Troll free state of the Ravens discussion

52 posts in this topic

After watching the rest of week 1's games, I do feel bad about the thrashing the Ravens took but I saw a lot of mistakes league wide, another thing I noticed was the ridiculous amount of passing going on. It seems that its more like a video game now.

And how do we define "true fan". I looked in Websters and couldn't find a definition for that exact phrase. Are we going with the guys that spend the most money on team gear? Or maybe PSL owners? Certainly they have proven their fanhood. Folks that watch every game maybe? Cheer the loudest? Paint their bodies purple? Who makes that determination? I need to know so I am not accidentally labeled a troll.

I'll preface this by saying that this is just my opinion;

I think a true fan is one that can criticize their Team without speaking in absolutes and one who supports them, win or lose.

This is not really true my friend. Green Bay, New Orleans, New England, Pittsburgh, Seattle, giants, none have invested top draft picks in the wide receiver position and when you add Baltimore you see a trend here....what do these teams all have in common?

Not true - Baltimore has spent, since 2005, 4 picks: 1 first rounder, 2 3rd rounders, and a second rounder on WRs/TEs. In that time span for rounds 1-3, on receivers and tight ends: Green Bay 6, New Orleans 2, New England 6, Pittsburgh 8, Seattle 4, Giants 8. Keep in mind New England also signed 4 free agent receivers in their primes during that span. And all of those teams have spent at least 1 recent first round pick on a receiver.

Honestly, with all the talk about WRs and TEs im more concerned about the run game.

It looks like Torrey and Marlon Brown are going to be a good 1-2 punch and Jacoby looked good so when he gets back we'll be set 1,2, and 3. I think Mellette can step in and give us something better than Stokley right now. Doss may even be good for a catch or two.

TE's I think will get it together. Clark CANT POSSIBLY drop that many balls every week. He just cant. And Dickson will never be like Pitta making the tough grabs in traffic, but I think if we use him the right way by getting him the ball in space he can be dangerous after the catch.

I'm worried that the run game looked so bad. Rice is what he is - boom or bust. He breaks big plays in the run game, but isn't consistent. Pierce I thought would be that guy to consistenly grind out the tough yards and move the chains, but we routinely got stuffed in the backfield. Maybe its just going to take a while to adjust to Castillo blocking scheme...

But I think there may be an issue with having 2 O-line coaches. Castillo is supposed to be the "run game coordinator" but every news story about the O-line quotes Castillo as if hes the o-line coach. I just think that's an odd situation, might have nothing to do with the struggles, but I just don't like it.

RB was supposed to be our strength.... and looked like a weakness game 1 even before Oher went down. Hopefully they get going bc that will open up the pass for us.

I hated the constant rotation of RBs. Rice was getting taken out way too much. I know our ground game failed to generate production but if this rotation keeps up it may cause problems. Give the ball to Rice till he is tired or if for some reason they are stuffing him and bring in Pierce to catch em off guard. Thats how Pierce made his $ last season defenses wouldnt key in on him too muvh leaving him able to cut up the field for big gains.

RB rotations or RB by comittees are just ugly. Unless you have a stout pass attack and this team is built moreso around the run, and weak on pass catchers not named Torrey Smith. So hopefully the run game gets going next week and all in all PRODUCES above all else.

Have to have hands to wear gloves

Da-dun :P

Now that's cold. Would gloves let him hold the ball better? I would have thought the opposite.

Well let me put it this way - I don't consider a "true fan" someone who magically appears on the boards after a loss and lambasts everyone from the front office down to the vendors and says they all need to be fired.  I don't consider someone who writes a threat entitled "a history of Ravens decisions that have hurt the franchise" a fan.  I don't consider someone who gets on here for the sole purpose of mocking other peoples opinions and saying inflammatory things (what I would define as a Troll) a true fan.  I mean the loss sucks, we're all unhappy that Peyton shredded us and that Q is balling out for his new team and that Dennis is currently trying to rehab an injury, but does that mean people who take a more positive view on things need to be called things like "homer" and told to "take the purple shades off"?

