Defense needs to create turnovers...

73 posts in this topic

People in the secondary should practice with the receiving corps once in a while! There were several should-be INTs. I'm not too concerned, though. BAL's D hasn't given up a TD since Week 1!

There's a reason they're DBs instead of WRs.

Stone hands(Well, Webb doesn't have stone hands. Jimmy's aren't too bad either).

Just look at Ed Reed... or Ray Lewis.  With conditioning, defenders can put themselves into great opportunities for INTs.

God we are spoiled as a fan base

Those two were once in a generation talent. Reed and Lewis were two of the most skilled players ever.

They were smarter, not athletically superior to everyone(albeit both were great athletes).

Through mental training they put themselves into position.

We don't have a guy like that anymore. Our three best defensive players(Ngata, Suggs, Doom) are attack dogs. Not thinkers(not calling them dumb, but they don't call the shots). They harass the QB and the RB and make life difficult for popping olines.

Ray and reed made life difficult for the whole offense, and we had both of them together.

We have talent, and smart players, but Ray and Reed were special

*end extreme obviousness*

I was referring to the secondary.  We still haven't seen a lot of Elam, he could turn into an INT machine for all we know.

Elam played very well. Especially with a WR corps that talented.

Elam is more of an enforcer who has coverage ability than an int machine

BAL will probably draft another S early next spring, so we can only look up.

No they won't. James I won't be expensive and Elam is doing well.

Saftey isn't an imminent need. And Haha won't be available.

This draft is loaded with offensive talent. Especially at TE WR and oline.

This will be an offensive draft with maybe one or two defensive players

A lot of people on here are confident that S will be a big priority for BAL in the Draft.

I just thought I would do a little tiny bit of work on this... nothing huge here, but I thought it was interesting.

Through 3 games, the NFL average team has created 5 defensive turnovers.

I broke down the teams into those who have created more than average, those who have created the average number, and those who have created a below average number.

12 teams have created 6+ turnovers on defense

7 teams have created 5

13 teams have created 4 or fewer.

The total record of teams in each category:

Teams above avg: 26-10 (.722)
Teams at avg: 10-11 (.476)
Teams below avg: 12-27 (.308)

So far it seems there is a fairly strong correlation between defense creating turnovers and teams winning games.  Average teams in terms of takeaways are about average in win percentage (sitting right around .500).  Above average teams are winning a lot, and below average teams in this category are losing a lot.

Interesting that we sit with just 1 defensive takeaway, and have a winning record.

It just is an indication of how much potential we have. Do not worry those turnovers will be there when we need them. Our defense will only get better from this point and we have seen  how far they have progressed in just 3 weeks. Let's watch them in Buffalo. Go Ravens!

Well, I don't feel like a moron now for thinking we will be a top 3 defense once again. Even spent $2 on them in my auction league!
