WR Aaron Mellette

37 posts in this topic

Are they going to activate this guy any time soon? I think one of the biggest problems is that we can't have Stokley playing in the slot on every single down or he'll be too worn out, like during Thursday's game.

I just want to see this guy get some more action.

I like Mellette a lot (and even started a thread on him during the preseason), but I just don't think he is ready. I don't know why, just a hunch.

If they don't sign someone off the street and Thompson is still hurt than they have no choice but to activate Mellette. We can't go into a game with only 3 active WRs especially when one is a 37 year old slot receiver.

I also agree with this. I'm not sure he's ready, but he's gonna have to get ready fast.

So Brown was ready in our opener, but Mellette isn't? I think going with more 3 WR sets of Smith, Brown, Mellette would work better than trying to rely on our TEs.

I'm still baffled we didn't put Juszczyk in the game.

That game really felt more like a pre-season game than a regular season game. It looked like we were trying to figure things out on the fly.

After seeing our TEs drop every ball thrown towards them, I agree.
Our base formation should be 3 WRs, 1 FB and 1 HB.

He's going to have to be activated unless Thompson is ready.  Like others pointed out, our guys could barely even run on Thursday night, offensively and defensively. The WRs need to be rotated more.  Limit Stockley to 3rd and mediums and second and longs.  And our base formation absolutely needs to be more 3WR sets and less snaps for Clark.

You're right, and that'll be the theme during the whole early part of the season. By mid season, you'll see this team starting to get into a very good flow, and by the end of the season, you'll see this team playing lights out after having experience and getting rookie mistakes out of the way. Just hope that we don't do so bad in the early parts of this year that we are clawing our way into the playoff hunt, which is indeed very possible.

Why? He's clearly not ready. I don't think a slow hback would help matters. Dallas Clark redux.

Because it wouldn't hurt to see what he can do even in garbage time.

At the second half at least lol. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that felt that way

Now that Jacoby Jones is injured, Mellette will probably be activated for every single game for the next 6-8 weeks. Time to shine in limited opportunity.

Stoke will still be the slot guy, but he had WAY too many snaps on Thursday. When Stoke isn't tired the 3WR would be

Y: Marlon Brown

X: Stoke

Z: Torrey Smith

When stoke is tired it can be:

Y: Mellette
X: Brown
Z: Smith

And that^ will be our 3-WR set of the future. That will be our version of Jones/Nelson/Cobb or Thomas/Decker/Welker.

The Jacoby Jones injury is the best thing that could ever happen for this team in the long run, and for the careers of Marlon Brown and Aaron Mellette.

I agree with you and hope you're right. I can see Deonte added to the mix too when he comes back.

I agree its the best thing that could happen to Brown and Mellette, and for the teams WR corps of the future.  Just stings right now because we have to use both at the same time, 2 UDFA rookies.  Would have been easier to be using Brown for the 20-30 snaps a game like he said was supposed to be the plan in Denver.

Now it's going to be 30-40 for him and 15-20 for Mellette.

so they put haden on mellete? That doesnt make sense. he'll be on torrey all game

Some DCs play with those kinds of matchups.  Put your #2 CB on the teams #1 and give the corner safety help all game long and let your #1 corner, a guy like Haden just completely erase teams #2 WR, in our case Brown.

Once again we're going to have to rely on the underneath game and guys like Dickson, Stokley and Clark to move the chains while taking the occasional shots downfield to Smith.  I hope Caldwell uses Brown in alot of crossing routes to get him away from Haden next weekend.  That is if thats how Horton plays the Cleveland defense.  This won't be an easy game by any stretch of the means.

So basically, we're screwed.

Unless they give alot of snaps to Mellette on the outside and push Brown inside ( I don't know if he can play the slot or not), but offensively we're not going to be doing so hot when we meet a team with a legit corner the way the WR situation is right now.

Unbelievable we lose Pitta before the season starts and Jones for half the year after 1 quarter of football.  Absolutely unreal.

Haden is a fantastic corner, but he can only cover 1 receiver at a time.  Outside of that, all of their other corners are undersized, and their safeties are very low on NFL experience.  A guy with Mallette's size should be able to take advantage of their secondary assuming he isn't covered by Haden.

T. J. Ward is one of the best safeties in the NFL. And their front seven is easily talented enough to make up for any deficiencies in the secondary. Anyone expecting our offense to dominate is going to be in for a very rude surprise.
