G/T Rick Wagner

I have been quite impressed with Wagner's play through the pre-season. Having  reviewed his performances weeks one through three, I saw only one play where it appeared to me he could have stayed with his block a little longer. Apart from that, he has been flat out dominant.

So much so that for the most part it appears the end  he is blocking, one on one has hit a wall and is stuck to it.

Taking into account the level of competition he has faced playing in the third and fourth quarters, does any one feel he could play right guard or has any one heard of him perhaps seeing time at right guard backing up Yanda?

Badgers have a history of producing hard working, blue chip lineman. I think he is no exception. Maybe he is the LT of the future.

Also, does he like to be called Rick or Ricky? I keep seeing it both ways.

I agree with you that he looks solid. I think he has erned his spot on the 53. With another year of development, he might push for that LT spot next year.

I don't see LT in him... I do see maybe guard or taking over at RT if Oher leaves this offseason. Castillo has done an amazing job with him, as has Moeller, in just this short time. I'm excited to see the progression of this guy. There's a lot to like about him.

I officially laid claim to be president of the Ricky Wagner fan club in the game thread the other night.  No one's stealing my thunder here. ;)

Let's hope you're wrong. He's the top backup at both tackle spots and the team is supposedly high on him. He was a 4 years starter at LT for Wisconsin if I'm not mistaken.

Whatever happened to that guy who gave up 0 career sacks in college?

Gaines?  He's the 3rd string LT according to the depth chart, but I don't think he's gotten that much playing time.  He might be lucky enough to head to the PS.

Gabe Carimi anyone? Badgers had several major bust past few years. I say from where we drafted him is the right where his values are. If we get lucky he might pan out.

Joe Thomas anyone?

Kevin Zeitler anyone?

Travis Frederick anyone?

Kraig Urbik anyone?

Peter Konz anyone

John Moffit anyone?

Lest we forget that Rick Wagner has never been considered to be as great as any of the above...nor was he ever expected to be as great

Huh, would you look at that.  I don't think I ever realized Joe Thomas went to Wisconsin.  I should have known that, I really don't know why I didn't lol.

Lol. I never said that they didn't have busts. I said they have a history of good lineman. Every college has busts.

Take it for what it is but according to this video Eric DeCosta was really high on Wagner. He had him in the same class as the top 3 LTs in the draft. That's probably a reach but Wager should be a solid backup at least.

Dude I don't even know you anymore.

I hope you didn't think that Justin James Watt went to Iowa or Minnesota or something crazy...

Off topic, and not a shot at any of this list all, just sheer curiosity... how did Konz do last year? I never really followed him, but I do know that back in college he was a pretty dominant C and was even considered to be first round material for a while.

Rotoworld says he's expected to start. That's the only reason I kept him on the list.

I think he got nicked up a bit last year

Everything I've read about Wagner says that he has stiff hips and doesn't move as fluid as you'd hope an LT to move. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him as our future LT as it would solve a major problem for us that will arise in the future, but that's why I don't think he'd be an ideal LT.

Thanks for the info. I respect Wisconsin and root for them every single time I see them on TV, although I wouldn't consider myself a diehard by any means. I loved Watt in college, and started following him during his time there.

Lol I spent quite a while in the hospital during the times of that draft, so I have an excuse.  I know Watt went there, so it's not that bad!

If I recall correctly he played a lot of guard last year.

He looked good to me in the hips and everything so far from what I've seen. Just because a guy's profile says something doesn't mean it's true at the next level. Guys should improve and get better. It's possible he is improving. I'm not saying you're saying otherwise, and I'm also not saying I'm sold on the guy as a LT. Just throwing out my opinion here.

I will say that technique is a big deal and it's a big, big reason why Michael Roos (LT from TEN) has been so successful. In fact, it's the main reason.

True, and some of it also probably has to do with Castillo taking him under his wing and showing him the details of how to dominate as an OL. They also scheme to his strengths, while avoiding his weaknesses as much as possible.

One thing's for sure... our draft class this year has potential to be absolutely amazing. In fact, if everything falls into place, it could be our best class ever. Only fitting seeing as we lost two of our legends the same year. Hopefully, even more legends are born out of this class.

I agree.  I was absolutely thrilled with this draft.  The only one I still am kind of confused about is Ryan Jensen, but that's only a 6th rounder.

Jensen provides some decent depth. Depth along the O-Line (really any line, be it O or D-line) is a major plus any way you slice it. Besides, not every single pick in your draft is going to be a starter, let alone a major player in the NFL.

We could wind up in five years with 6 or 7 solid starters on our team that all came from this draft class.  That's pretty awesome.  Who knows, even some of the undrafted rookies from this season could still be on the team playing major roles.

Oh yeah I know.  Not expecting a superstar or anything there.  It's just that I'd never heard of the guy before, and I actually did a lot of research on the draft this year lol.