I have no problem with people calling out players if they feel they haven't performed, but to sit here and constantly say things like "Ozzie has lost his touch", "Without Q Flacco is lost", "the defense is finished we have no hope without Paul Kruger", etc., over, and over, and over, is tiresome.

Green Bay has used two 2nd round picks on WRs with Nelson and Cobb. NO you are correct, but still managed to find talent. NE used 2nd round picks on Gronk and Dobson. Pitt used 3rd round picks on Sanders and Wheaton, and 1st on Heath Miller. Seattle used a first on Tate, a first + more for Harvin and spent extravagantly on Sidney Rice. Giants used a 1st on Nicks and a 2nd on Randle.

The most the Ravens have spent is a 2nd on Torrey and 3rd on Dickson. Pitta was a 4th as was Doss. Most of our recievers have been late round fliers, UDFA, or someone we brought in from another team.

I think you are missing my point. The OP got it. I am asking who is the person who should make that decision? You? By what power do you or I get to define what a true fan is? Someone else could easily say that if you do not fork out the money for PSLs you are not a true fan. Or do not go to all 16 games with your body painted purple you are not a true fan. How is that any more or less true than your definition? While I have a problem with these constant whiners like you and the OP do, I am not so arrogant that I feel I can call them out on their fandom. They are annoying. Their griping and complete lack of logic and game knowledge is mystifying, but they can still reasonably consider themselves fans

In reality, if someone believes they are a "true" fan, then they are likely a "true" fan whether we like it or not. And the sad truth is, these "fringe" fans is what makes the game more profitable for the owners and the NFL. We are already hooked. Its this bandwagon group that the NFL is catering to now and understandably. If we want the Ravens to be a larger market team, then we need these "fringe" fans.

I noticed problems too and even when oher was on the field the run game was not good. I saw another thread where Oher's injury caused it but I was thinking it's not Oher its Gradkowski. He doesn't seem to recognize certain thing repeatedly when calling out protections. I planned to make it a point to pay better attention this week but I am glad I'm not the only one who noticed oher had nothing to do with it . or is it Castillo, not fond of him not bashing but never liked him .

It IS tiresome but in reality, they are 'true' fans.  Anyone who takes the time to create an account and post on any Internet message board has some sort of fandom in them.  The energy they bring may be more negative than positive, but that's just how some fans are.  I've been watching Ravens games with a gentleman at a bar I frequent for more than ten years; I think I've heard not more than ten positive things from him about the Ravens in that time span but he BLEEDS purple.  He has more Ravens merchandise than anyone else I know and is obsessed with the team.  He hates almost everything Ozzie and Co. do, he's still not a fan of Flacco, he still thinks we should have kept Boller AND Billick and on and on.  At the end of the day, the guy loves the Ravens but he's just a flat out sourpuss.  He'll never change, he'll continue to hate almost everything the Ravens do and yet he'll be the first one in the stands cheering his butt off at every single game at M and T.  That's the nature of fans.  Ya gotta respect both sides of the coin as well as be truly thankful for those fans that are, 'in the middle' as it were as I know you are, Lifer.

Just wanted to start a thread for all topic discussion where all true fans agree to ignore the constant trolling that have been plaguing these forums lately.

Both positive and negative talk is welcome so long as its rational and backed with legitimate fact or at lease based in reality.

All trolling is to be ignored, other than to neg as much as possible, and we agree not to quote or reply to such posts.

I apologize ahead of time to mods if this isn't worthy of its own topic or is in the wrong place.

How are you tonight??

ESPN said that gradkowski made errors in calling protections so your correct . They went into detail and I didn't get it but he's young he will get better. One thing no one seems to mention esp.." people calling for heads to roll and the sky is falling crowd". is in the first half we were not only holding our own but were leading. then oher and jacoby went down and  things snowballed from there. losing anyone on the oline is huge just ask big ben.
