Thoughts on the defense vs. the Broncos

85 posts in this topic

I don't blame coordinators a lot, but Pees needs to mix up his coverages more. Did we play press man once? You can't play off against guys like Decker and Welker. Playing off man against possession receivers like them is just letting the defense convert third down.

Especially when press man is Welker's, and to a lesser extent, Decker's kryptonite. We allowed them to do that to us. We could've held them in check by playing more press coverage, but we let them off easy. This is not Ravens football. If Pees doesn't prove himself by the end of the season, then I say we move on from him before he wastes our D's potential for another season. But I'm definitely willing to give him the benefit of a doubt, considering that Julius Thomas is downright unstoppable when on his game. I mean this guy has all the makings of Gates 2.0.

I agree with you here.  I usually blame player execution, but some of the blame must go on Pees.  Not a huge amount, but some.  We gave up 7 passing touchdowns and we knew all they would do is pass..

Maybe I missed it, but why didn't we jam them at the line every time.  The WR's are way too good in space and Manning is deathly accurate.  We were chasing them the whole time.

In a crazy world, one would think that Pees meant to allow the Bronc's to do what they did in order to humble his players lol. But back to the real world... that was just pathetic D all the way around.

Another thing I'll say here, going back to Julius Thomas. Just as soon as I said the guy is the next Gates, I looked him up, and sure enough, not only does he have similar size to Gates, he also came from a basketball background too. Now, sure there are a lot of players out there who had size/physical traits/basketball backgrounds who failed, but this guy looks like he has it all.

Off man simply doesn't work against guys like Welker and Decker. Stupid to play off against them.

Its like we were asking for Welker to do his quick cuts in space.  Why not hit them in the mouth??  Worse thing possible is that we are stuck running from behind after them (which happened anyway)

I'm all for letting Spags have a shot at defensive play calling.  I have no idea why he is still here.  The defense is not weak under him they just aren't aggressive. He does a decent job just wondering if Spags can do better.

I'm not sure how I feel about Spagnolo. He might be an albatross. That was one of our worst games and he did coordinate that awful Saints defense.

Someone made a good point in another thread. In 3 of our last 4 games with Pees we've allowed more than 30 points. That's bad.

Yeah I'd say, I have never been a Pees fan.

14 of those points came from returns, and we were crushing SF until the lights went out and they had 45 minutes to game plan.

Last night did worry me, but I think it was mostly a function of a secondary still working on communicating and getting tired in the altitude. The defense looked very good in the first half when they had time to rest.

Spags is a 4-3 guy......

I'd like him to do it too, but changing it wouldn't be good.

This. Combined with the fact that we faced the best offense in all the league in our first game who was looking for revenge against us, you have a lethal weapon you're up against. With Ray Lewis, "no weapons will prosper"... but without him, "weapons will prosper"... or something like that lol

All terrible, but i agree. Dickson and Stokley though has to go. Bring in Mellette and Matt. No chance matt Can be as bad as dickson is.

in fairness to Dickson,he pretty much didn't play the pre-season. He was rusty and it showed. I wouldn't write him off just yet.

1. Drops. Drops. Drops.

2. No separation AT ALL. Our WRs outside of Torrey and Marlon looked slow and gassed. Even Torrey looks unwilling to go after the ball, but Stokley was pretty awful as well. Credit goes to the 3 CBs. I wish Champ was out there and that they left Torrey 1 on 1 with him.

3. Jacoby is a solid slot WR. We missed him quite a lot after he got injured. Come back soon!

4. The replacement RT got beat by Shaun Phillips EVERY PLAY. Jah Reid would've been better than that clown

5. Blocked punt??? Seriously? The Denver dude squeezed through two gigantic blockers..

6. Joe played very well.. well, as well as he could with slow, butterfingered WRs.

7. We miss Pitta. A whole crap ton.

8. Defensive line played very well. Run defense was stout, but couldn't get to manning very much even when we blitzed >5.

9. I liked our play calling on offense, but defense.. there were gaps EVERYWHERE. Communication was a major issue, as Huff was beat constantly and was out of position.

Sorry for the venting. We'll b

Yup i agree. I have a feeling we have few injuries tonight other than jacoby & oher. Somebody in d was playing hurt. They were on field pretty much the whole 2nd half.

Sorry for the venting. We'll be fine.
to be honest they would not of shreded our defense if we were a 4-3 like Dallas and Cinncinnati almost forgot to mention that kid ozzie fell in love with Reid Fragel we could get himm now off the Bengals practice squad so we have to cut someone off our active roster so it could be Anthony Levine
changing to a 4-3 would do us wonders look at alll the players we have right now we would cut some linebackers trade some players for more key aquisitions sign more depth and versatile players more of our lineman would shine better on defense with more reps

It really wouldn't make a difference. We spend half the time in nickel anyways where we have a 4 man front and we actually do use a lot of 4-3 concepts in our defense anyways.

What do you get when you have a hall of fame QB, 3 Pro Bowl WRs, a fast reliable TE, 3 great RBs, and a stout O-line?

49 points

Super Bowl hangover at its finest. We have young team that needs time to gel and develop chemistry.. everyone take a deep breath, relax and remember we won a SB last season, and like Ozzie said we are trying to make and develop a younger team for the future, so its going to come with adversity.

0-1...on to the next one.

We all expected growing pains with the defense. I expected a struggle (not of that magnitude), but figured communication wouldn't be settled til around the bye. Honestly, we should have tempered expectations giing I'm to the gam knowing how Manning is. Say what you want, but not challenging was a huge turning point for that gam as well. Even wiyh the previous drops and sloppy play, had thr team been able to get the ball back and put up points, I feel that game takes a different direction. Also, before people begin clamoring for a trade, NO! Let the yiung guys earn their stripes. If the fans can't tolerate one off season(I still have us making playoffs), LET EM GO. I still want to see what we have in Deonte when he's back and Brown looks promising. The Jacoby injuring could turn out to be a blessing. The defense will be fine by the end of the season where we get anotyer big test in Brady. If they look as bad in week 16 as they did last night then we really have a problem.

Off topic but does anyone have a number on the dropped passes from last night?

Jones injury could be a blessing?.....That's an interesting view. Force the Rookies in to play WR I guess?....Whatever

We have a bigger test than Brady in week 16.  We have Brandon Weedon in Baltimore for week 2.  He may not be Manning, but he's got a running game and an up and coming defense. If we don't get by that game, you can start hoping for next year.

By blessing I meant maybe with real games being played now find a diamond in the rough throughout the season. Trust me, not thinking that far ahead cause the Brown's worried me even before the blowout. They are a team on the rise and that game could go anyway. Will be interesting to see how our run d holds up.
