Dennis Pitta is a bigger loss than Q (Anquan Boldin)

183 posts in this topic

And what you aren't seeing is that if Pitta went down and we still had Boldin, we'd be in much better shape than we are now.   You said it yourself, Crabtree bring out means they feed Boldin.   Well, they can afford to have Crabtree out because they now HAVE a Boldin to make up the production.

We did not have a receiver on this roster to make up Q's production.   And Pitta isn't a receiver, he's a TE, so I am not sure how we continue to come to this "Pitta can replace his numbers" thing.   They were both on the field at the same time last year.   And once Cam Cameron was gone, and Boldin was being used properly, he went into beast mode.

The bottom line is that Boldin could have caught 4-5 of those dropped passes on Thursday.   Even with Pitta out, with Boldin on our team there is a better than average chance we win Thursday night.   And that is what is making some people angry about this trade.

Boldin has a history of absolutely ripping it up in first games with a new franchise. He was awesome yesterday and it may continue but it may also prove to be his best game all year.

Also; No doubt he would have been nice on Thursday and going forward but someone like Marlon Brown may have been cut or not given a chance to get on the field.

I'm not saying he will be as good as Boldin but it just might prove to be a good move to release Boldin a year or so removed from the decision. In other words, given time it may pay off in a way it wouldn't have if Q was still here to finish out his contract.

After seeing how good he looked, absolutely! How would you not think that? He does run better routes than those guys and he absolutely would have gotten more yards after the catch because thats what he does. The odds Q would have faired better than those two did against the Broncos without Champ Bailey is like betting on Secretariat to win a horse race featuring all donkeys or Joey Chesnut to eat more hot dogs in 10 minutes than a pre-schooler haha

.____. The Broncos were missing their best CB. It will be ok tho cause we are gonna wax Cleveland this week and get back on track.

But I don't see how Q makes a difference - instead of the guys we had + Stoke, it would be all of them + Q.  So say Q has 83 yards and a TD instead of Stoke's 34.  Jacoby still gets hurt and is out, Q probably doesn't change that.  And what Q definitely doesn't change is the fact that Clark dropped a TD and Dickson left about 60 yards on the field in drops.  Even giving us 1 TD still loses us the game by 14 points.  The receivers were not the issue in Denver, the tight end play was by far the bigger problem, and Q or no Q doesn't effect the loss of Pitta and the fact that Clark and Dickson were dropping passes left and right.  We had 100 yards of offense out of the tight ends when we should have had close to 200.

Dude if we had Q not a chance Clark would have been targeted on that big 3rd down drop, it would have gone to Q. Dickson wouldn't have had as many drops because Q would have stolen some of his looks, hence reducing his drops. Its addition by subtraction and I truly believe it would have been a totally different ball game with him. This is my last post on the topic. He is gone and isn't coming back so I am done complaining about it.

If Boldin can produce against Seattle like he did against the Packers I would be sad but Pitta was a bigger loss for us because we wouldn't use Boldin the same way the 9ers did.

This is pretty simple. The Ravens miss Boldin because Pitta got injured, If Pitta is healthy, trading away Boldin is really not a big deal. The fact is they both were practically the same player last year and the plan was for Pitta to take over as the primary slot receiver in the offense. If I have to choose between the two I take Pitta every single time, he is much more of a match-up problem. Put a good cover corner on Boldin and he dissappears.

Nah. Boldin is a bigger loss than Dennis Pitta in my opinion. I think Boldin might have been set to post his best single season numbers as a Raven this year had he stayed in Baltimore.

I'll bet Pitta would have, as well.

Wait wut? The man just put up 200 yards and a TD with a QB he has played one game with... Yes he would have done better than a kick return specialist and an undrafted rookie free agent

Also that QB hasn't played a full season yet I may add & was able to use Q like that just showed how good the coaching staff/49ers offense are.

Week 3 in the books.

1 Great game by Boldin (or was it a bad game by Packers young secondary?) and 2 eh games.

A lot of people were questioning the move Ozzie made and after ONE game, thought we made the worst mistake ever.

Truth is Pitta is definitely a bigger loss.

So, thanks Ozzie for getting these awesome defensive players instead of over paying Boldin. I appreciate you!

How many catches do our receivers have?

How many catches do our tight ends have?

While the answers to those questions are not the best indication of their overall impact on the passing game, they can lead us the right way. At this point, it is evident that the drop off from Pitta to the rest of the tight ends has been steeper than the drop off from Boldin to the rest of the receivers. Although, Clark and Dickson may be starting to turn the corner. Still too soon to tell which loss had the bigger impact.

I like that it seems the perception around here has changed to agree with this.  Two weeks ago, a post like this earned two negs.  Now, it gets the opposite.

Some people get worked up over 1 game, it's a bit silly for me, I figured we'd have some struggles at first, since we did get a bunch of new people, I'm waaay excited to think of how good we can be when we're close to or completely,100% gel'd.. oooh Glorious

It took all of 1 week for teams to figure out how to stop Boldin. Pitta is a much bigger loss. Not only does he cost less, he would've been our only good TE. They don't call them a quarterback's best friend for nothing.

