Ravens Grades Against the Browns

38 posts in this topic

Tough Game on Sunday. Its better to have an Ugly Win than a Good Looking Loss.
So here's Doc Martin's grades:
QB Joe Flacco B-
Joe looked very calm considering what his mind was going through with his wife & baby situation. 1st half couldn't get into any rhytm and was about average, not much help from his TEs, and was pressured quite a bit by Browns defense. Got better in 2nd half and converted crucial 3rd downs when needed. His TD pass to Brown was very nice. Another important thing - NO INT, NO FUMBLE makes his grade go up. So, Good Game, Joe, Congrats on the baby boy. 211 passing yards, 1 TD may be enough to beat Brownies, but we will need more next week against Texans.
RBs Ray Rice C Bernard Pierce B+ FB Vonta Leach C+
Rice was held in check for most of the 1st half, tough 36 yds, caught couple short passes, looked good for B, but that FUMBLE could of cost us a game. When our running game got going, he got injured. Fortunatelly it doesn't look serious, so we all can hope he will be back next week. It was nice to see Pierce picked up from there and we didn't miss the beat. He finished with 57 yards 1TD, pretty good day. Leach had one catch for 12 yards, but was hoping for more effective blocking especially in 1st half.
TEs Dallas Clark D Billy Bajema C+ Ed Dickson F
Were they even playing? Bajema had 1st catch of his career for 18 yrds and OUTPRODUCED all of our TEs! And he is a BLOCKING TE, WOW?! Clark was targeted few times, 1 catch 8 yds. Some throws went too far off the target, but he still has to find the way to get open, and when he gets his hands on the ball catch it. Dickson had one catchable pass and he dropped it, so after that he was used mostly as blocker. Not sure if it was Caldwell or Flacco idea, but in 2nd half Flacco didn't look for throw to any of TE, and rightfully so. Our TE's have been dissapointment this season so far and they need to step up.
WR's Torrey Smith A- Marlon Brown A- Brandon Stokley B
All of our WRs had a good game. We still need to get them going little earlier than 2nd half and we still need more production from this group. Smith caught 7 passes for 85 yds and that's good considering the Browns took away the long pass. Brown was solid again and its becoming consistent target for Flacco. Stokley after one droup caught everything coming his way, 4 for 36 and made crucial catches on 3rd down to move the chains, which is exactly what we expect from him.
O-LINE B for everyone
Hard fought battle there. Nice to see Oher back, line showed improvement this week. Still needs to get better in creating holes for running game. QB protection was pretty good for most of the game. Not having bad penalties is always a plus.
D-LINE A
Very good job accross the board. Good blocking and good gap protection. Put pressure on QB all day long, control their run game as well.
OLBs Terrell Suggs A++ Elvis Dumervil A++ C. Upshaw A
Sizzle and Doom were both OUTSTANDING. 1 sack each and could have more. very impresive. They were in the backfield many times and making plays. Upshaw had a.great game as.well.
ILBs Darryl Smith A+ everyone else B
Good game by our Linebacker corps, big improvement from last game.. Kept ther RBs in check for most of the game. Got lucky on 1 play when they left RB open, but Weeden missed him. D. Smith stood out with 1,5 sack, great game. J.Bynes had a solid game with and A.Brown did his part with half a sack and had a good game.
SAFETIES M.Elam, J.Ihedigbo, M. Huff all A
Very good by all of them. Besides 1 pass play where the TE went for 55 yds in1st quarter, our safeties played solid game. They clamped down and tightened their coverage, did not allow any big play after that. Giving Elam more snaps than last game was a good move and everyone benefitted with good performance.
CB's L.Webb, J.Smith, C.Graham all A
Lardarius Webb had great game. By keeping him from away from ST duties he looked fresh and more effective. Jimmy Smith was a pleasant suprise with probably the best game of his career. Definitelly big step up from the last game. C.Graham was very good and rebounded from last week. Secondary was a.big question mark coming into this game and they all did wonderfull job in this game, so Kudos to them and the D-Coordinator Dan Peas.
SPECIAL TEAM T. Doss A J.Tucker D-
Well, Tandon Doss made his comeback and played great! It looks as PR/KR is the best spot for him, at least while J.Jones is recovering. Doss look.good and made couple of nice returns, one of them had a TD potential. Supprisingly, kicker Justin Tucker had a worst day of his NFL career by missing TWO FGs. Well at least he nailed two extra points and all of his kickoffs, and We Won, lucky for him. Even bigger supprise was that ex-Raven Billy Cundiff made both of hos field goals, sorry Billy, just kidding.
One thing we learned is.the Browns are turning into pretty good and tough to beat team. And they will sneak up on someone and win some games this year.
rSo we just have to be prepared because we will have to play them again.

