Dumervil and Suggs on the same side?

Did anyone see that play in the game against Carolina where they both lined up on the same side? It might've been towards the end of the first quarter, I don't remember. What was that all about?

Yeah it ended up forcing Carolina to call a timeout because there was almost a delay of game.

It's like they didn't know what was going on lol. I love that. This kind of versatility will throw off many offenses, and cause them to make dumb plays and presnap adjustments for this very fact.

An overload blitz probably...didnt see the play in question

That's what it was. We were overloading a weak spot on the OL, and they didn't know how to account for it, or they didn't have time to account for it properly before the play clock went down to almost zero.

And then they blitzed Corey Graham off the other side from the nickel. I saw him come rocketing in, only to pull up when they whistled the play dead. The offensive line would've been so focused on Suggs and Doom that Graham would've had a great shot at getting to the QB. Absolute genius.

Kudos to Dean Pees for that one. And to think, we're probably only playing about 50-75% of our true plays, in order not to show our hand in the preseason. Pees is a good coordinator, and I think he proves just that this year. He did excellent with the Patriots D. Now they don't have him, and look at how horrendous the Patriots defense has become.

Seeing a bit more creativity like that in a playbook has given me a bit more confidence in Pees after a shaky first season.

I just thought of something even better.

Put Doom, Ngata, and Suggs on the right side :P

And sneak John Simon in on the left with Canty. Who to block?

I love that idea. It might be too early in his career though, but if he keeps making plays, coaches might not be able to ignore him. Do you think they would consider sneaking him in on certain plays?

Yes, I loved that look when I saw it. Pees is going to have so much fun designing plays with all the pieces he has now. We will definitely be a top 5 defense this year.

The reason Pees was so vanilla with his playcalls last year is because of how bad our D truly was. They had very little versatility, and most of their stars were either playing hurt, were old, or they were completely sidelined with injuries.

It doubt it. Simon isn't food enough to justify pulling someone else off of the field.

Well a package or two wouldn't hurt every once in a while. Ravens like doing that. Anyone remember the Omar Brown sack last year?

Not that I'm rooting for it, but it's inevitable that at some point at least one of the other OLBs will be a bit banged up.  Even if it's just for a half or something, Simon is only one bruised thigh away from playing time.  I doubt he'll be completely out of the rotation to begin with, actually.

Then when you mix in a well trained Upshaw for relief it is going to be freakish amazing like the days when Arthur Modell owned this defense...

Romeo Crennell also deserves a lot of credit for that old Patriots D..they weren't as good as us or Pittsburgh but they were stout. Crennell's defense in Cleveland was pretty stout too for the talent they had to work with.

That said, I think Pees did a great job last year getting the most out of what he had.

Boy, I sure am glad that he's not food... that would be one tough steak... LOL ;)

But from what I've seen/read about the D this year, they will be scheming to player's strengths and being versatile with their plays. They will use their depth, and they will use certain players for certain tasks/situations. For example, Dumervil isn't the best run stuffer in the league (and some people would say that I'm being nice by saying even that), so Upshaw will come in on obvious running plays to stuff the run on the edge. Not to mention the fact that someone is bound to be injured, like it or not, so he will be called upon if the opportunity arises. Never count anyone out.

Very true. Crennell is a very underrated defensive coach. The trouble is, people thought that would translate into him being a good Head Coach as well. This has happened to several other coaches as well. Wade Phillips comes to mind, as does Rex Ryan. Both are excellent D coaches, but they cannot coach an entire team to save their lives.

Wow pees wAsnt shaky at all. He was dealing with an extremely weak defense. Injuries at every position. Major ones. The lynch pin to the entire unit, Suggs, was never 100%. I'd call his coaching job with that group masterfull in keeping them respectable. By default his work this year won't be as impressive, despite a marked improvement in performance.

I think it's fair to say that the defense in general was a little shakey.  Not the best unit we've fielded.

Heck when i saw that, i got excited.

It looked like an oversized blitz. Havnt really seen the RAVENS do that since the REX RYAN days.

I liked it a lot. Think we need to do it more often going against younger QBs, cant do it against Manning or Brady, they would pick us apart.

Wish we had the NFL East this year instead of last. I'd love to freak RG3 out.

I honestly think RG3 is overrated, not saying he isnt good but the Media gives him way too much.

I dont think they are going to have as good as a yr as they did last season.
