Team shopping for WRs?

102 posts in this topic

Here's an interesting question. Do we actually have a legitimate #1WR in Torrey Smith? Is he capable of surpassing that 1000 yards receiving threshold? I dunno. He doesn't come of as a consistent enough threat and he doesn't seem to even compare to the likes of Dez Brant or Andre Johnson, non of whom has a particularly great QB.

No, we don't. But with a decent #2 Torrey can crack 1000.

If our defense comes together and actually starts to play well, I know who to give credit for it. Flacco. Ozzie was very busy building up the defense, but didn't provide Joe with any weapons in the passing game.

I hope Mellette and Brown turn out great, but it's ridiculous, that we have to hitch all our hopes to late round draft picks and UDFAs.

It's especially ridiculous considering the defense is trash so far. So in the end we're left with nothing.

wouldn´t go that far. we played the best QB in history of football surrounded with 3 1000+ yards receivers. broncos will shred many defenses. we will be just fine in a few weeks...

considering the original topic: I don´t see any receiver on the market that would help us in our current situation. I have no problem to stick to our young guys and let them prove themselves.

Torrey may not be a true #1 yet but he has very high potential and he is just getting better every week. brown could be something as well...

Ohh ok. lol.

Off topic, but whats with the talk of wanting a new center? One game, and people are done with Gino? Smh.

Well the talk is well deserved, Gino was so bad that that one game was clearly equivalent to a season's worth of bad games. He needs to be cut immediately or relegated to back up duty so we can go find a good center... Like Jeff Saturday.

Based on my definition - no.  IMO a number 1 can consistently beat an elite cornerback.  Thanks to all the rule changes, the receiver has the advantage now, so the best i.e. Roddy White, CJ, AJ, will pretty much be open regardless who they have trailing them.  We don't have a guy like that.  I think Torrey could become that guy - White wasn't that guy when he was first in the league - but as of right now he isn't.

Ya know if there was a REALLY good WR out there or a center for that much, they would be on a team right now.

Noooope. Notice how Gino's play declined after Oher left the game. Yanda had to help out Wagner more and wasn't able to slide toward Gino to help him (in his first start!).

That's the problem here in America, everyone wants results right away and have no patience. Just need to chill and enjoy the ride, it was only the first game.

i actually like marlon in our passing game, Flacco  has a good option at WR and watching some highlights from his college days, he's actually what we have been missing in our WRs corp, he's aggressive and actually attacks the ball instead of waiting for the ball,

As for WR I say we stand pat with what we have unless they really just look terrible. We can always try to trade for someone else later before the deadline. There's nobody on the free agent market I would want at WR.

Now, I think we could use a return specialist even if Deonte Thompson is ready to go. I don't like the idea of having nobody to return kicks except Bernard.

I'm still for Devon Wylie, though I would rather we spend our free agency money on a Kerry Rhodes if we spent it anywhere.

I don't get what makes people comfortable about WR at all. Both WR & TE are positions of need.

Whatever the case is all we need is someone who can run & catch. Nobody in FA is an upgrade IMO. Whether that's TE or WR....both are question marks.

Brown looked good but he's still unproven. Jones is hurt. Stokely is 80. Mellete isn't ready. Clark is 79. And Dickson doesn't have any thumbs.

I'm very comfortable about WR. Marlon Brown looked amazing. All he's done is look very amazing in every game he's played thus far. Jones being hurt is great. That's what a young receiver on the Ravens needs to break through: the guy ahead of him needs to get hurt. Stoke can't get as many reps as he had. Mellette seems ready for me. We only wanted to activate 4 receivers, and activated more players at other positions instead. Otherwise Mellette would have been out there. I don't understand how anyone is uncomfortable with our receiving corps.

2012 Week 1 v. Cincinnati, Anquan Boldin: 4 catches, 63 yards, 1 Touchdown

2013 Week 1 @ Denver, Marlon Brown: 4 catches, 65 yards, 1 Touchdown

Marlon Brown might be "unproven"--but we don't necessarily need "proven"? Do we? Dallas Clark is "proven." That quite frankly doesn't mean anything. Victor Cruz wasn't proven, and a UDFA. He produced 1,500 yards and 9 touchdowns his rookie year. Marlon Brown clearly has the talent to be our #2 WR. So it's about time we start treating him like that.

imo, I'm much more comfortable with this:

1 T. Smith
2 M. Brown
3 B. Stokley
4 A. Mellette
5 D. Thompson

Than I am comfortable with this:

1. T. Smith
2. J. Jones
3. B. Stokley
4. M. Brown
5. A. Mellette

Tight end is what I'm worried about. Are Dickson and Clark just knocking the rust off and they'll discipline themselves and be clutch performers down the stretch? Or is this an issue that will continue on down the line throughout the entire season until Pitta comes back?

To be honest, I think Dallas Clark will be very ashamed and he'll discipline himself and the old Dallas Clark will be back. He'll catch everything thrown his way again. It might take a few more weeks, but it'll happen. However, Ed Dickson will continue to be streaky and inconsistent all the way up until Pitta's return. Making big plays here, failing to reel in balls there.

I feel the same way. Jacoby getting hurt is a blessing in disguise.

Wouldn't necessarily call it a blessing in disguise, but I see what you mean . Sad part if Jacoby was looking (for as short as it was) more well rounded as a reveiver than we've ever seen out of him. Oh well, bring on Brown!

If Brown and Mellette can both step up we can rely on 4WR sets until Pitta returns. We could use Smith, Brown, Jacoby, and Mellette and realty wreck a defense.

I've been trying not to talk about it because it really sucks, but he was actually looking like a number two WR while he was in. He was doing things I've never seen him do before.

I still feel like throwing up how that game unfolded, but oh well. Nothing is perfect, such is life. 4 Wide sounds great if we can make it work. We better stomp Cleveland (and AD just ran for 78 on his first carry).

No. More. Brandon. Lloyd. Talk.

That's why I posted the article. So it would stop. Did you even read my whole post or did you just see his name and immediately want to post your cute little drawing?

He's not saying that to you. He's saying it in reply to your comment. He's happy there will be no more talk of Lloyd. That's how I interpreted it anyway.

Perhaps. I can see what you mean with the drawing. He's happy it's over. But I don't see the point for the periods between each word. That means he's stressing the point instead of expressing joy that it's finally over.

Clark and Stokley were both put into the fire before they could even fully get a hold of the playbook so I dont blame them that much because when you put that much focus on trying to remember plays, your ability to play struggles abit until you can catch up. Stokley still would be a really good WR in the slot, I mean, this is the same WR that scored on Corey last year in the playoffs and was apart of that mega Broncos offense just a year ago, he still has a bit left in the tank IMO, and so does clark. So at the moment I can see the roster being like:

WR1-Smith
WR2-Brown
WR3-Stokley
WR4-Mallette

Jones sprained MCL in Ravens' loss; team shopping for WRs?

I was right, we did need WR's.  Guess I do know more than our GFO.

Yeah, draft some. Too late now !!

Marlon Brown looks just fine to me.  And I still maintain that Tandon Doss and LaQuann Williams could be NFL receivers.  The problem is Flacco isn't the QB that can make these guys shine.

Flacco seems to only be able to throw to one type of receiver with any consistency and that's the kind that can just out-jump everyone for a lofted ball... as evidenced by Boldin, Jacoby Jones, and Torrey Smith in the playoffs last year.
