tough yards on the ground, 2 catches for 11, a lot of blocks and plows through, great game.
WRs T.Smith A B.Stokley B- M.Brown B-
Smith clearly the.best WR with 5 catches for 92 yds, still could have more on questionable "no catch?" call, Was Joe's primary target and played well against good defense. Stokley only had 1 catch for 1st down, M.Brown two catches for 6 yds, coverage was.tight, but we expected little more.from.both.
TEs D.Clark B E.Dickson N/A Bajema N/A
Clark had 4 catches 46 yds and one drop, playe good. It seems he made improvement in catching passes from Joe, and this was clearly his best game so far.
Dickson had no catch. Dickson was there blocking for few plays, but besides that him and Bajema were no factor all day. Maybe its time to give Jusczyk a chance.
D-LINE A+
Ngata, A.Jones, Spears all of them great game. With Canty out there was little concern but Spears played great. Subs Cody and McPhee played well too.
OLBs T.Suggs A++ E.Dumervil A++ C.Upshaw A+
All of them just OUTSTANDING. In combination with O-line in putting pressure on QB, sacks and limiting their running game to minimum, for the whole game, overall just PHENOMENAL.
ILBs D.Smith A++ J.Bynes A
D.Smith is just turning.into Pro Bowl caliber player, what a.game! Led the.team in tackles, his INT for TD changed the game momentum. Bynes also great game, both had impact on stopping Texans run game.
SAFETIES J.Ihedigbo .A+ M.Elam A+
We needed great play from.our safeties.and we got it. Ihedigbo was all over the.field. Awesome performance.
CBs L.Webb A J.Smith A C.Graham A
Very pleased with our secondary this week. They kept everything in front of.them and didn't allow any big play.
Very good game by all of them.
SPECIAL TEAMS A++
T.Doss finally broke.the.lomg one for great.TD.and Tucker bounced back with 3 FGs. Job well done.

Joe was on the same page with his receivers most of the time. I recall a couple overthrown passes and atleast one, where Joe led his receiver too much. Mostly, Joe felt prey to the offensive scheme, that desperately tried to establish a run game, that we don't have this season. B-

Much of Joe's performance was on the Oline. Not only did they do a bad job run blocking once again, but allowed way too much pressure to come Joe's way. One of McKinnie's fauls earased a huge gain into Texan territory. C-

The RBs were largely a non-factor in this game once again and were not running the ball effectively, until the passing game started to spread out the Houston defense. I guess, that's the gameplan for offense going forward. C-

WRs/TEs. Made some nice plays, when they had the opportunity to. Overall a good effort as they seem to gain confidence. Even Dickson caught a pass. B+

Defense I'm not going to pick that unit apart. I think every single part of our defense had a good game. All of them showed improvement from the last two weeks and that against a very loaded offense. A

The ST bounced back in a major way after being largely dissapointing in the first half. The return team gave our offense consistently bad field position in the first half and there were still some huge blunders (damn you Trawick!). JT was on the money today and Doss had a great return for a TD. B+

I can get behind these grades, looks about right to me although I'd put Flacco at a solid B. Maybe even B+

Like these grades better than OP's (no offense).

I can hand out that many A's with how many penalties we had in the 1st half. It got corrected but still knocks things down a peg for me.

Looks good to me, other than ST. Any time the special teams unit scores, it's an automatic A imo

It's not like our offense was the greatest show on earth in the first half, but those horrid field positions didn't help. ST scoring is a huge deal, I agree, but when they keep our offense from scoring (or make it atleast harder for them to score), I can't give them an A.

Maybe for forcing the Texans D into all those penalties, but Joe did have a fumble, that could've been recovered by Houston, that's why I end up giving him a B-  (and our receivers a B+ for recovering it), eventhough he had a pretty impressive 3rd down conversion rate against a top notch defense.

Still, Joe seems to find more rythm with those new guys and even if that process goes on waaaaay slower than the progress of our defense, it makes me still hopefull, that the passing offense could be the thing we can lean on as our running game struggles.

Here's the Russell St Report grade on the Oline:

• Offensive Line: 2.39 yards per carry, 2 sacks, -40 yards on 3 penalties. GRADE: F. The offensive line has to be the biggest weakness on the team right now. I still am not quite sure how this same offensive line basically did what they wanted in the playoffs and now they can’t even muster enough strength to get a first down on 3rd and 1. Other than a couple of good runs from Pierce when the game was already over, the offensive line has some serious issues opening up holes for Pierce and Ray Rice.

At first, I thought that perhaps they just needed time to gel together and maybe having a new center was causing some issues. Now, I think it is Juan Castillo and the complete overhaul of blocking philosophy. From what I understand Castillo has implemented a zone-blocking scheme, which is similar to what the Texans actually run. Maybe I’m taking crazy pills, but I thought that the Ravens tried to install the zone-blocking scheme a few seasons ago and it went terribly, so they went back to a man-on-man blocking scheme and everything vastly improved. I don’t pretend to be a genius, but I refuse to believe that Bryant McKinnie, Kelechi Osemele, Marshall Yanda and Michael Oher are collectively this bad.

