2013-2014 NHL Season (Caps, etc.)

115 posts in this topic

I've decided to try and get into the NHL: bought their version of Game Pass last night and I'm hoping I find a team to stick with.

Gone with the Ducks for now (good attacking team, semi-smart FO, nostalgia with the Mighty Ducks being that cool side back in primary school, good Finnish presence*, team that hates the Kings, cool colours), and their game vs the Blues is looking like a nice spectacle so far.

*My bandwagon team in the Olympics, haha.

Ovechkin with his 800th NHL point with the 4-2 win over Boston.

He is still a scoring machine and maybe since he and his Russian teammates were embarrassed at Soshi, maybe he came back with a chip on his shoulder. Go Caps!

I'm just glad he hasn't had a Olympic hangover like in 2009.

Don't be silly be a bruins fan, the ducks are a kinda meh team anyways they usually choke in the playoffs (although we have badly too)

It's interesting that a lot of teams made moves for goaltenders before the deadline - although it seems like that's what it takes to win the Stanley Cup these days - either you are just loaded with scoring talent like the Pens or Blackhawks, or you have to have a stellar goaltending performance.

Yeah there WERE some great deadline deals happening. Bruins got Mezaros from Philly for a 3rd..Flyers won that deal considering that they wound up getting Macdonald from the Isles. Mezaros isn't physical at all for being a big guy and cant play pp or pk.

St.Louis to NYR for Callahan also a crazy deal. Should work out well for both teams.

Also, anybody watch the Caps-Flyers game last night? Great game

Tbh I'm not actually all that worried about winning championships every year - I'd rather have an offence-based team that's fun to watch. Aren't the Bruins quite physical and defensive?

Yeah bruins are always a brutal defensive and strong team that gets in a lot of fights but thats what makes them fun to watch, offensive teams arent as reliable because in the playoffs unless they have a hot goalie they wont go too far.

Those teams are a lot of fun in the regular season, but they'll break your heart in the playoffs.

You would have liked the Capitals a few years ago.

So great last two seasons for my Sabres... lol

yeah, Buffalo needed to officially rebuild the roster. Having to deal Miller to do it hurts, because he has many prime years left..but gotta do what you gotta do I guess. It's just crazy because only a few years ago, they were a playoff team.

mike green is the worst defenseman in the nhl.  in football terms, he makes corey ivy look like primetime.  caps should have traded him when they had the chance a couple years ago now no team is dumb enough to take him.  he is good for at least one goal against every game.  he looks like hes not even trying anymore.  what a disgrace.

I've been saying that for years. He shod really be a forward. He's good with the puck, good shot, good skater.

Defensively, he is horrible. Doesn't win corner battles, weak in front of the net, doesn't block shots. No physical aspect to his game to speak of.

Was watching him during the caps-flyers game last week. Flyers were just teeing up on him, and he wound up coughing up the puck to Giroux right in front who scored..because he doesn't read where the pressure is coming.

yeah i feel like he completely lost his confidence.  When was the last time he won a board battle?  He's the softest player on a defense full of softies.  Its a shame because he showed a lot of promise like 4 or 5 years ago now he just seems scared.  i trace all his confidence issues back to 2010 then he didnt make the olympic team and his toughness issues back to when he started getting injured shortly there after.  I like Orlov a whole lot but he needs to develop his defensive game more.  I think he will eventually get there but that kid is fearless

Another weak link in our D is Connor Carrick and John Erskine. They're both under 5'11 which is pretty bad for a D man plus we have great D men down in Hershey right now but no, Oates won't bring them up because they don't shoot the with the right hand....

Yes they were, but I am happy with what they are doing, they already have a really good prospect pool and with trading away basically all of their above avarage players they have tons of picks in the future. They will be stacked in 3 to 4 years.

I still hope Grigorenko gets his act together
