You know, I find it humorous to imagine that whatever is in Gandalf's pipe is actually a hallucinogen and, being a special occasion, he spiked it with something for Bilbo's birthday party.

 

First evidence is the 'chill' he gets from touching the ring on the floor (seeing Sauron's eye / chills) Frodo finds him sitting in Bag End alone, smoking in front of the fire. He doesn't immeadiately respond to Frodo and acts strangely, ultimately running off to the opposite end of the continent (paranoia). The only real scene you see of him there is him smoking some more in the archives of Minas Tirith.

 

At this point, confirming what the ring actually is, he jets back to the Shire and breaks into Frodo's house - obviously not thinking clearly. He stumbles out of the darkness, surprising Frodo with both his haggard look (sweating) and his unexpected visit. He takes the ring from Frodo and throws it into the fire, reclaims it, then tells Frodo he has to bounce too (paranoia) and he'll meet him at a bar.

 

So, my contention is that Gandalf was on a bad trip for an extremely long amount of time - in the books it is 17 years between the times Frodo receives the ring and when Gandalf returns.  If you watch the scene(s) with the thought that Gandalf is tripping, you get a different meaning out of them.

Couple in love / skull illusion. This was pre touch-up. There's also a pocket watch chain on the watch with a raven skull fob that's glowing purple. Nice and subtle.