I think our defense played lights out, but our offense still has a lot to be desired. I liked the corrections made of getting Huff off the field and not throwing to the tight ends. That instantly made our team better, sadly. As did Doss as the return man. So give some of the coaches a gold star for fixing things.

Areas where we still have problems going forward -- we are not getting anywhere with our run scheming. I think that really starts with the O-line not creating lanes, but I'd say that aspect of our game I'd give a D, divided up amongst the O-line, RBs and FB. TEs get an F, again. No evidence of improvement. Kicker, surprisingly, gets an F -- hopefully Tucker will rebound. I'd give the Defense as a whole an A, and the remainder of the offense a B.

That effort was good enough to beat the Browns, but we still aren't playing like a contender.

I don't think Torrey & Marlon deserve A's

Both dropped td passes .

Joe should have had 3 td passes against the Browns.

Id give them B's

I don't know, if our secondary deserves straight As. I saw a couple wide open receivers out there, who would've atleast gained alot of yardage, if not scored a TD, if the Browns actually had a good QB.

They still need work, imho.

I agree with that. Joe, who usually has one of the best deep balls in the league, just can't seem to connect with his WR deep. The offense, started to come alive once we sorta gave up on that. That's mostly on the receivers. Torrey couldn't secure a TD pass and ran out of bounds juggling the ball, while Flacco hit Marlon right in the hands, but Brown couldn't hold on to it.

Am I the only one, who was reminded of that dropped TD pass by Torrey against the Steelers in 2011, when Brown dropped his TD pass against the Browns?

Anyway, I would actually say, that Stokely deserves a bit more credit than Torrey and Marlon for this victory. He was pretty clutch on those 3rd down conversions.

Stokley B+, Torrey and Marlon B

Funny, the first thing I thought of when Marlon didn't catch that td ball was the Torrey drop against Pittsburgh because they looked so similar.

Joe gets an B- ? For what, throwing perfect touchdown passes to Torrey and Marlon that were dropped...while they (Torrey and Marlon) get A's?

Me thinks you watched different game. Joe gets an A plus. If not for dropped passes, he'd have at least six touchdowns this year already.

Hey, when he plays bad I'll say so, look back at some of my posts from last year!
But last Sunday Joe played about as well as he could have. If those two touchdowns are caught, he finishes the game with probably 300 yards and three touchdowns...much better than a b-

I hate to assume anything, but I seriously hope you're not just looking at the overall score as the determining factor of the quality of the offense or defense.

I gave Torrey and Marlon both got A - minus. The pass to Torrey you claim to be "TD pass" was thrown little too close to the sideline,. Torrey didn't have a good position on it, but still caught it, unfortunately didn't get both of his feet in bounds. That was very hard ball to catch, maybe 1 out 5 tries he might get it right, maybe if it was 6'5 Randy Moss 10 years ago, maybe. So I don't see as Torrey dropping a sure TD pass, not like Clark did week ago in Denver.
As far as Marlon Brown on that play, I agree that he should of made the catch there. He kind of redeemed himself with the TD, but I would drop his grade from A- to B.