By the way, vs Green Bay, Boldin was targeted more times than he had in any single game here.

Packers dedicated their defense to stop the read option and the run. Plus, Dom Capers is an awful coordinator who can't make proper adjustments.

I can remember when cats in here was downing Boldin because he was too slow and couldn't get open.  now, they are singing his praises!  lol!  Pitta is on our roster and imo a huge loss for us at the moment.  hopefully, the rest of the receiver can stand up and make plays for Joe.

Now that Q is being covered man-to-man, you're starting to see the same production we saw out of him last year.  5 receptions for 67 yards is about what I expect an average game from him this season will be.  The Packers have no corners and covered him in zone - so he ate them alive.  Everyone from here on will cover him with man, and he'll be the same receiver we saw the last few years here - tough as nails, makes every catch you want, but can't get separation.  For the sake of this season, we should be worrying about how a guy like Deonte Thompson is progressing, and how Marlon Brown will continue to progress this season.

Gotta love these guys....
It is/was obvious Pitta was a huge loss, one that we will not overcome. So it's up to Torrey and Marlon to really step up to the plate and pick up the slack. And they will, once the rest of the offense gets it's act together.

I love our front 7 so much that I don't miss Boldin a bit.......

PS: I never question Ozzie's moves of Boldin but I was very disappointed when he was traded.......Well, I like being a fan......

Yeah....

Pitta doesn't go away when a LB does man to man coverage on him..

Defense figured out not only the read option, but how to stop Q. One of the two offensive weapons(not named Gore) on the niners......

I'd rather have Dennis. Younger, great hands, gets open even in good coverage.

As you were gentlemen

"Seek the truth and the truth will set you free!" The truth is if Anquan Boldin wanted to be a Raven he would still be here, adjusted salary or not. He left for more money and that was his own business decision. Losing Boldin and Pitta in the same year was a huge loss for the Ravens and debating which loss was greater is counter-productive at best. They're both gone and the cumulative effect is devastating to our chances of a repeat run to the SB. With all due respect, Brandon Stokely and Dallas Clark are in the twilight of their respective careers and they cannot replace Boldin and Pitta. With that said, its time to rally round them because they represent our best chances to move the chains. Ed Drops'em has consistently demonstrated that he is a backup TE at best. His one long catch that was negated by a penalty in the game with the Texans did not make up for the many drops he has had in clutch situations. He benefitted from the Dennis Pitta injury more than anyone on the team but he has simply failed to compete for the #1 TE position. There is no chemistry between Dickson and Flacco because Dickson has brick hands. I would be pleasantly surprised if Pitta makes a comeback but Dickson is not the long-term answer to our TE woes. We need to draft a big, tall, former college basketball player like many other NFL teams are doing --- someone like Julius Peppers. Oh that's right he's a DE. Oh well! I'll bet Julius has good hands. Basketball players learn how to catch a ball with their hands rather than their chest like Jacoby is still prone to do. Go Ravens! Beat the Bills!!

Q was being covered in man to man against cortland finnergan and he still had quite a productive game last nite (90 receiving yards and a  touchdown) and to my understanding Finnergan isnt a bad cornerback at all. In the 49ers offense  i think Boldin is gaining more separation alot more  then he was here because they actually have a offense thats tailored more to his strength. I feel like he's going to have   1,000  receiving yards and 8+ touchdowns for the 49ers  but anything can happen

Boldin also wore Finnegan out. The latter did not finish the game.

Boldin had 5 catches for 90 yards and a remarkable TD. The past two weeks he drew double coverage. For this game Vernon Davis was back and he drew coverage he could dominate.

I still believe that before this season is over, the loss of Anquan Boldin will cost the Raven's a playoff berth.

Thanx Ozzie

...The truth is if Anquan Boldin wanted to be a Raven he would still be here, adjusted salary or not. He left for more money and that was his own business decision...

Not exactly

Facts are at least as important as the Truth and here are the Facts.

Boldin did not leave for more money, after his scintillating playoff performances Boldin was asked to take a pay cut.

The Raven Front office essentially "hard balled" Boldin to play for less or be released.  Boldin was under contract for this year and the Front Office wanted him, but they wanted to pay him less than his contract. (Rumor is about 2 million less.)

Boldin's response was that he was a "Raven" and would honor his contract and not ask for more....and that the Raven's should honor his contract and not demand a pay cut.

Joe Flacco commented publicly that Boldin should stand his ground in regard to the "arm twisting".

The Raven's (Ozzie Newsome) made the decision to trade Boldin to San Francisco for a 6th Round pick.

Those are the facts.

It certainly appeared that Joe Flacco had just learned to use Boldin's height and sure hands with back shoulder throws when one on one.  It was glorious while it lasted.  It's just a shame Flacco doesn't have that target this year. The "Possession Function" of Boldin was clearly lost on management and that speaks volumes in regard to what may be going on in the Front Office.

If the Raven's miss the playoffs this move will likely be a key reason why.
