Update: WR Tandon Doss is back

407 posts in this topic

There might be no room for Tandon when Asa comes back. I really like Asa as a returner. He's explosive.

It's too bad Asa doesn't even have ADHD. Oops

If he was soooo great, then why didnt he make the team in the first place.

I do not have any links to that one just yet. Again, Gabe is my source of information pertaining to Doss. He has not yet explained this.

Doss' body language and some of his interviews gave me the impression he felt entitled because of his draft status among other things. Hopefully, getting cut was a wake up call for him. I was on the Doss bandwagon all the way up to the preseason this year. I am willing and able to jump back on if Doss finally gets his act together and lives up to his potential.

I think that's just Doss's demeanor. He's always been a quiet, confident guy. I've always liked him and I hope he proves his worth on the squad.

I'm excited for Doss. I hope he did something with this second chance. He has a shot anyway. He has all the reason to play well. He should be inspired and perhaps this will help him going forward.

Also, Doss has good hands. Look at his punt returns. If you guys recall, he was usually back there when we were pinned deep over Jacoby because of those hands. I'm not just talking about this year either.

I see your point but Doss' comments after he ran the wrong route that led to an interception in the preseason is what confirmed it for me. He didn't come out and take the blame. Instead he tried to share blame with Flacco. That really rubbed me the wrong way.

I didn't see that. What did he say?

I don't remember word for word. Basically he just said its up to him and Joe to be on the same page. The comments were innocent enough. It's not TMZ type stuff but at the same time he isn't a veteran like Boldin who gets the benefit of the doubt. He's a 3rd years receiver who's done nothing in this league yet. You can probably find the after game interview on this website or possibly CSNBaltimore.com.

I'm just glad Webb & Pierce won't be returning kickoffs anymore.

I hope Doss proves me wrong and can actually contribute on offense.

It's kind of what he didn't say that got people mad.  There was a miscommunication, Doss ran the wrong route or broke the wrong way on his route, and as a result the pass was intercepted.  Joe was mad, the coaches were mad, a few of them laid into Doss on the sideline - and Gruden in the booth also confirmed Doss had run the wrong route.  Basically Doss never came out and owned up to it, just said he and Joe weren't on the same page and needed to get there.

A lot of fans had low opinions on Doss to begin with (a bit unfair since people kept trying to compare him straight up to Q), so naturally when he started whining people really soured on him.

I actually don't mind having Doss back. My main issues were his consistency and him holding Brown back. With Jacoby injured, Doss could be an adequate #3 with Brown at #2.

I understand what you  mean but i see it kinda similar to what Jimmy Smith said when he got beat by falcons wideout  Jones( in preseason) for a touch down which most beleive was he's fault but he blame it on miscommuncation between him and the safety. Some times people can be so confident that they can be blind to their own faults( i definately have that problem) but what Doss said was wrong  and i doubt the ravens would had bought him back if they felt like he had some character issues.

Laugh all you want, Doss is a the best healthy option at returning punts AND kicks (he was one of Indiana's primary returners on both when he was there) on a team that strangely decided they didn't need a backup one with Thompson and Jackson out (*cough* Bobby Rainey). Is Doss an explosive returner? No, but he knows how to field them and he is solid enough until Thompson or Jones are healthy again. Who knows, he may still wind up being able to contribute some on offense. And don't worry all you Doss haters out there, Marlon is pretty solidified as one of our top 3 wideouts with Torrey and Stokely.

This also means Deonte isn't ready. When is this guy gonna contribute? This roster is a joke.

Between you, Sami84, Poes Crows and a few others, you're making me run out of negs. I didn't neg you this time though lol. I need to conserve them. But seriously, why even root for this team if you're going to constantly bash it?

another big mistake by our Front Office. We had Boddy Rainey, could have been our 3rd back or Special Teams guy but they cut Rainey & went with the rookie who btw took J. Jones out.

I believe this will ignite a fire UNDER Doss!  I bet he's going to be "paying EXTRA attention" to every detail.  Why?  He was cut, and found out that NO NFL teams are interested!  This is his last hurrah -- his last chance to really make an impact.  I believe he's going to be putting in the EXTRA effort that's needed!

Doss looked good in that final preseason game. It seemed like the light had finally gone on for him. It was just too late for him to surpass Brown. Hopefully getting cut made that line shine even brighter for him and he proves to be what we all thought he'd be when we drafted him.

This is the move I've been waiting to read about. I take it as an indication that Deonte Thompson's injury will be around for a little longer. Doss makes it so we don't put Webb and Pierce out there to return punts. He's tough, he's smart, he doesn't mess up too badly.

I think the cut will have him motivated as well. It's basically like he has another shot after he probably thought his career was over. It's good to have him on the roster, and he's not going to cut into Marlon or Aaron's playing time. I think mostly he's going to cut into Stokley's playing time, which is good because Stokley really shouldn't have been running as many routes as he did on Thursday. He looked so gassed! Basically, I see it like:

2-WR set:

X: Torrey (Mellette, Deonte*)
Z: Marlon (Mellette, Stokley, Doss, Deonte*)

3-WR set:

X: Torrey (Mellette, Deonte*)
Z: Marlon (Mellette, Deonte*)

Y: Stokley (Doss, Deonte*)

4-WR set (we almost never do this and prefer having Clark + Rice instead of 4 WRs + Rice or 4 WRs + Clark)

X: Torrey (Mellette, Deonte*)
Z: Mellette (Marlon, Doss, Deonte*)
Y: Marlon (Doss, Deonte*)
Y: Stokley (Doss, Deonte*)

5-WR set (we almost never do this, and prefer having Pierce or Rice out there instead)

X: Torrey
Z: Mellette
Y: Marlon
Y: Stokley
Y: Doss

So, he's basically been signed to be 1) the punt returner, 2) Stokley's backup, 3) a 5th WR in an offense that would rather do an 11 (1 TE + 1 RB) or just 4 WR's and 1 TE/RB 95% of the time.

[Glossary:
x: split end, on the line of scrimmage, fastest guy who can get down the line. Can't go in motion.
z: flanker, off the line of scrimmage, has the cushion, can go in motion and get in the slot
y: slot wide out, off/on the line of scrimmage depending if they're on the flanker or split end side, motions]

I mean, don't get me wrong. Torrey can be a flanker too, but I'd say only Aaron Mellette and an injured Deonte have the speed to be a  split-end in the NFL.

OLB Robert James has been waived.

I assume his salary is fully guarenteed because he was on the roster week 1? Vet minimum I assume?

I've never been a Doss fan, but I saw this move coming as the next logical step after JJ went down.

Like others have said,  hopefully the release was 'eye-opening' to say the least.

Now that I have some time to evaluate, this is probably the best move that could've been made at WR.  There's not one receiver out there that I would think would offer more than Doss.  He knows the system already, and he can return punts.  I'm not sure about KR, but I'm sure we'll at least experiment with him there.  He's not the fastest guy in the world, but he does have good vision and he can find holes.  I know there's a strong hatred for the guy around here, but really, there is no better option.

Also, now that Jones got cut maybe Arthur Brown will move to use the #54 jersey?!?

I didn't care for #59. He was #4 in college. #54 is the pros version of that.