Anyone who watches football knows that was the proper placement of the ball - away from the defender. If he led Torrey right out in front it would have been easier for Haden to contest it...sorry, go back and watch it, that ball should be caught 5/5 times by a nfl wide receiver. In fact, he had plenty of room, he just didn't catch it on his first try. If tried to, bopped it up and then caught it on his second try. IF he catches it on his first try, he had plenty of room to stay in bounds. Torrey even said so on his twitter later for Pete's sake! I just don't understand how even that would justify a B- for Joe, I don't see on more than 1 or two plays in that game where the outcome of the play could have been made better by him, he played as well as anyone, better than most anyone would have given all the circumstances. HE deserves an A+.

And I'm not a homer. I call for Joe's head when it's deserved. Last week against Denver anyone who grades Flacco higher than a C+ is drinking too much Kool-aid. Even if Clark caught that touchdown, both picks were on him, albeit the first was also a good play by the defender, but also not the best decision and not the greatest pass. But against the Browns, Flacco was the man. HE made every throw he was supposed to make, and bought time when he needed to, no turnovers, and he didn't lose composure due to the dropped touchdowns or his wife being in labor.

Ok, we.can argue about Torrey's 'No Catch TD". Of course Torrey was gonna say he should have it, he could of had a Touchdown there. Torrey's ttiming was little off on that play, Im not sure if it was him or if the ball got there bit early. Needless to say Im not basing my grade on this play only. Joe played well, but 211 yds passing and 1TD are very average numbers, in no way deserving A+ grade as you suggested. I wouldn't trade Joe for any QB in NFL, but in the 1st half he has to convert those 3rd downs and put points on the board. Dropped passes or not even if takes to run for 1st down and keep the drive alive. Our offense in 1st half got into a field goal range only ONCE, sorry, but that's just not good. So I could grade Joe C- in 1st half, A in 2nd half, equals B- for the game.

Dropped passes: THE reason we looked flat was in the first half  Period, at least as far as Joe Flacco's contributions are concerned (the running game is a different matter, of course).  He had numerous first downs and a couple of TDs that weren't caught because of his receivers.  Not his fault, so it isn't fair to lower his grade because of it.  He did his part in making the play we had to make, but he isn't the only guy on that field that has a responsibility for completing the play.  In the second half, we looked better... because the receivers caught the ball when it came to them.  Flacco didn't play any differently.

You're argument is non existent as Joe did his His part, show me more than three plays the whole game where Joe Made a mistake, because I can find only three.

Teams have been playing the deep ball.  Just keep us in front of their corners.  That's why so many of the crossing routes and posts have been open.

Just finally was able to actually watch the game..

Seems the O-line worrying may be a little overblown...

Also, Pierce looks soo much better than rice

Defensive side.. Big props to Jimmy for playing a good game

Daryl Smith is everywhere an Haloti Ngata is a beast

Nothing stat wise but he created at least two of the sacks (only watched it once and havent really watched in detail yet) and was a force in the run game

Usual game for Haloti but we take it for granted too much

Joe played good. Not outstanding, just good. Someone said he should get A + . 211 yds & 1TD is not desrving A +, Dropped passes or not. 400 plus yards & 4TDs that would be A +. Its time to start comparing Joe to elite QB's in this league. Not to look at him as an upgrade from Trent Dilfer and Kyle Boller days.

Its time to start comparing Joe to elite QB's in this league. Not to look at him as an upgrade from Trent Dilfer and Kyle Boller days.

Maybe that criteria is applicable in fantasy, but not in the real world. Leading your Team to a win when most around you are not playing well is outstanding and that can't be seen looking at stats.

Your logic makes no sense.  The ultimate stat line has next to nothing to do with how a QB actually played.  I'm not saying Flacco deserved an A+, but you can't just say "211 yds & 1TD is not desrving A +".  The quarterback is not the only person responsible for those stats.

Based on on what you stated, we could of said Brandon Weeden had A game because his passing yards were about same as Joe's. Minus the TD and his team lost. But we could also note he was sacked and pressured many more times than Flacco.
Look, Im glad we got the win. I also expect more points on the board in next game bacause I dont think 14 will be enough tp win the game against Texans.
