Matt Elam

Yeah, from what I've heard from Jags fans on another forum he hasn't really lived up to expectations. He's made some good tackles downfield but struggled mightily in coverage.

I saw two people discussing how he's basically just another linebacker on bleacherreport.com. He had such a high draft grade, too, on NFL.com. He had like a 92, I think.

EDIT: 90.6

Hasn't Cyprien greatly struggled?

Yes he has . so in the end it worked out well for the ravens . I still wouldn't write any player Cyprien, Elam  etc off after two games .

I still can't believe we are discussing whether or not we made the right decision on our 2013 first round pick when it's still 2013.......

But dude look at how much better the other guys are after only "2" games. Guys are supposed to be pro bowlers from day one.

Sarcasm off

Yes----Huff proved to be severely outmatched in the Denver game---I would make him responsible for 4 of their touchdowns.  He looked like he was in slow motion compared to the receivers and some of  Denver's running backs.   Good Elam is starting now.

Elam isnt there yet. He wont be for a while. His strength is to endure it, learn from it, and get better as game passes by. Elam is going to be a stud.

Atleast he seems to be a better tackler than Huff is, which is what cost Huff his position, imho. Sure he needs to be a bit smarter on the field like most of our secondary, but that comes with experience.

The other rookie safeties, like Eric Reid for example, are not doing that much better, but they are learning and getting better as time goes on.

Our defense is clearly getting better and we are still just in week 2.

A little faith in our coaches wouldn't hurt.

right from 1998 onwards

guys i raved about

cmac
jamal lewis
suggs
ed reed
ngata
grubbs
yanda

guys i raved about and was wrong. they werent bad but fell below my expectations.
oher
chester

on the fence and was wrong they did good
heap
rice
flacco
webb
torrey smith

guys who i feel were overrated and was right. still saw them as solid if nothing else.
clayton
upshaw
elam (how i see him)
jimmy smith
travis taylor

guys who i knew would be busts
the entire 2004 draft. i remember getting drunk afterwards such
guys who i thought we stole and was right
adalius thomas
jarrett johnson

So if that's all true... 3 out of the 5 guys you "knew we're overrated and was right" are Elam a rookie, upshaw in his 2nd year and smith in his 3rd (who's turning the corner btw). So really that's only 2.

And how did you know Sergio kindle would fall down stairs? Yea it was a waste but no one can use that as support bc there's no way to tell without the fall what he would have been.

So basically you have us a list of players that Ozzie hit on which only discredits your argument.

He told me he had average technique. Kind of funny considering he was a top 10 talent who dropped because of off the field issues and a knee injury.

even before that i was one of the few who felt he was going to fail. his mental issues were only part f the reason. he had average technique. ( kindle)

elam was alright. an improved per. nothing jaw dropping. it was our front 7 whichdeserves the praise.

Lol he's a rookie...in his third game...and he's getting better by leaps and bounds every game doing exactly what he's asked to do. Kinda hard for someone who... what were the words you used?

When your safeties only give up 29 yds on 5 rec to Owen Daniels, you're doing a bit better than all right.

IIRC that was more Ihedigbo than Elam.

There were plenty of times that Elam was matched on him. Actually got a PD while covering him.

Elam was great today. He did exactly what a FS should do. Good game. Nothing flashy, but it'll show up on film.

Yeah, really a contain guy.  He needs to calm down on those late hits out of bounds.  I appreciate the enthusiasm but he looks like a guy who may draw a flag.

he's a traditional free safety.  keeps the play infront of him.

That's probably the kind of safety Pees prefers, given his scheme. I also prefer traditional safeties. As much as I respected Reed as a player (when he was a Raven), I hated his gambling tendencies. I prefer safeties that keep the play in front of them, stick to their assignment, and make tackles. That's what Elam's doing. I love Matt Elam as a player right now.

Well James I is more of a "In the box stick to your man type" which Elam is too.  But since elam has more versatility and can play higher he does.  There was that missed coverage on Cameron against the browns but apart from that you catch the ball and he brings you down you know?

Lol. Matt Elam has a great game for a rookie going against a TE like Daniels. Smith and Graham had the worst game of the guys in the secondary and Webb was a bit hold and cold out there himself. Smith wasn't too bad and neither was Graham. They just weren't as good as the others. Our secondary does need to improve.

We still allowed less than 200 yards passing though, right? With that front seven, as deep and skilled as they are, we can survive with an alright secondary. Holding a very skilled Texans team to 9 points is a really good day for a defense, and I think they're starting to gel.

Elam seemed like he played alright to me.

I watched a lot of Elam at the stadium today.  He brought a lot of energy, lined up against the TEs very often and did a great job.  The only miscue I really saw from the stands was the missed tackle.
