How has Brandon Williams looked?

48 posts in this topic

Please forgive me if this has already been posted somewhere else, but I looked back a few pages and did not find a thread on this. I cannot get every single preseason game of the Ravens on my TV from where I'm located, so I'm asking you. How has Brandon Williams looked this preseason? He looked pretty impressive judging from the lone game that was on TV (Panthers game) when I was watching him. He got solid pressure on Newton, even making a sack, and he, along with the rest of the line, stonewalled the Panthers when they would try to run. But that's just one game. How has he looked otherwise?

He's really good at penetrating through the line. He reads the blocks well. He split a few double teams. He looked good. He played a bit slow out there though. He was slow getting off the ball sometimes, and he had almost no lateral quickness.

I'd love to see him play with better players around him. He busted up a few plays, but because of our lackluster backup DEs, DTs, and OLBs, the RB still found some yardage.

Almost like a protypical NT in the mold of Casey Hampton??

Not that slow, but yeah, just about. He showed flashes of being a quick NT, and flashes of being a mountain.

So basically, he is performing exactly the way we thought he would.

Exactly. Busting plays up the middle, but not being quick enough to chase RBs down the line.

He's a hustler though. He's an effort guy.

I like it. Exactly what we needed last year. With the rest of the DL being as good as it is, I feel that is a perfect complement. Chase the guys to the outside, and have the others make the tackle. Canty/Spears/Jones/Ngata/Suggs/Upshaw will love that.

Yes they will. Just too bad Pericak and Meshak Williams couldn't do it...

He's improved in each game which is all that you can ask for out of a rookie drafted out of a DII school.

The ONLY negative that I have with his game RIGHT NOW is that he is slow off the snap. He could get away with that @ Missouri Southern b/c he was bigger and stronger than everyone else, but now he's going up against guys his size and his strength. So when he's slow off the snap he's getting NO penetration what so ever. But like I said, he's still young and that's something that he can and probably will improve upon.

I agree with this assessment. I think he's still learning his get off and probably has been able to skimp on the core strength required for this level because of the mass he has on his extremities. However, what I love more than anything about this kid is his humility. You can just feel how happy he is to be here and when you can combine that with God-given ability and the size he has you're looking at dangerous player down the line. I mean, the dude sacks Cam Newton and doesn't even consider a dance. Another Harbaugh guy through and through.

His arms aren't big enough... I recommend more handstands. I'd look to see a sharp improvement in his on the field play once this is accomplished.

I can't view the image or video that you put up (becuase I'm at work), but I'd assume that because you bolded "his arms aren't big enough", you posted a picture of those chicken wings connected to his shoulder.

Tiny arms, but his upper legs look good.

Do you think any given THREE people here can beat him in arm wrestling?
Meaning all three at once. Three people arm wresting one.

Do you think we stand a chance?

Brandon has done pretty well this preseason. Nothing monstrous, but I've noticed him. He'll probably make the roster-- don't think we've ever cut a 3rd round pick before they even play a regular season snap. Our D-line is scary this year, and he's a good cog in it.

And he's got the perfect teachers in Spears, Ngata, and Canty to teach him how to use his size and athleticism going forward.

He WILL make the roster. No way we'd give up on a 3rd rounder with his potential.

Yeah he's a lock to make the roster.  No 3rd round pick has ever been cut in their first year.

I don't know man, I hope he makes the roster. We might have to make room for Tandy Doss though.

He's not much of a pass-rusher, although he did get that sack on Newton. For the most part he hasn't gotten many pressures while he has been out there for quite a few pass-rush snaps. In fact that sack was his only pressure thus far in the preseason.

He is very stout against the run though. I have been very impressed with how well he anchors in the run game. He also shows the ability to shed blocks and make a quick lateral movement to bring down the ball carrier.
