Update: WR Tandon Doss is back

407 posts in this topic

Now that I have some time to evaluate, this is probably the best move that could've been made at WR. There's not one receiver out there that I would think would offer more than Doss. He knows the system already, and he can return punts. I'm not sure about KR, but I'm sure we'll at least experiment with him there. He's not the fastest guy in the world, but he does have good vision and he can find holes. I know there's a strong hatred for the guy around here, but really, there is no better option.

I actually think this means more than people realize. I've read some posts that suggest that because we re-signed Doss it means Deonte will be out longer. I disagree. I think Deonte could be fine and I think we could see Deonte returning kicks and Doss returning punts.

I agree. I don't think Deonte's vision is good enough to return punts. He's a straight line speed guy.

I don't know what to say to that, I'm still grieving over the loss of Boldin.  What a stupid move!!!!!

Time to get over it, not sure why people keep point to Boldin, he is gone and won't be back and wouldn't have been back after this year either way

OLB Robert James has been waived.

I follow the team pretty closely and I have no idea who that is. I must've completely missed him during training camp and the preseason.

He was signed after Atlanta cut him I believe. I think he was a special teams ace.

Ravens acquired him after the Falcons released him at the end of preseason. He's only been on the team for like a week.

I hope this doesnt mean putting aside aaron mellette just bc doss is 'harbaugh's guy'

I wouldn't worry about that. He's been cut before, Harbs clearly isn't that attached to him.

Oh right that guy. I remember the special teams ace part, just not the name.

If Doss is harbaugh's guy why would he have been cut? Majes zero sense. The truth is Mellette isnt ready and Doss can help in the return game and provide depth at WR while Jacoby is out.

He was never really Harbaugh's guy -- he was the guy Joe Flacco handpicked as a target a few drafts back. But then they never got on the same page, and Bolden, Smith and Pitta got all the love.

I actually like the signing because frankly there aren't a ton of gems out there who can return,  Doss doesn't have to start from scratch with the coaches and offense, and I'd much rather Doss become a human punching bag and get taken out on a return than Webb or Pierce. My only concern is that he somehow does well in practice (which is apparently where he shines), and takes reps from Brown or Mellette, who I think both have shown more upside to date. But if we are truly taking him just to fill a special teams role, and possibly will cut him as soon as Deonte comes back, then fantastic -- I hope the week off humbled him into actually focusing on his craft, and I hope the threat of being back on the street makes him step things up.

Probably already mentioned but he's most likely back for the PR/KR duties.  Him cracking the rotation would be a plus, even though I truly believe once he gets his confidence at WR he will be a beast.

We definitely need some one who can catch and not be afraid of contact.  And i really don't think tandon doss is the answer

I've seen Tandon make contested catches. He can do it. He fights for extra yardage. You might think he's afraid of contact, but he's clearly not.

It is a shame, because Doss really does have the potential to make catches that no one else on the roster can make, he's got a huge frame, and COULD make people forget that we ever got rid of Q. The problem is, Doss can make all the One handed, behind the back, blindfolded catches in shorts and shoulder pads, but when the game rolls around, he's running the wrong routes, being non existent.

I see your point but Doss' comments after he ran the wrong route that led to an interception in the preseason is what confirmed it for me. He didn't come out and take the blame. Instead he tried to share blame with Flacco. That really rubbed me the wrong way.[/quote]I hated that too. Even Gruden said it was on him. The guy has a bad attitude.

I don't know how I feel about this yet.   I guess we are going to see on Sunday how much playing time he gets.

I hate to say it, but I'd take him as my 3rd receiver over Stokley if it comes to that.

I think they will both see some snaps as slot WR. Doss is bigger and faster than Stokley and can provide a different kind of look out of the slot.

I agree. It's almost as if "the moment" gets too big for him, the pressure to not screw up causes him to. I really don't know if that is fixable...only one dude knows and that's Doss himself.

Watch Tandon Doss go off for like 13 catches, 208 yards and a TD. I would love that.... not bc of how much hate hes gotten... but bc of how that will help this team.

I don't expect him to play well if at all, but it would be funny and a bonus.

It can.  The game will slow down after he sees success.  Some guys just need to play on the field to feel like they belong.

Does he run routes better? Catch better?  Speed isn't essential in the slot, and Stokley finds space and has great hands.  Doss will be returning kicks and may get some reps in the slot.  I wouldn't give up on Brandon just yet.

Nah, 12 catches for 207. He's a bum!

You do need to be able to move and Stokley looked like he needed a mobility scooter.

Doss really couldn't perform worse than Stokley did against Denver. If he somehow does, then he's back out the door when Jones is back. If he performs better than Stokley, well then we've just upgraded arguably our worst player offensively that saw extensive snaps.

Don't know how many times ive echoed this sentiment. some guys just need to play, plain and simple. I understand practice performance and consistency get you on the field but some guys just show up on game day. Especially when you've gone almost 3 years without meaningful and prolonged real game snaps.

I definitely hope that Tandon does well. Don't know if he can handle it, though. He makes a lot of mental mistakes and I personally don't think he has that great of a rapport with Joe.