I agree with these rankings..but would give Joe a solid B and specials teams a solid A

Yeah the fumble sucked but I thought Yanda jumped on it. I was just thinking to bump his grade because he hung in under heavy pressure and without any running game. Plus, like you said, the snap counts fooled the Texans and basically took them out of the fourth quarter.

The Texans are a dominant defense and he played essentially mistake free.

There's no way Special Teams gets an A++.  13 players on the field during the FG attempt, that resulted in a 1st down??  Come on man.

2 other ST penalties prior to that.

No way in hizell the O-Line gets an A-, The only reason there was positive rushing yards late in the game was b/c

the Houston D-Line was sucking major wind.   O-Line gets a C- at best.

Flacco B+ Can't go A because early on Flacco had a few overthrows, he earns B+ because he did a lot to avoid pressure and took care of the ball.
Oline C- Flacco had some pressure in his face early on, at one point Houston had a 2 or 3 man rush that put pressure on Flacco smh. No chance in the run game, guys hit in the backfield early and often.
RB/FB C. Pierce C rarely got yards after contact, showed hesitation before hitting hole at times, Leach B while leach bruised them on a carry and catches , his lead blocking didn't help the run game at all.
WRs/TEs - B Torrey smith A , Dallas Clark B+ everyone else C or incomplete
DL B+. spears B made some plays in the run game,
Ngata A was all over the field in run game getting pressure etc...
A.Jones B was also highly active
LB. A Suggs A he had great game in run and pass rush,
D.Smith A all around good game,
Upshaw B very strong in run support had penetration up the middle a few times,
Bynes C IMO his worst game yet missed a few tackles, beaten in coverage also.
McPhee B I saw McPhee coming fast and hard off the edge in this game I thought he would get a sack or two he was so close.
Dumervil B he played his normal game minus the sack.

Secondary B+ Ihedigbo A he was everywhere making strong tackles energizing guys ,
Elam B also had a good game tackling and in coverage, has to clean up late hits out of bounds though.
Webb B solid in coverage gave up a few passes made the tackle instantly..
j.Smith C+ Actually had a solid game coverage wise he just gave up too many tough catches letting the WR push off just enough to create the separation needs to improve ball awareness could have a few ints.

ST B+ Doss A great game breaking Punt Return, Tucker A redeems himself , Koch A his usual game. Would be an A but I remember a few penalties that kept a drive going, and that put us in bad field position.
Trawick - D he got a penalty called on him, I felt he crowded Doss down the sideline as well.

Our running hasn't changed. We have been doing mostly ZB for a couple years now. I don't really have an answer for why they have been so bad though. McKinnie is too slow and KO has undwhelmed at OG. Gino has been below average as well. I think it could be a continuity thing.

Joe's arm talent overshadows his football cunning. I liked his improvised forward pass, while he was fumbling. Too bad, no one bought it, when Joe was trying to argue for it. Once again Joe's lacking acting skills came back to bite him. :) I stand by my grade. Joe is having a good overall season. I believe he will be much better down the line. He could have a great season, if the Oline starts play well.

Wasn't there a late hit penalty on our ST that basically set Houston up in field goal range?  I don't think we can give their guys credit for that.  We also had a penalty on one of our returns that set us up in the shadow of our own goalpost.

Speaking of that late hit, they called the penalty on Trawick, but the announcers on CBS said they couldn't find the foul when looking at the replay.  Did anyone actually see the penalty, or was it a phantom call?

Yeah, but I still don't think that drops them from an "A" after scoring 16 points and having good coverage on KOs and punts.

I'll give our ST an "A" for the final 3 quarters.  Whether or not that outweighs the problems they caused in the first quarter is a matter of opinion, I guess.

After taking a another look I corrected grade for O-LINE from A- to B-. I agree our blocking for running game is not acceptable, but you also have to look at the opponent. Texans D-Line is one of the best in AFC and their front 7 maybe one of the best in NFL. So with that in mind I think our guys held their own. It was nice to see we got them jumping on few snap counts. Most of our problems were caused by J.J.Watt who had 1 sack and was very disruptive but other than him I thought we.had everybody else covered. There were.some penalties that hurt us like McKinnie's illegal hands.to the face 2 times on the.same drive. The biggest concern is our inability to create holes for running game. We need an improvement in this area for sure. It seems as Rice is little better.in finding the hole, while Pierce is more of straight North South runner, so that could be part of the problem. Another question mark is the Blocking Scheme, for some reason it doesn't look the.same as.last year.

Other than starting the game with a couple of 3 and out drives, I thought we played fantastic. This was an undefeated team that came in favored, and we sent them packing. Yes it would be nice if the offense was really clicking the way the defense was, but they did enough to win this game, didn't force things. All three phases of the game, defense, offense and special teams put the ball into the end zone. No missed field goals. Running was weak, but honestly when your top RB sits out for a game and the backup maintains the football and grinds down the clock like he's asked, its hard to take issue. There were no opposing team touchdowns again this week. Lots of sacks and hurries. Fewer obviously catchable drops. Everyone gets an A- (good job, but always some room for improvement) for this game nobody really expected us to dominate.

Holy cow Doc, now that I'm reading the proper post, gotta say I disagree with a good bit.

Come on Fly, give our guys some credit. We can't play Browns every week. Texans are suppose to be one of the top teams in AFC.
I can see we are improving game by game.
